Thought for the Day: Social Media Isn't Private

It's so true that nothing is really private on a page like Facebook or Tumblr. Especially since the whole idea is to be open and honest. I was recently in a job interview and got the job because upon searching the other candidates FB page she posted pictures of herself drinking heavily at a party. It's common practice now.

Wow. What kind of job was it? In some ways that's wierd, you should be able to spend your free time as you wish. If you post something offensive I can see why you wouldn't get the job, but it's strange that this should be a factor, just drinking.

Perhaps the company sees gettin trashed and posting pictures of it for the public to see would not reflect well on their image... Especially if it's a job with kids.

It was for a day care, actually. The company wasn't necessarily traditional, but wholesome in nature. I don't think it was necessarily that she was drinking, but that she was broadcasting it on Facebook blatantly. I can see how it would turn me off as an employer. But I don't like that "Facebook checks" are done at all. I post some relatively private thoughts on there, it's weird to think that a potential employer looks at it to decide my candidacy for a position, and that it's a big a factor as my work experience, resume, etc.

I totally agree. I think it absolutely sucks that anyone can go on your personal social media account and look at what's posted to determine whether you're right or wrong for something. What I post on Facebook has absolutely no regard to how I'd do a professional job, you know? But at the same time, some jobs require people to be in the public eye a little more, and I can see why pics like that can get people in trouble. But again, I don't think that someone's personal social media account and/or what they do in their free time away from a job should be a deciding factor in whether or not they can do a job. That seems like a weird form of discrimination.
 
Hahaha, so the question arises if BB is all private... Just something to think about!
