Well, Soviet Union spy intellectuals who didn't get arrested all changed their identities and went into universities as "social science" professors in the 50s. They loved Marxism in the 50s but couldn't talk about it after 60s so they repackaged cultural Marxism as "social justice".

It takes a while for the maggots to die out after a dead body is rotting. It also takes a while for cultural Marxism do die out after Soviet Union's legacies are rotting.🙂
 
It's a shame that a uni took steps to be inclusive of everyone and open minded, and people just have to ruin it by making a joke out of it. How hard is it to have a little respect? This just comes off as transphobic to me.
 
The only "feel good" part of this story is that this may be the straw that breaks the back of political correctness and mollycoddling that has poisoned campuses lately. The ideals of "inclusiveness" and "safe spaces" will be completely reversed in real life.

So just because "real life" sucks it means that we should just let it slide when people are racist, homophobic, sexist, transphobic etc? To me that's what it sounds like when people say that safe places shouldn't exist, or that unis are "too politically correct".

As someone who lived on campus and just finished 6 years of study, I do believe that university is as much a social experience as it is an educational one. I applaud any institution that focuses on being all inclusive. It helps out a lot of people who would otherwise not be comfortable in such a setting. It can be the simplest of things that makes a difference.

And trust me when I say that minorities such as people who are trans or non-binary are fully aware that they might be treated very badly out in the "real world". But if they can be accepted in one major place where they will spend the majority or their time for 4+ years, it makes a big difference.
 
I don't applaud them for doing this at all. It's a waste of time and resources. A twelve-person team spent over a year investigating and researching whether they should start to include pronouns on the class roster. If the average cost of tuition was not in excess of 50 grand then it might have been warranted, but maybe the BS committees and years of research for common sense answers are why college grads have to go twenty years before they can start to pay off their student loans.

If you want to do the student some good don't worry about pronouns on the class roster and instead don't handcuff them by having them head over heels in debt by the time they graduate only to find they cannot afford to live on their own and have to move back in with their parents. The amount of college grads that live at the poverty level continues to raise. Underemployment rate has risen to 14%. Half a million college grads are forced to work in fast food.

Pronouns aren't the problem.

Well I do agree with two things. This should have been common sense, and studies are way to expensive!
Pronouns are a problem. I can't imagine how much it would bother me to not only continually be called "he" by others when I know that's not what I am, but not even be allowed to call myself "she". And I'm sure everyone, if they actually stopped to think about it, would agree. If students can't even be made to feel safe and comfortable in a university, which is meant for young people trying to gain an education, what hope is there for society? People have to learn acceptance somewhere after all. Just because one rude person decided to take advantage is no reason to ridicule a school for trying to make life easier and more bearable for students. That in no way makes it an unprofessional school, or anything else to de displeased about.

I consider any arts degree granted by a university in the "yellow" or "red" rating to be bogus and any scientific or engineering degree to be tainted. In one university near us, uttering the phrase "Israeli apartheid" could get you suspended or expelled. No learning can occur where free expression is thwarted. These universities are not institutions of higher learning, they are institutions of indoctrination.

A number of comedians including Jay Leno and Bill Maher used to do university gigs but have blackballed universities as being impossible to perform at. No one is allowed to laugh.

Political correctness is another evil that should have some light shed on it. I worked in a company where the woman in charge of Human Resources could never be tripped up on political correctness - she used every phrase and word appropriately. And she kept that company lily white, with the exception of one Filipino technician and a Sri Lankan accountant. There was a happy ending to this - she hired one purebred Caucasian CFO who fired her. He came in the door one week and she got punted out the door the next week and the rest of us in the company applauded. Political correctness does not cure racism, it is used to conceal it so it can grow strong. PC people may be proud of considering their language to make a difference, but ask yourself this: is there a girl who will not go out with a short guy but will go out with a vertically challenged guy? Obviously not. Is there a company who will hire a person of colour but not a black woman? Of course not again. But political correctness is a conceit that is forced on people and requires people to editorialize, not with what they believe but with an approved editorialization. If you are an American, the father of political correctness does not allow anyone to refer to you as an American, you are a Yankee imperialist running-dog. Political correctness did not prevent Chairman Mao from killing over ten million people, the same order of magnitude as the Stalinist purges.
 
This risk turning into a semantics debate, which is pointless. I'm not talking about sensoring people here, I'm talking about basic rights which can help people in minorities feel more welcome. I'm talking about speaking against racism. I'm talking about respecting people's pronouns. I'm not talking about using black vs. Person of colour. I'm talking about speaking up against discrimination in higher learning institutions. This has nothing to do about using "proper language" and "innofensive language". You can still be racist and homophobic, and everything else in the book even if you use person of colour instead of black. I'm not talking about being PC in the sense you're using it to simply use innofensive language but then in turn have very problematic actions. I'm talking about refusing to allow people to discriminate, verbally (which would for example include racial slurs and misgendering someone on purpose), and with their actions. This is why this policy was adopted, to allow people to identify their pronoun, it was about trying to help against transphobia.

That's all well and good but this is ONLY for the faculty. It's not for, nor will it be seen by, the student body. So the whole thing is pointless unless there is a history of discrimination and transphobia from the staff... to which I reply why are they still on the staff?

I wouldn't be too surprised if there was a history of transphobia and discrimination coming from the staff. I've known profs to purposefully misgender kids in their class (and also people who have done it by mistake, which is where this policy would help). Unfortunately, profs can do just about anything and they still won't get fired, at least at the uni I went to.
 
UofM is ranked second in the nation (out of nearly 3000 schools) of on-campus rapes, it leads the nation for on-campus burglary; but they pay a twelve person committee to study for a year on the best ways to get the faculty to use proper pronouns. It's just a joke.

When combined with an identifier it becomes a personal pronoun. ie Her Majesty is a personal pronoun.
