I started watching Buffy during season 7. I don't recall how consistently I watched it though and while I was also watching reruns on Fx at that same time, because I hadn't started from the beginning there were lots of things I didn't "get".

So, I have questions for those of you who watched Buffy and Angel while they were airing.

What was the general experience like for you? Did you watch with friends, or alone? Did you spend time reading info in magazines and watching promos, anticipating the next episode? Were you involved in online fandom at that time? (Can't remember how long BB has been around)

What plot twists and character changes were most surprising/shocking to you? How did you feel about Angel returning in season 3, Joyce's death, the resurrection of Darla in Angel season 1 etc? Which episodes/scenes/events moved you?

Were there things you didn't get at the time of airing? Things you spent time speculating on? Like who was Dawn, what was the First's plan, what Darla would give birth to, where the heck is Pylea etc?

What did you think of the finales of both shows at the time of original airing?

One last miscellaneous question: when Spike got his soul back in Grave, did you think that was his intention or that he was really seeking to have his chip removed/deactivated but the demon have his soul instead? Was this a deliberate mislead by the writers? Were there other misleads that took you by surprise?

I started watching, but not properly, in season 2 but it wasn't till season 3 when Angel came back that the show got me hooked so I watched weekly from season 3 on. I watched season 3 and 4 on Irish TV but we were like a season behind, so season 5 was on an English channel at the same time.

I watched The Gift in a friends house without having seen any of season 5 (or I think I'd seen the first few episodes I can't remember)

I'd bough season 1 on DVD and gotten caught up, then I bought season 3 then 2 over the summer before season 6 started (I'd seen all of 3, but only like 1/4 of 2)

My best friends mom bought the Angel VHS box sets and we'd all watch Angel together, and we got Sky over that summer as well, so I started watching both Buffy and Angel on English TV for seasons 6 and 7

I wasn't really a member of online fandom, I used to visit the old Buffy Site, which I can't really remember except that had a Buffy animated Gif, it was very dark and one of the icons was a chalice. I only really started using the internet during season 6 but it was mostly spoiler hunting and reading stuff about the show, not actually interacting with other fans. My first fandom thing was taking part in a Buffy RPGs in a chatroom that I think was part of the offical site, but I can't remember now, and I think I started that during season 7.

Before that I used to buy the Buffy magazine from Forbidden planet, and Sky used to have a spoiler hotline you could ring select a show and it would give you information about upcoming episodes. The first time I used that was right after the season 5 finale (I used it in secret and never told my parents as it was a premium charge per minuet) I also remember downloading video clips on Once More With Feeling right after it aired in the states but hadn't here, and we only had dial up internet, as broadband wasn't available in most of Ireland, so you used to be charged for the amount of data you downloaded, so I can only imagine I cost my parents a load of money on internet bills.

I used to get promo clips from the internet and synopsis of the next episode from Teletext, you could check up to 1 week ahead only, you the moment an episode of Buffy finished at 9pm you could go to 1 week ahead and check what the next episode was about.

What plot twists and character changes were most surprising/shocking to you? How did you feel about Angel returning in season 3, Joyce's death, the resurrection of Darla in Angel season 1 etc? Which episodes/scenes/events moved you?

The best plot twist for me was Angel coming back, I knew he'd died at the end of season 2, but it wasn't till he fell from the sky that I really wanted to know why he was back and how he was back.
Joyce's death I ruined for myself as I watched The Gift before seeing most of season 5, same thing with Dawn, a friend of mine explained that they added a sister to the show (before the explanation was out) and we all thought it was some stupid just drop her in and pretend she was always there.
I watched season 1 of Angel before I saw season 1 of buffy, so Darla was more of a shock when I watched Buffy season 1

My favourite kinda twist was when Kendra showed up, and the explanation for her made perfect logical sense, the idea of a slayer dying and another being called just seemed so simple a story but made perfect sense, I loved the mythology behind it, that was my first mythology moment, where I realised I loved back story and a larger story behind just the weekly episodes.

Were there things you didn't get at the time of airing? Things you spent time speculating on? Like who was Dawn, what was the First's plan, what Darla would give birth to, where the heck is Pylea etc?
Dawn was the biggest one, even having watched The Gift before most of season 5, I didn't fully get Dawns story, so her story was still interesting as it unfolded.
I remember hearing about Willow being the big bad for season 6 before it started airing (from the spoiler hotline) so I spent all of season 6 wondering how that was going to happening. A lot of time reading online about Buffy coming back, how it would happen, everyone online from what I remember had figured it would be Willow and magic that brought her back. I remember joining Angelfire(?) or yahoo groups about Buffy to read other peoples theories but didn't post.

I didn't know about message boards properly, and I remember hearing about them a lot but not knowing what they were so I eventually googled them, found out what they were and then in the same night googling Buffy and message boards, this was the first one that came up and I joined

What did you think of the finales of both shows at the time of original airing?

The Gift had me gob smacked, I went on a year of wanting to know as much as possible, so read every spoiler and rang the spoiler hotline all through season 6, by the time season 6 finished I realised I didn't enjoy the series as much, and thought maybe it was cuz I knew everything before it happened, so then avoided spoilers for season 7.
The season 6 finale I liked becasue I loved Willow and though her going dark was amazing.
The season 7 finale was weird, cuz I really thought they'd kill Buffy again, and I remember not believing it was over when it finished.

One last miscellaneous question: when Spike got his soul back in Grave, did you think that was his intention or that he was really seeking to have his chip removed/deactivated but the demon have his soul instead? Was this a deliberate mislead by the writers? Were there other misleads that took you by surprise?

All during the lead up I though he was going to get his soul out, but when it happened I got that it was just a mislead, I didn't think he'd been tricked, I thought it was what he wanted but we (the audience) had been mislead. I didn't know people thought Spike was tricked into getting his soul till I joined here.

I can't think of any other misleads, but I think the most shocking thing over all the series was Freds death, I didn't think she'd die, or I thought they'd get her back, same with Tara.

Thanks, I love reading these comments.
I began watching when a friend asked me to tape "Once More With Feeling" for him. Other than the movie, which I enjoyed as a light comedy, but not really impressive, that was my first exposure to the show, and I liked it from that pint on. The earlier seasons were playing in syndication, and I found a web site, now long defunct, that offered detailed summaries of all of the earlier episodes, so I was able to catch up without any real problem.

I did see the finales of both shows, and while I thought that Buffy's series ended perfectly (it was already common knowledge by that time that Spike was going to join Angel's team the next year, so his death wasn't all that bad for me. I did regret Anya dying, though.)

I thought that the final scene in the alley on "Angel" was a total cheat. Here we have the series lead provoking a showdown with the series Big Bad, and we don't get to see the consequences of his, in my opinion, rather brash and ill thought out action (I'm CERTAIN that there are people waiting to jump on me for that, but, as I said, that is my opinion) For what it's worth, I think that the "solution" that they used to explain it in "After The Fall" was a total cop out (again, my opinion, and I make no excuses for it) I could have written a better solution than that, and, in fact, I think that I did, but that's beside the point. Joss cheated me. It wasn't the first time, and it wasn't the last, and I don't mean that his solution disagreed with mine, it's the total deus ex machina method that he used to avoid actually having Angel face the consequences of his actions. Being sent to hell, I could live with, if it had only been Angel and his team. Transplanting all of LA there was absurd (my opinion again)

Agree, disagree, or totally ignore it, your choice.

Now, as for Spike's soul...

I wasn't really surprised that he got his soul restored, but I was a little surprised at the way that it was accomplished. Now, here's my reason, take it or leave it.

During the time that Buffy was on the air, at least during Seasons 6 and 7 and another year for Season 5 of "Angel," the WB had an official Buffy website, similar (but, of course, not nearly as good) as the Buffy Boards. I was a member there using the name "Whhte Avenger," ( a typo that I couldn't get corrected)
Sometime during Season 6, there was a thread started called "Give 10% Of Your Soul To Spike," or something to that effect. The response from the members was that Spike received something like 500% of souls from the members. Call it wishful thinking on our part if you prefer, but I have always felt that that vote provided at least a small amount of influence into the final decision to give Spike back his soul.

Ok, I don't get this. Do you mean that the network or Joss or the other writers were actually asking the fans to make a decision as to which way plot should go? Because that's not something I can see Joss doing.

And an aside about the Angel finale. Obviously I asked for opinions/reactions and you are totally justified in having yours, but I jut wanted to make a comment. In a discussion at Whedonesque.com about the Angel finale, a member said:
It ended by not ending.... That was a statement. The shows statement. The fight never ends. There is no win, there is no loss. And no matter how small your numbers or how big theirs, or viceversa... You fight evil, without compromises. Thats the "work". And thats the only way that show can end; they fight. In a desperate corner, hurt, uneven... Thats the heart of the whole show. "Lets go to work."
Joss himself replied:
[Y]ou nailed it. Well nailed.
Now, whether that explanation means anything to you is up to you lol. Obviously you can disagree with Joss about how things were handled in either show (i do, but not about this. This makes perfect sense to me).

Oh yeah I forgot the Angel finale,I agree with WA, I was outraged. I think it's a terrible ending, I don't care that it was a statement, I don't watch TV for statements, I had grown to care about characters and the ending left their fates hanging when they knew they were canceled and didn't have to leave it as a cliffhanger in that way.

I felt cheated out of an ending, being a fan of sci-if shows we get stuck with enough cliffhangers for shows that get canceled prematurely. But to know it's the last episode and end it like that was unfair, I thought. I completely get the meaning and it's a great message, but it's not a piece of art that requires a lot of thought, it's supposed to be an entertaining tv show and I felt we deserved a story rather then a message.

agree with WA"? Man, you're trying to lure me into a false sense of security just before dropping the boom. But I'm ready for you. Hell's coming to the party, and you're on the devil's guest list. You ain't foolin' me even a little bit.
What was the general experience like for you? Did you watch with friends, or alone? Did you spend time reading info in magazines and watching promos, anticipating the next episode? Were you involved in online fandom at that time? (Can't remember how long BB has been around)

For the most part, I watched alone. It wasn't until S7 that I met someone who also watched the show so we could discuss it when we met up. And I didn't get involved with anything online until the final season of Angel, so I was able to commiserate with the fans when it was cancelled, lol.

I did read the BtVS magazine, but it wasn't really the best place for spoilers, so I remained pretty much unspoiled for most of the show's run. Although, I did, somehow, find out about Spuffy pretty early on in S6, I think possibly just after the first ep aired in the UK. Don't know where or how I found out, but I do remember telling a friend of mine that Spuffy was going to happen, lol.

What plot twists and character changes were most surprising/shocking to you? How did you feel about Angel returning in season 3, Joyce's death, the resurrection of Darla in Angel season 1 etc? Which episodes/scenes/events moved you?

I think the biggest shock for me was probably Buffy's death in 'The Gift'. Like I said, at the time, I had no sort of outside influence or anything to tell me that the show was coming back or not until the little bit 'Buffy will return next year' after the ep aired, which I didn't hear the first time around, because I'd recorded the ep and switched the whole damn TV off after the end because I was so upset, lol. So I spent a while thinking that that was the end of the show. (Kinda wish it was actually, lol)

Were there things you didn't get at the time of airing? Things you spent time speculating on? Like who was Dawn, what was the First's plan, what Darla would give birth to, where the heck is Pylea etc?

There were/are a few things that I only got when I watched the show years later. None, of course, that I can remember off the top of my head, lol. Most of them were little things, stuff that doesn't really relate to the overall plot. I'll fill this in better if I remember some things, lol.

What did you think of the finales of both shows at the time of original airing?

At the time, I loved both endings. I STILL love both endings. I never really got the whole 'Buffy forced them into this, she didn't give them a choice, she's just as bad as the Council' argument. Yes, she asked for the spell to be cast, but she never forced any of those girls to fight. She DID give them a choice and they still have that choice now, in S9.

AtS I liked because it was different. They went out fighting the way Angel always fought. They knew they couldn't win and they fought anyway. I liked that.

The only thing I DON'T like about those endings is that fact that they're not the end. With the way the comics are going right now, I wish they hadn't bothered.

One last miscellaneous question: when Spike got his soul back in Grave, did you think that was his intention or that he was really seeking to have his chip removed/deactivated but the demon have his soul instead? Was this a deliberate mislead by the writers? Were there other misleads that took you by surprise?

Back when I first saw the ep for the first time, I was a die hard Spike fan, so it was always my opinion that he went to get the chip out. I wanted to believe that Spike could do no wrong and really wanted to make up for what happened in 'Seeing Red'. Looking back now, I still think he went for his soul, but I don't think it was the noble gesture other people seem to think.

I fell for a lot of the Dawn misdirects, I thought she was going to turn out to be a Potential. because it made sense to me that, if she had the same biological makeup of Buffy, then she should have had it ALL. I also thought she was going to be the main Big Bad of S5. I thought that she was going to turn out to be some demon or witch that had manipulated Buffy and her friends into believing that she was Buffy's sister and then was going to take them all down from the inside.

I used to watch it with my younger sister. We'd sneak upstairs and really belive my mother didn't know we were watching it lol She thought it was too scary for us. I used to be so baffled by that because Buffy was never scary.

I would spend my WHOLE week waiting for it to be Buffy Day again. On the day it actually aired I would be so distracted. You could pretty much forget about me paying attention in afternoon classes or doing my homework correctly.

I didn't have internet until I started college (and Buffy was long over) so I didn't participate in fandom at all until I was 19. I didn't even know what fandom was or that it existed until then.

What I did do is buy the Buffy Magazine. Any extra information I had on Buffy I got from that or fom TV guides or teen magazines.

What plot twists and character changes were most surprising/shocking to you? How did you feel about Angel returning in season 3, Joyce's death, the resurrection of Darla in Angel season 1 etc? Which episodes/scenes/events moved you?

I squeed for joy when Angel returned in S3. I tried to will him with the power of my mind to walk back over to Buffy at the end of Graduation Day Part II. There are an awful lot of seasons that I get this pang in my heart when I watched them (and even still now): when Angel rings Buffy in City Of, when I realised they really were going to tear them apart in IWRY. I gasped in genuine shock when Drusilla came into that hotel room and turned Darla in front of Angel. I have never felt more validated as a viewer as I did when Buffy gave her "I killed Angel!" speech in Selfless. I had been really waiting for that. It was even more effective because I didn't know it was coming but was willing Buffy to say it as Xander was coming at her. I hated S5 of ATS but I couldn't have been happier with ending.

Were there things you didn't get at the time of airing? Things you spent time speculating on? Like who was Dawn, what was the First's plan, what Darla would give birth to, where the heck is Pylea etc?

For years I thought Justine was a Slayer called after Buffy died, I never knew about the UPN/WB situation re: crossovers during BTVS S5 & ATS S3 so I was convinced for a VERY long time that Sky One had just skipped a "meet in the middle" episode.

What did you think of the finales of both shows at the time of original airing?

The smile on Buffy's face and Angel's "Lets go to work," were perfect final scenes for those characters. There's stuff in both episodes I'm not crazy about but the last gasps of each show were perfect in my eyes.

One last miscellaneous question: when Spike got his soul back in Grave, did you think that was his intention or that he was really seeking to have his chip removed/deactivated but the demon have his soul instead? Was this a deliberate mislead by the writers? Were there other misleads that took you by surprise?

I'll put it to you this way, it wasn't until I joined fandom that I realised that there was any other option other than he went to get the chipped removed. When I watched the show my understanding was that he went to get the chip out and the emon double-crossed him/outwitted him. The idea that Spike went for his soul was utterly preposterous to me (to be honest, it still is.)

Back when I first saw the ep for the first time, I was a die hard Spike fan, so it was always my opinion that he went to get the chip out..

I meant here that I thought Spike wanted his soul, not the chip out. I was kinda the opposite of Kean, I didn't realize the chip was a theory until I got online.

"Lets go to work."

Fight schmite. The fight may never end, but the individual battle most certainly does, and leaving Angel and his team facing overwhelming odds taking a stand that reeked far too much of Thermopylae or the Alamo isn't fair to the characters or the audience. Yes, there will always be evil, and as long as there is, there will always be someone willing to stand up to it. But "Let's go to work," doesn't have to mean, "Let's commit suicide trying to stand against a foe that we have no hope of slowing down, let alone stopping."

What was that that Buffy said the previous year about not fighting a stronger opponent on his terms? "Run away. Seek the high ground. Make the fight your own." Angel did none of those things, and, whether they volunteered to fight or not, he had no right to throw his friends' lives away in any such manner.

Having the dragon switch sides and save the day tells me that Joss had painted himself into a corner that he never expected to have to get out of, and he had to cheat to keep Angel and the others alive for another season.

Watching Buffy in the UK was a nightmare back then.

In those days, UK TV stations couldn't wrap their heads around the idea that fantasy-type shows could be adult primetime viewing - they figured it was just kiddy stuff.

So the BBC used to show Buffy in the early evening, horribly edited with most of the violence and sex references removed. It was terrible.

The only solution was to stay up late and catch the unedited versions they'd show after midnight.

Not to mention the fact that the UK airing would be months behind the US. I remember using my creaky 56k dial-up modem to prowl the internet for spoilers. XD

I still remember all the controversy around the Season 3 finale. Crazy times....

Because of Angel's leaving or the destruction of the school?

Actually worse.

Because of the Columbine High School massacre, the finale was postponed just hours before airing.

I remember everyone going completely apeshit. The finale didn't air until months later. =/

Like LyteHouse I had the fun of the BBC, and then the fun of Angel! I got the Buffy and then the Angel magazines, although after season 2 of Angel I stopped watching it as it aired and read the plot from online until I could get the season on VHS, I managed to watch the finale of Angel on sky afterwards and was surprised at the ending.

What was the general experience like for you?

Awesome, I loved every second. I watched from the first episode.

Did you watch with friends, or alone?

Alone, but i'd chat about it the next day with my Mum or my friends.

Did you spend time reading info in magazines and watching promos, anticipating the next episode?

Yes I used to buy the BTVS magazine when it was out and looked forward to the adverts of it.

Were you involved in online fandom at that time? (Can't remember how long BB has been around)

Yes, I've been a part of the fandom since 2001

What plot twists and character changes were most surprising/shocking to you? How did you feel about Angel returning in season 3, Joyce's death, the resurrection of Darla in Angel season 1 etc? Which episodes/scenes/events moved you?

I suppose Faith's actions BTVS and in Angel. And Angel leaving Darla and Dru to it in W&H...also Darla's death and Anya's. However the most devastating thing for me at the time was Doyle's death. In fact all the deaths now I think about it. Joyce, Jenny and Tara.

Were there things you didn't get at the time of airing? Things you spent time speculating on? Like who was Dawn, what was the First's plan, what Darla would give birth to, where the heck is Pylea etc?

Oh definatley, every episode came with a bundle of questions about the next episode.

What did you think of the finales of both shows at the time of original airing?

I was gutted. Totally gutted. I thought both shows ended perfectly but still gutted.

One last miscellaneous question: when Spike got his soul back in Grave, did you think that was his intention or that he was really seeking to have his chip removed/deactivated but the demon have his soul instead? Was this a deliberate mislead by the writers? Were there other misleads that took you by surprise?

I thought it was a bit of both at the time..Spike was not one of my fav characters first time round.

The worst one ever for me was when Fred was dying, and they talked about getting Willow. This was immediately followed by a commercial break, with me dancing around my house like a leprechaun on acid, only to find out after the break that my beloved Willow was too busy to help... it was horrible.

Also, Buffybot appearing in bargaining part 1, confused/shocked me at first.

I watched random episodes here and there, but really got immersed in the show while Season 5 was on BBC 2. Once I had got over the price of the magazine I bought it every month!! I used to go on the BBC 'Cult' website, they also had a forum I would read and occasionally post on.
The arrival of Dawn confused me, as I thought she was probably in earlier episodes I hadn't seen and I had missed them talking about her etc... Buffy's death was so shocking, I loved that whole arc though. I knew Tara would die, but didn't know Spike would get his soul back.
I remember I didn't cry at either finale first time round, to be honest I think they left me not entirely complete and was more moved by other episodes.
I believed that Spike went to get his chip removed in Grave.

Thanks for that, great questions!

I remember BBC Cult
I started watching Buffy in s7 when it aired (or maybe it was s5 of Angel, I can't really recall), but at that time I knew nothing of the show, so while watching the reruns, it was as though the show was brand new.

What was the general experience like for you? Did you watch with friends, or alone? Did you spend time reading info in magazines and watching promos, anticipating the next episode? Were you involved in online fandom at that time? (Can't remember how long BB has been around)

I mostly watched alone, and sometimes with my dad. I remember getting the BtVS magazines every month, I still have them all somewhere in a box, I was completely addicted. I was not involved in the fandom until later when I was in highschool, which is when I found the site.

What plot twists and character changes were most surprising/shocking to you? How did you feel about Angel returning in season 3, Joyce's death, the resurrection of Darla in Angel season 1 etc? Which episodes/scenes/events moved you?

Back them, internet was not as readily accessible, so aside from watching the series out of order, I didn't get any spoilers. I remember being devastated when Tara died. I remember talking to my mom about it for hours, poor mom, she must have been so tired of me talking about BtVS. I'm also surprised she never asked me if I was gay, I was very much in love with the Willow/Tara pairing lol. I also remember being really shocked near the s7 finale when the bomb goes off, I was sure all the potentials had died. I also remember that I was suppose to be out with my parents on the night of the finale, but I made us stay home so that I could watch it, that finale blew me away, it was pure satisfaction the first time I saw it. I don't really remember my reactions to the return of Angel of Joyce's death though. And I barely remember my first Angel watch, aside from Doyle's death that broke my heart.

What did you think of the finales of both shows at the time of original airing?

They both blew my mind. I know for sure I caught the original finale of AtS, not sure about BtVS, but in both cases they left me very satisfied. Not Fade Away is still one of my favorite finale of all time.

One last miscellaneous question: when Spike got his soul back in Grave, did you think that was his intention or that he was really seeking to have his chip removed/deactivated but the demon have his soul instead? Like Lyri, I really didn't know this was even a theory until I came on here. To me, it never even occurred that he was seeking to remove the chip, I can't say I knew he was getting his soul, but the chip thing didn't occur to me either. As for other mislead, I would have to say the only obvious ones is putting Tara in the opening credits, there I was thinking she was officially part of the main cast. There was probably other stuff, but I don't remember, it's been so long.
