thinking of moving to Canada?

I'll just have to stay here. I could never feel safe having to comply with Canada's restrictive gun laws. Besides which, I'm a Southern boy, and it gets COOOOOOOOOLD up there!

I respect your view point but most of us Canaidans find the lack of guns is what makes us feel safe.

I noticed you did... I just figured you were ignoring me like most women type folk

Primarily, the majority of my gun collection, inherited from my father, are handguns. That's at least part of my objection.
I just watched Dear Zachary on Netflix and although this feeling is totally irrational I don't want to be anywhere near Canada.

But on a serious note, I don't see the point in leaving or threatening to leave the country over this election. If you're unhappy with it, do something. Get out and vote for all elections, contact your representatives, stay informed, donate to groups who are being hurt by this, and get ready to put up a fight in the next election.

That takes work. It's easier to not vote (as a bulk of millennials and females did) and then complain about the results. Actually being proactive is hard.

We Canadians arent actually expecting anyone to show up, we're just too polite to say anything. Those crazy Americans are akways threatening to show up in Canada without an invitation. The best one was when same sex marriage was approved and Americans were posting like crazy that they were coming here to get away from it even though we had same sex marriage for about 10 years before them.

@Mr. Pole I can't seriously believe anyone would be able to ignore you, even if they tried. 😛

@white avenger We actually do have a lot of gun ownership here - just not much in the way of handguns. A colleague of mine at one company where I worked had run an engineering company in Parry Sound, Ontario, a small town on the east shore of Georgian Bay, the eastern arm of Lake Huron. One day, none of his employees showed up. The next day, they gradually started trickling back in. He asked what was going on and they looked at him like he was crazy. It was the first day of deer hunting season and everybody goes missing from every company in the area that day.

A little farther south on Highway 169/400, there is a community called Moon River where some people we know lived. Beside their house was a tiny Ski-Doo snowmobile, a size I had never seen before. The children in the area go to a school across the river and when the ice is thick enough, their parents start their machines at home and send them to school and at the end of the school day, the teacher starts their machines and sends them back home over the frozen river on these machines. These kids start driving snowmobiles in Grade 1.

About 80 km / 50 miles west of us is Mennonite territory where there are giant parking spaces for horse and buggy among the regular ones in towns like Elmira. Generally, rural areas vote Conservative and urban areas vote Liberal and NDP (New Democratic Party, a socialist party owned and operated by unions).

Living in the Toronto area, you can live your life never knowing these areas exist. BTW I inherited an American Gun Company double-barreled 12-gauge which I gave to an uncle who was a hunter. The gun was apparently sold originally in 1905, so it was quite well finished as was customary back then. If Curt Cobain was a Canadian, he might still be around. The lack of guns is what makes it safe here and the statistics don't lie:

The coldest it ever gets in Toronto is -26°C/-15°F, cold but not as cold as Chicago or Minneapolis and one of my customers was Lockheed in Eagan just southeast of Minneapolis and I used to fly through Chicago a lot, so I know. Toronto is not in a snow belt - the south side of the Great Lakes gets lake-effect snow, so when the snow was several feet high in Buffalo last year, we never had more than five inches.

Brrrr. I'm not leaving my little corner of Canada. Our record cold is -9C (15F) . It doesn't go below freezing very often.
About a year ago the programme on English TV, The Last Leg, had a phone in for people to say they would fund the purchase of a brick that would be used to build a wall between Canada and America.
Any volunteers to help build it?

Really? That sounds quite nice, is that in the south? 🙂 Although I don't mind the -30C we can get around Stockholm, it's usually a dry cold, so it doesn't feel as bad as -10 and windy weather. Kills my iPhone though...
As a non-American, can I still come to Canada? I promise I'll bring my own snow shovel 😀

Please come! We're very nice, you'll like it here.

Most Canadian's live in the south, usually 200 km from the US border. There are a couple little pockets of nice weather. Where I am is among the best, it's the bottom left hand corner when you look at a map. I hear there is an area in Ontario by the great lakes that is pretty warm and Halifax isn't bad either. Maybe @Ethan Reigns can talk more about hot spots over his way.

and you won't need a snow shovel here, not unless you take a trip into the mountains anyway. Skiing at Whistler maybe?

@Taake maybe you can plan a trip based on where you're fellow BB'ers live. We can take turns showing you around our towns. That would be fun.

One day I'll come, I've wanted to visit Canada for years :)
Is it easier to get into a country you have ancestral links to? Such as, say, a Canadian grandparent? Just asking.... for a friend.... 😛

suuure, for a friend *wink wink nudge nudge*

I'm not expert so I'll just link you here: Immigrate to Canada

I've heard it's easier if your "friend" speaks French but that might just be an urban myth.

I know of many area of Canada where a snow shovel would be no good, it'd break under the weight of the snow.
But would Canada want American refugees as according to Trump quiet a few are not nice people.

I do agree that Trump says a lot of things, but when you say you don't think he believes what he says. It isn't that, it's just that he can't remember all the crap he has spouted. In fact did he ever say anything negative about the Canadians?
Maybe he's going to live in Canada after his term of office, you'll know this if he changes the name from Camp David to Camp K'nuck.

Trump has said a lot of stuff about Canada. He says our current Prime Minister is "the worst President ever". Yeah, he'll do great representing you on the world stage. Here's a few more: Stupid things Trump has said about Canada
