Thoughts on Giles/Willow

Having reread through this thread I take issue with the frankly baffling notion that Giles 'never really cared for Willow, he just liked bossing her around.' What a load of horse-hooey!

From one perspective Giles actions in 'Grave' are one of the greatest acts of self-sacrificial non-romantic love in the history of either show; he comes to Sunnydale to save Willow, putting his life at severe risk in the process. And after he takes care of her and ensures her recovery personally.
Why did he do this if he didn't care about her? Because she was Buffy's bestie?

Willow-stans hack me off no end sometimes. He holds her to account precisely one time and they get butt-hurt.
 
I have not read the entire thread, but I'll just say, that's what the world of fanfic is for, you let your imagination run wild!
I've seen many stories with W/G pairing. In some sense, I can understand it. Willow definitely crushed on him.
 
Obviously I respect the opinions of everyone on here, and maybe Willow did admire Giles for the same share of the level of intelligence, and thought that he had a delicious British accent. Though I don't think Willow ever crushed on him (did you see the shocked 'WTF' look she had on her face when he hugged her in 'Doppelgangland'?!). Yeah, I don't think there was any crushing going on there, personally. lol.

But, hey, some people see things others don't. Some of my sister's friends thought my brother looked like Agent Mulder from the x-files, yet I see zero resemblence between the two! Some people probably think Lorne and Fred could have been a couple. Or that Gunn and Faith secretly wanted eachother (okay, this one might be obvious). I'm sure that somewhere in the world there is somebody who ships Clem and Xander!

Everyone on here has the ability to think uniquely - and that's why I love this forum. 🙂

In "Where the Wild Things Are", Willow says now she remembers why she had such a crush on Giles on seeing him singing.

Weighing in on if Willow had a "crush" on Giles.

I don't think it was a crush, it was more that she thought he was interesting and smart, and was curious about him being new at the school and all. She admired him, mentioning that he came from he British library, correct? If I recall, she doesn't say anything about how cute he is, or anything that would indicate she has a crush on him. Not like the crush she clearly has at this time on Xander. Please correct me if I am wrong.
 
Not because I can get ideas into my head and have to act on them. Nope.

I vaguely remembered both scenes, but not the specifics, so you just saved me a lot of time from obsessing in trying to remember, thank you!
Willow was attracted to his cosmopolitan flair which stood in stark contrast to, seemingly, everyone else she encountered in the little one Starbucks town.
 
Of course Willow had a crush on Giles; he was handsome, brainy and worldly. Very exciting.

Jeez, Willow must've thought her head was gonna explode every single morning, because she got to hang around dry, worldly Giles AND cool new pretty girl Buffy all the time. She was all 'I don't care about apocalypses, my list of cool new friends that I have just, like, tripled!'
(In my head she wasn't really close with Jesse, he was very much Xander's friend)

And to Giles Willow was obviously very relatable for an american school girl, actually probably more relatable that valley girl Buffy actually, certainly in S1. I'll bet the only reason he didn't immediately attack every computer on sight, with an axe, is because Willow likes/uses them...so they can't be all bad.
 
Now I want to see an episode where Giles attacks all the computers with an axe...

And we should have had him singing more often!

Any adult who dates someone they met when that person was underage is a disgusting creep. No exceptions.

In a lot of small towns, people may know each other for years before they get to dating age, then they date each other. Age does not seem to be as much of a barrier.
 
The age gap is too big especially since the younger one is in their 20s.

If they knew each other when both were kids, that's different. My objection was specifically to dating someone that you met when they were a kid and you yourself were an adult. Like if you're a mom that dates your son's friend you met when he was 11, that's gross even if you don't start dating him until he's 18 or 19.

Giles was 43 when he met 15/16 year old Willow and he acted as a mentor and authority figure in her life.
 
So remember, if you, at 17, meet somebody at 11 and then you never see them again for 20 years, and then you start dating in your thirties...you are an abomination and disgusting.

Yeah, that's rational.

Edit: This actually happened to a friend of mine who fled Northern Ireland when he started to look like a possible off-duty soldier. He returned after peace talks 20 years or so later, met up with a nice Irish Catholic girl he had know well then- his friends little sister- and they married and fell in love.

But, y'know, adult, child, moral outrage, whatever.

I know technically, but come on... ain't no way a 17 year old is an adult. Not many 18 or 19 year olds are either for that matter.

I wouldn't really call 17 an adult though. When I think adult I think of like Jerry Seinfeld being 38 and dating a 17 year old or Steven Tyler dating a 16 year old when he was 24. Or back when he was popular a 23 year old Don Johnson dating a 14 year old. Granted they would go on to marry but still... those are all just kinda eew.

It's an adult in the UK. Over 16 you are no longer considered a child.

Sure, there are plenty of eww cases as well as a few aww cases. I have a problem with blanket condemnations when it comes to the real world, never mind a fantasy show.

But generally I agree about the permissive and corrupting state of Hollywood.

Edit: @Spanky: 17 can be considered an adult in some circumstances, depends on your upbringing and responsibilities. You can join the army at 16 in the UK. In fact that's what my friend did, ironically, he just did in in England rather than Belfast. Safer.
 
Eh, if the show made it to grad school, maybe. Or, if the characters were explored as maturing college students. But, not in the way the show was done.

Although, I think an episode where Giles accidentally marries Tara in the ways of the hill folk might have been funny, in a Tabula way. But then again, making Tara weirder is one of my favorite hobbies.
