In the season finale the potentials went with Faith, Spike, and Buiffy, Willow and Kennedy went to cast the spell to make all the potentials Slayers, and Robin and Giles were teamed to fight in one place, leaving Anya and Andrew teamed to fight in another. Anya and Andrew, arguably two of the worst fighters available not only teamed up but left on their own. It just makes no sense, why not team one with Robin and the other with Giles or something. They were basically left for dead and unfortunately lead to Anyas highly impersonal death.

By this time in the series, Anya had been recognized as an experienced fighter, apparently due to her being a former vengeance demon. (This has always struck me as strange, seeing as how she was never much of a fighter before Season 7) Andrew, obviously, needed help, so he was teamed up with someone capable of giving that help, as well as being the closest thing to a real friend that he had in Sunnydale.

And as for Giles and Robin Wood, once more, we have a man (Wood) who needs to be partnered with someone with whom he is on a more or less friendly basis, and, with the exception of Faith, that only leaves Giles, his partner in the "let's stake Spike for the greater good," plot. Remember, given his performance in demon fighting as far as we actually saw it, Robin needed an experienced fighter at his side almost as much as Andrew did. Out of the few times that we actually saw Robin fight, he managed to hold his own only once, in the alley when he took Buffy out. Every other time that he saw any action, someone had to bail him out before he became vamp food. I wouldn't call that a great track record.

idk, I never thought of Anya as much of a fighter. A lot of jumping on vampires backs and such lol. As a demon like when her and Buffy were fighting to the death was a whole different thing. I can see what you mean though, I just gave Robin more credit and Anya less. 😀

I never thought of them as being "left for dead"... They were going to war. War means that sometimes people will die in the crossfire, and there was no way for them to know who would live and die in the big final battle. They were all willing to fight, which meant they were willing to lay down their lives trying to win that fight.

I always found that absolutely ridiculous. Neither of them were great fighters...I mean Andrew was literally just cowering in a corner haha. Anya held her own, but she needed someone to back her up.

HisMrs I didnt mean the fact that they were willing to die but the fact that they were teamed up. Anya may not have been helpless but a stronger fighter should have been with Andrew

Because plot hole. There are quite a few of those in the series finale, but I think that the thematic and character resonance were more important anyway. They still bother me, though.

It just makes no sense

It makes absolutely perfect sense.

Imagine this, there's this guy who's had a crush on you, now you're friends and you'll never sleep with him but hell, you do love him, you trust him more than pretty much anybody else in the world and more importantly, you need him. You need his help, his normal guy insight, his pep talks and sometimes his hugs. Then this demon bitch comes in and tries to take him away from you and Xander's just lost an eye because of your stupid, irrational, crazy decisions so this time you're actually afraid that the whorish bitch from hell might succeed. They'll leave, start a family maybe and you'll be left alone with your shit.

So what do you do? A battle is coming, you know that people will die no matter what. What do you do with the demon bitch who might take your Xander away? Do you place her in safest place and with the best fighter or in the most dangerous place with the most lousy, useless joke of a fighter? Someone will die, it might as well be the demon bitch whore.

What would you do?

Left for dead I wouldn't say but least likely to survive. Even though they didn't get the most dangerous place to cover. Teaming them up wasn't nice at all if you see to their chances but for the mission it could very well been the best to do. Which is why I'd be such a lousy leader in a war. Too emotional.

Then this demon bitch comes...

that the whorish bitch from hell...

the demon bitch...

Someone will die, it might as well be the demon bitch whore.

So... Not a fan of Anya I take it.

Why would you say that? I love Anya, mostly for her honesty and fun fun fun factor. But Buffy? She barely tolerates her, ran her with a sword the first chance she got.

When we sit down to analyze Buffy's strategy, or lack of it, in that last battle, the first and most important factor is her fighting force and just what she can accomplish with it. She has two truly experienced demon fighters whose skill, bravery, and levelheadedness in battle are beyond doubt: Spike and Spike. She doesn't just want them with her, she HAS TO HAVE them there, because that is where the actual battle will be fought. Sure, she hopes that her plan to activate all of the Potentials will work, but even if it is successful, just about all that she has is a bunch of super powered amateurs with practically no combat experience whatsoever, and who are almost certainly going to need time adjusting to their new strength and agility, and, guess what, they aren't going to have that time. This is the literal trial by fire.

The people left outside to cover the escape routes were simply what she could spare from the main battle, and also the ones who most likely would have been the the first ones killed if they had gone down into the hellmouth. Keeping them outside was actually allowing them the best chance to survive. How she chose to pair up with whom makes pretty good sense if you look at it properly. Giles and Robin had become friends over the previous few weeks, and would almost certainly work well together. Buffy wanted someone who she had faith in and who she could trust to take care od Dawn, and her obvious choice was Xander. By simple process of elimination, that left her with Anya and Andrew as her final team. As for how Anya suddenly became such a skilled fighter, she probably just retained her demonic fighting skills the same way that Xander retained his military expertise after being turned into G I Joe back in Season 2.

The real question is, why did Anya retain her fighting skills in Season 7, when she apparently didn't earlier?

I never really thought much into that. But it always has kind of bothered me how quickly Anya was dismissed. I didn't feel there was a genuine reaction to her death. It was all very...oh Anya died? How very brave she was! Onward we go! 🙁

I love "Chosen", but yeah...the battle strategy was absolutely terrible. I mean, here's one major thought.

It was the middle of the freaking day.

Why didn't they just shear the top of the roof off of Sunnydale High and have no one guard the school? That way, when the uber-vamps stream up from hell, they just get dusted instantly. I mean, that was kind of the ultimate fail safe anyways when Spike activated the Wolfram & Hart thing that Angel gave him and Buffy.

I don't really think that they were "left for dead" though. Buffy couldn't stand Anya and Anya hated her, but I don't think she'd deliberately try to have her killed. Plus, she (sort of) like Andrew. And yeah, bit of a plot hole that Andrew made it out of that one alive (although his "I have swimmer's ear!" line was pretty hilarious.

Actually, that's almost always the initial reaction after battle. The joy of survival tends to blot out any immediate sense of loss. You can acknowledge the death of a friend, but the mourning comes later. We never got to see that mourning, and I think that the reason that we didn't is that Joss wanted to end the series with a sense of triumph rather than sadness. It's fine to have a season end with Buffy putting a sword through Angel's chest or Spike be totally consumed by flames if you know, or at least believe, that, somehow, they will be back after the summer break. A season can end that way, but a series never should.

Um, that would have been kinda impossible for them to do in such a short amount of time. Taking the roof off a whole building like that would take a huge amount of construction work, and they didn't have the time or manpower to accomplish this.
Not to mention that the ubervamps were coming in through the basement, so they could have just stayed down below til nightfall, then came out.

I don't really know how, but if Willow has the power to activate every potential slayer on the planet at once, I think she and everyone else could have taken the roof off the building if they'd wanted.

And really, if they had managed to take the roof off or not, where were the uber-vamps going to go either way? I mean, let's say the uber-vamps get through all the Scoobies and potentials and fully into the school? They would still have just waited until nightfall either way.

Not an expert, but can't you just demolish the school with a big wrecking ball? (Also agree with Always Bangel that Willow could have done it too, though I suppose going bad would be an issue.)
