Thoughts on Buffy Season 8

Am I the only one who thinks that the new series is way too high tech? Moving into the Twenty First Century is one thing, but Slayer Central is just a little bit too "Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." for me. I will, of course, read the series, because I am a Whedon fan, but this just ain't my Buffy!
 
Well, everything changes as the seasons do. That's one of the things people said about ATS season-5. Working for wolfram and hart really was different from the hyperion.
 
Uh...what is Buffy season eight? I've never actually heard of it..call me an idiot, but yeah...
 
Joss whedon has written a comic book that is effectivly season 8 and continues on from some time after chosen. the first issue came out in mid march and number 2 is due in early april. The comic is expected to run for about 25 issues and will be written by some ex-buffy alumni, just liek the show was. first issue was great - it didn't really bother me the whole hi-tech thing, really looking forward to #2.

I've read that that was also a criticism of Joss' Astonishing X-Men work, amazingly enough. Some people thought he got too obsessed, infatuated with the "sentient danger room" storyline...focused on the high tech too much.

It does feel very 24ish, with Buffy as Jack Bauer. But it's too early to tell where this story will go. Buffy's gonna be on the move, seems like. Wonder if her operation will break down at some point.
 
I did think it was a bit "High-tech" for the whole slayer thing. I mean in all 7 seasons they never touched a gun, well except for the werewolf hunter, and now they all have them. I was always wondering why not. I mean they had crossbows & all, so why not some silver bullets. That is one of the legions, Vamps don't like silver. We never saw any silver stakes or anything. Also the Army Gen said they have like 1,500 strong (slayers) or something crazy like that. I am wondering where they got the $$ from. My first thought was the Watchers, but they were destroyed. I guess not all or Giles went out recurring. There is probably a "watcher in training" program that now got thrown into it.
I wonder if were going to see Giles as like, "the high commander" or something. Or just some old retired guy. Living out in the country.
 
If you think too hard about the original Watcher's Council, it makes no sense. It's just like an ancient cult, association...like the Freemasons or something. They were interested in preserving their power, their secret knowledge, more than anything, seems like. They gave no material support, funding to their slayers...not even a little monthly stipend or something.

Notice the Slayers in 8.01 *aren't* using firearms. More like oversized harpoon guns which are the functional equivalent of Ye Olde Crossbow. There are valid reasons the Slayer and her friends never used guns. Firearms are loud, noticeable, and are much less easy to explain away than swords. It's easier to handwave away a broadsword as "just on my way to SCA practise, officer!" than a shotgun. Any gun big enough to take down a demon reliably will be much too obvious to hide from the cops, and a more concealable handgun in the real world often won't kill a normal human reliably. Also,t a Slayer's primary enemy are vamps who aren't as vulnerable to guns anyway.

Of course, the real reason Slayers don't use guns is dramatic license. The Slayer is a lone warrior of light fighting the darkness with her strength, skill, and kicky boots of martial fury. Flourishing a battle axe to decapitate a vamp fits the story. Blowing said vamp's head off with a shotgun, not so much.

Anyone else love the line about the "Killing something with a Crucifix". I just thought I'd throw that in - I thought it was brilliant - hence my Avatar.
 
Well Buffy did have some kind of gun. She used it to get threw the force field thing. As for killing those things, she didn't use a normal gun, that true.
 
I think they went with the more high-tech image to fit more to a comic book. I definitely think this setting works a lot better than previous Buffy comics.

I enjoyed issue 1, but I still think people are overreacting to this. It's certainly not season 8 of Buffy in my eyes. The show was made what it is by the actors and directors and writers and everybody else who worked on the show. Just having Joss on board for this comic doesn't really make it true canon imo. But I'm going off topic, my point is that the high tech image would have been a bad move if this was a true televised season 8, but I think that for the comic they're ok to do what works best.
