This or that character used to be my favourite, but now it is...

Do you find yourself liking different characters now than you did when you first watched the show? I don't mean like "I liked Buffy in season 1 but not so much in season 4". I mean, have your changed your opinion about the characters after watching the show a few times?

For example, personally I started disliking the character of Buffy quite early on "“ I found Faith way more interesting, which somehow made me really annoyed with Buffy.
These days I quite like Buffy though. I like her as a character (to watch on the screen) but less much as a person (like, if I knew her irl, I don't know how great friends we would be).

Tara I was crazy about at first, but now, not so much.. She's cute but less interesting as a character than I thought first time I watched the show.

Another example is that it took me three times of season 5-7 watching to make me not dislike Dawn 😉

Anyhow, are your favourite characters the same today as they were a few years ago? If not; how/why did they change?

My favourite character was Buffy for a long time, still like her a lot but her crankyness sort of annoyed me in later seasons. Didn't like Willow much at first, when I began watching the show, but I think she's awesome now, so much character development. Always liked Xander, Spike, Angel and Giles, well almost always. Anya has only recently grown on me in rewatchings, I'm not into shallow capatalistic people. 😛

Xander was my fave character when i first started watching the show...but then Spike arrived and things changed. lol, that's not really what you meant, is it Epo?

when i was first watching the show, Willow really grated on me. it took me a long time to understand her character and why she was there. she seemed out if place in the first two or three seasons, and i think it was when she met Tara that i really started to like Willow as a character on her own and not as part of the group that i just had to accept.
Buffy was never my fave character, she was always way down my list when asked to name my top 10 characters. but watching her grow and develop from a high school girl, to a grown woman finally able to accept her place in the world, i learned to accept her for who she was. now she rates much higher on the list.
she's still not my number one fave character. lol, my fave characters haven't changed since S3...Faith and Spike.
the end. 😀

The first time I saw Faith was when she was crying in the rain begging Angel to kill her, and I was like "Wah...get over yourself girl". Then I discovered Buffy fans, and I couldn't understand why they had this big rave-on over Faith. I watched all the Buffy/Faith stuff, and I still didn't get it. Then she dove out of that prison window with Wes under her arm, and I've been a total Faithaholic ever since. I rewatched the episodes, and I was like, "Oh yeah, now I get it."

lol, yeah I liked her more when she was redeemed
That's also the episode that I was introduced to Faith. The crying in the rain one. I've not loved her more than in that moment. The scene where she's dancing in the night club and beating the crap outta everyone is also a high point.

You identified with her character, but then one day you woke up and realised that, "hey, I'm not that interesting" so neither is she.

No? Come on, Know? :silly:

I don't really understand why people like Tara. Or that some people actually have her as their favourite character. What did she do? Punch the air(wasn't funny), and the joke about the insect reflection. Oh and she died. Everything else she did was to service other characters. Not service in a motherly way, purely to advance the story or the other characters, mainly Willow obviously.

I just don't get it. The only thing I can conclude is that people identify with her complete lack of charisma and in some twisted way hail Tara as their favourite character to raise their own self worth. Or Alyson Hannigan is such a good actor that viewers see Tara through the eyes of Willow and want to love her, because Willow does.

I think her death and the way she died triggered her being a favorite chacter.
I'd have to go with Xander...Loved Xander in the beginning even loved him in the end, but the writing started to be "unfunny" and the fact that he was with Anya was starting to turn my stomach.

I still wanted him to kinda like Buffy all that time I guess. But now I see Xander as the one who sees all in a different light. Even in the high school episodes, he was always the one who got it all.

I've loved Tara since she grabbed Willow's hand, and the two of them sent the coke machine scooting across the floor to lock the door.

I think I love YOU right this very moment =)
I've loved Tara since she grabbed Willow's hand, and the two of them sent the coke machine scooting across the floor to lock the door.

Yeah I love that moment. But I also don't get why people love her character because it seemed very underdeveloped most of the time. I grew to love the Tara/Willow relationship but I don't know, maybe if there was a Tara-centric episode before she died. I really feel the same as Buffy and Xander in Family.

Xander: Yeah, that was a tangled web of lies, sweetie. I'm not really sure what kind of thing she'd ... I mean, I don't really know her that well.
Buffy: (nods) I know.
Xander: (quickly) I mean, she's nice.
Buffy: (quickly) Yeah! Yeah, nice ... nice. I-it's just, I-I sort of...
Xander: I don't necessarily get her ... but she's really nice.
Buffy: Yeah. There's ... just that thing.
Xander: (agreeing) That thing.
Buffy: That ... thing of not understanding-
Xander: Half of what she says?
Buffy: As for example. But she's super nice.
Xander: You betcha.

They continue looking at books.

Buffy: Think there'll be a lot of Wiccas there, heavy Wiccan crowd?
Xander: Well, that's sort of her deal. Her and Willow are all Wiccie. Swingin' with the Wiccan lifestyle.
Buffy: Which is cool.
Xander: Well, yeah.
Buffy: I just hope we fit in, not awkward.
Xander: With Willow it's like, she's got this ... whole new thing in her life. But she's still Willow, so I can always figure her out. But Tara, I just know she likes Willow, and she already has one of those.

well, in 'angel', connor was my very first favourite character ever (well, at the same time as fred). i absolutely despise him now. go figure...🙂

as far as on 'buffy', i already pretty much liked everyone who id seen appear on angel, so they had an automatic in, and pretty much could not understand any reason to like anyone else. then as i actually started watching episode by episode, i started to like all the other main characters around at the time, mainly oz, xander, and giles. now xander is one of my favourites, and though i like tara, and like her better for willow, i think oz rocks!

EDIT: ok, oz was actually on angel once, but for too brief a time compared to, like, willow, spike, faith, or even buffy.

Hehe very understandable about Connor :D

Very understandable choices 😀

Then she dove out of that prison window with Wes under her arm, and I've been a total Faithaholic ever since. I rewatched the episodes, and I was like, "Oh yeah, now I get it."
I'm glad you finally got it, I was honestly worried there for a bit, scary post 🙂

You identified with her character, but then one day you woke up and realised that, "hey, I'm not that interesting" so neither is she.

Actually yeah, but I realized I was more interesting than her.. kind of. Or like I wasn't as shy as she was. She's still cute in my opinion, I like her with Willow "“ cause I love Willow and they're adorable together... But Tara on her own isn't so much of a character...

Hah, cute.
When I first saw season 7 I hated Kennedy, but now her character isn't as irritating. I also seem to go back and forth between liking and disliking Riley.

It was the same for me, Faith was annoying the hell out of me in the beginning, but that feeling took a drasctic turn, I think it might have been in season 7 rather than in Angel though but I'm not sure..

The other one I changed opinioin about is Kennedy, couldn't stand her at all the first time I watched season 7, I was so angry about her and Willow getting together. Now I'm more okey with it, and with her. Sometimes it just takes a few times of watching for me to get used to a new character/couple..

i think buffy changed in season 6, i started to dislike her a bit when she was using spike. that wasn't fair to him. i never really liked Riley and I hated kennedy. she took charge of the potentials and acted like their boss and i didn't like that.
