In this episode when Xander and Angel are in the Masters lair Buffy lies there dead via drowning. Angel is clearly breathing very heavily but proceeds to tell Xander that Xander has to do CPR because Angel "has no breath". Well if he has no breath why was he breathing so heavily then and also how can he speak with no breath? It is a minor detail that has bugged me since the first time I saw the episode.

The "vampires don't breathe/do breathe/don't have to breathe but can breathe if they want to" inconsistency makes me crazy.

Personally, I chose to interpret Angel's line as, "I am so worn-out from running that I currently don't have the lung capacity to save Buffy." On the other hand, Angel was a pretty fit guy. Why would he be unable to save her, but Xander would be able to? I dunno.

Yeah, that one bugs me as well. It's just a weird error.
Since vampires can use their other muscles, why shouldn't they be able to use their lungs? A vampire performing CPR should be even more effective than a human performing CPR, because the the oxygen in the air the vampire breathes in doesn't even get extracted by their lungs. So, yes, it's really weird.
It's like this "vampires have no blood flow, so how can they get an erection?" thing. Without blood flow they shouldn't be able to move at all. Without blood flow, they'd be dead. But they're not, they're vampires. It's fiction. In fiction, anything is possible.

Anyway, I think it's just a mistake the writers made.

They can get erections because there is a dire need for hot love scenes. 😉

If their hearts don't pump, how do they bleed? That's another thing I've wondered about.

They're just so many inconsistencies with the whole vampire thing. I'll just take it as fiction and somehow those things are possible.

Vampires don't exist, huh? Then who's my blood going to when the American Red Cross sticks a needle in my arm every few months?

shhhh, that's a government conspiracy secret!!! You're not suppose to tell anyone!

I'd gladly give a pint of my O+ to Spike any day. Might even help Angel out, too, if he was in dire straits.

What other inconsistences have you noticed on BTVS?

Mostly just the ones that are always brought up. They're not necessarily inconsistencies as much as they really don't make sense.

-The breathing thing were discussing
-how can they get an erection
-how can they bleed with no blood pressure
-how can they digest human food without a functional stomach, or alcohol without a liver
-how do they have muscle mass and how can their muscles function if they can't breath

On a scientific level, vampires make absolutely no sense.

In "Bring on the Night 7ABB10" the Uber-Vamp tries to hold Spike under water with somewhat the same effect as waterboarding, and Spike struggles, but of course he can't drown. If "Prophecy Girl" makes no sense, this makes even less. Let's face it - mythical creatures with mythical properties cannot really be held up to scientific examination as if they were real.

Add to this, Connor sending Angel to the bottom of the ocean and expecting him to remain there without breathing.

Hush! You're destroying my fantasy. 😛

haha sorry, I'll try not to do that again
Yes its true that vampires do not breath, but they do have a wicked sense of humour!
They only pretend to breathe, why? Look at what's said here.

The answer is it's all mystical so it can't be explained in science.

But my fanwank answer is, Angel obviously replicates breathing, maybe it's even muscle memory just happens automatically, so maybe something happens to the O2 that passes through his dead lungs that makes whatever he breaths out completely 02 free, or just harmful from the dead lungs? (Although this is such a stretch, logically I agree with JCoatsworth a vampire should breath out more 02 then a human so it would actually be more effective)

The same thing would apply to Spike and the drowning, he replicates breathing (again just as we dont think about breathing, it just happens).
Logically Spike should have thought "just stop breathing" when he was dunked under, but in a situation like that he wouldn't have been thinking logically, and even if he's dead having your lungs fill with water would be incredibly uncomfortable even if the results would never be death.

I thought it might have been better if Xander had found her alone, rather than having Angel with him. It was gonna be Xander that saved her, it's always Xander.
