Thoughts on S1 halfway through.

I just finished episode 11 of Angel and thought I would share my thoughts so far since it seems like people enjoy reading them about Buffy. I'll admit overall I'm not liking Angel quite as much as Buffy. I think my biggest problem is the plot seem to flow better in Buffy. There aren't any real plot centered episodes in Angel at least not so far. That being said, the last three episodes, "Hero", "Parting Gifts", and "Somnambulist" have been really good and have me interested to see what happens next. I'm curious to find out more about Wolfman and Hart and see if Katie ever forgives Angel for his past. On to the individual characters.

Angel- I really did not like him in BtVS. He was too brooding and his tortured soul thing got old really quick. I like him a lot more in his own show, though. Maybe I'm just not a Bangel fan (though I still like him better than Riley when it comes to Buffy's boyfriends.) He seems like a more interesting character on his own.

Cordelia- I hated her so much in the first couple of seasons of Buffy. She was so shallow and stuck up I wanted Buffy to hit her, but she has grown a lot over the series and now into Angel. I really like her, she has shown a lot more depth than she did in BtVS.

Doyle- He's not a bad character, he just doesn't seem to do much and while I liked him, I was never really sure why I liked him. His death in "Hero" elevated him, though. That was a great episode and his death was very well done.

Wesley- Maybe I'm just a Watcher's Council fan, because I like both Giles and Wesley. He hasn't been in many episodes, but I've enjoyed watching him work with Angel and Cordy.
 
S1 tends to have alot more one-off episodes rather than having a single plot connecting them all, but give it time. I remember that I wasn't all that into Angel when I first started watching it. It tends to grow on you.

Tell me, what did you think of the episode "I Will Remember You"?

I thought it was a very good episode and Angel's sacrifice speaks volumes about his character.

S1 of Angel (and this changes a bit as the series progresses) is structured differently than Buffy. It's much of a procedural cop/detective show than Buffy is, and it doesn't have the feel of building towards some major finale like Buffy. I think in part that's because they're trying to establish Angel as his own guy, and show that he really is a detective.

I'm actually a huge fan of S1. "I will remember you" might be my all time favorite episode (it's kind of the Bangel flagship), and "Hero" isn't far behind it. I was a big Doyle fan (I see what you mean a little bit. Doyle is very much an ordinary guy thrust into an extraordinary situation, but he's very likable. Plus, I loved him with Cordy), but in my books he has the best or second best death in either series.

Cordy on Angel, the whole way through, is amazing to me. She changes an incredible amount, especially after S2. And Wes is great. He has an amazing story as well.

But Angel on his own show is the man. I really liked him on Buffy, and with Buffy, but he's pretty incredible on his own, and I remember first seeing the series and not being sure if Angel without Buffy would have worked. But man, it sure did.
 
S1 is quite slow, but it picks up from S2 onwards. I also preferred Angel's (boring on BtVS!), Cordy's, and Wesley's (sigh... Wesley really annoyed me on Buffy) characters on AtS than on BtVS.

It seems that Buffy has that vibe to turn all her man into boring lemmings at some point, til they get the chance to leave.
Angel rocks and is ironically much more "alive" and so much more interesting than with Buffy. So, I was an Angel and Buffy shipper, but when you look at Angel and Cordy...that woman brings something out in him, not one ever managed to do before.
 
I have to say I love Angel the series more than Buffy a lot of the time. Mainly due to the characters growth and interactions like you said Cordy has more depth. Hero is one of my all time fav eps and I think the death of Doyle was a huge moment in Angel.
 
I'm re-watching Angel right now and I'm close to half way through the first season. It's just as good as I remembered. There's a great feel to the early part of the series, almost like a supernatural noir. I just finished the episode where Cory gets her new apartment where Dennis debuts and it's a lot of fun.

I hadn't really thought about it before, but the character depth, even when it's just Angel, Cordy and Doyle, is incredible. Far, far superior to Buffy in S4. I'm watching them simultaneously right now and I've been enjoying Angel much more (although S4 does get better).
