Wasn't sure where to post this but I definitely want this to be a purely Spuffy thread. Don't want a shipping war or anything.

I just want to sort out my feelings about Spuffy. Which is easier to do if you're trying to explain to someone else. Plus maybe you guys can give me some insight into my own thoughts because people around here seem to be good at doing that.

I love to see Spike and Buffy together. I love that Spike fell in love with her. I love all the exploration of the idea that William has always been different from other vampires.

Lately I've been seeing a lot of things that almost make me feel guilty, for a second, for liking Spike and for liking this pairing. Like there is something wrong with the way I view relationships or the way I even view myself.

I guess the easiest way to go about this is to go season by season.

Season two for these two pretty much begins the first time that Spike sees Buffy. He is obviously instantly attracted to her. This makes me want to see his reactions the first time he saw the other slayers. He didn't have the same reaction to Kendra at all. She was barely even a blip on his radar. So was that a turning point for him, to feel attraction to a slayer? I don't know.

It's obvious from early on that Spike is different from other vampires because of how devoted he is to Dru. And it's furthered by the fact that he was willing to partner up with Buffy to save the world. I don't think any other vampire in history has done that.

Season three hardly counts except that Spike shows that he is fairly awesome at reading people which is a quality that comes up very often for his character.

Season four is all about bringing him down and making him have to deal with the fact that he is basically a caged animal. I feel that if he really wanted to, he could have found a way to get that chip out in a day. The guy went out and GOT HIS SOUL. He could have totally gotten that chip out, one way or another. Way before he tried to in season five.

The other thing that sticks out in season four for me is at the end of Something Blue. Spike takes much longer to look disgusted than Buffy does. Which I always found interesting. 😀

Then in season five, he realizes that he's in love with her. I do recognize that at this point he's not exhibiting traits of selfless or even healthy attachment to Buffy. Shrine and mannequin? That is until! He gets the Buffybot. Also completely wrong but! It's through his experience with the Bot that he realizes that any replacement for Buffy simply isn't enough. Then he lets himself get nearly beaten to death, to keep a secret that if let out, would hurt Buffy.

From this point on he's so much more. He starts growing and changing, which people CAN do. I've done it. He starts genuinely helping her, without the guise of asking for money. He's there to support her, whatever she chooses to do. And after The Gift, he stays in Sunnydale and takes care of Dawn. Because he promised. Is there another vampire that would so this without a soul? I think at this point the chip becomes slightly irrelevant. Even a regular vamp with a chip in his head wouldn't do what he did.

Then season six. Oh man. This takes two characters, one who has done the ultimate sacrifice, who is a champion and another who has all the potential to be one as well, and rips them both to shreds. All over the place, there are arguments against Spike in this season and the defense is always, he didn't have a soul.

But Buffy did. And I can't shake the idea that if she hadn't been using him, if she hadn't told him that he was just convenient, that their entire relationship could have gone differently. Up until the end of OMWF they were actually friends.

Someone on the boards here said that Spike is always talking about bringing Buffy into the darkness with him when in actuality he was being brought into the light. I really loved that and wish I could remember to credit them . . .

Anyway, Buffy was easily just as abusive as Spike in that relationship. So in effect, they used each other. They took what they needed from each other at that time. And it was disastrous and well, call me crazy, but a little bit beautiful. I mean beautiful in the way of perfect despair.

We watched a great hero fall. Someone who died to save the world turned into . . . whoever she was in season six. She hit her ultimate low. And Spike went with her. Told her to put it all on him. . .

Then of course. The bathroom scene needs mentioned. I don't defend his actions but, at the same time, can slightly understand where he was coming from. Buffy went the lowest she could go when she beat him in that alley. And he went as low as he could go . . .in that bathroom. But for me, the important thing here, is that he stopped. Some men with souls don't. And he was utterly horrified by his actions.

So horrified he went and got a soul. He saw what the soul did to a vampire. He saw the suffering and knew that that was what was waiting for him. And he took it, so Buffy could have the man she deserved. And he did that, after she beat him to a pulp.

Then season seven. I guess there is a lot of debate over whether or not Buffy loved Spike. So much debate that I began to wonder myself whether or not she loved him. And that is the main reason for this post. I've always thought that she did and then I started doubting myself.

The main thing is that she didn't automatically run to him when she learned he had a soul. Is that supposed to mean that she didn't love him?

He had literally seen the absolute worst of her. They had spent a year abusing each other. I'm very glad that they didn't simply get back together. They had a lot of issues to work through and I think that they did. And after much thought, I do think that she loved him.

It's not in a completely obvious way but I do think she did. She went out of her way to show him that she thought he was a good man. She would have let him kill Principal Wood. Which is a main point with me. Buffy does not take human life lightly AT ALL. But she would have let that happen.

The moment though, that I really believed, is when she rescues him. That look in her eyes when she sees that he realizes it's her. . . And the way she helps him walk out. There is a lot of tenderness there. The love she has for him at this point, isn't the all consuming passion we've seen from them before but it's so much more sustainable and real.

And then obviously, Touched, and End of Days has great moments. I've never really questioned Spike's love for Buffy, and I don't think I ever will, but if I had, his speech in Touched would have ended that.

And Buffy, she comes so close to admitting that she does feel something deep and real when she admits that she was there with him. It's a huge step for her. She was having so much trouble wondering if she even could feel. And I'm glad that at the end of it he was the one to help her see that she could feel something romantically again.

Wow. I feel a lot better now. I no longer feel like I'm less of a person for liking this pairing. Or for liking Spike. He's an amazing character.

Sorry for the huge post.

Don't feel bad for liking a ship. Many ships have wonderful aspects and ugly/unhealthy aspects. (With the exception maybe of Bella/Edward which is all bad :P )
Nobody should feel like "less of a person," or in any way bad or odd, for liking Spuffy. Credit the writers and performers for taking what, on its face, sounds absurd, and turning it into something believable, beautiful -- and very, very complex.

Your note deserves a longer response but I'm just running through right now. well said!

Well written post! By the way, if I'm not mistaken that was white avenger who said that bit about Spike being pulled into the light.

But yeah... you shouldn't feel like less of a person at all. Spuffy is a beautiful story full of complex and serious issues and problems. The two of them hit an ultimate low point in season 6, and they hit it together. The beauty of that of course, is they can come back up together too. They're right beside each other from season 6 on. It's a really special thing to find someone who goes up when you go up and down when you go down (in my opinion). And Spike is an amazing character. He is so full of love. Sometimes (as in quite often) his actions are misguided and he doesn't know how to show his love. But he is always so full of it. You can see it on his face, hear it in his voice, feel it in his whole demeanor. No one should feel like less of a person for liking him. I don't see how anyone could.

Thank you and I love the bit about them coming back up together. Very well put.
Great post - i'm always happy to see Spuffy discussions.

My thoughts:

I, too, have at times wondered about liking Spuffy, but i just chalk it up to the writers for creating this whole thing around them and the shame projected on to Buffy for their relationship.

I think she did definitely love him, but she's at a point in life where she's not about to show it like a high school kid. What they have is extremely complex and multifaceted. They've used each other in just about every way possible: to work out emotional/psychological issues, take out anger/frustration, for support, warriors together, sex and more - i really thought it meant a lot that Buffy trusted him to take care of both her mom and Dawn...and i loved how they both developed good relationships with him. This is not to knock Bangel - but Buffy was always on guard with Angel and worried what he might think of her, but with Spike that wasn't an issue (well, except that one time he told her she had stupid hair). He made it clear that he took her as she was, with absolutely no conditions, while she saw him for the man inside. The intimate things she trusted him with (secrets and feelings) say a lot: Buffy is not the touchy-feely talk about her feelings a lot type, and the fact that she felt comfortable telling him virtually everything says a lot too. She just layed everything out on the table with him, which she didn't do with anyone else (at least not to that extent).

So... yeah...i can ramble on for days about Spuffy😛

Since this is in the Back-Steps, I need to get something off my chest. I personally get offended whenever people say that those who like Spuffy like (even want) an unhealthy relationship, one that is full of sex, lust, and abuse. The Spuffy fans I've come across (here and outside the BB) are NOT at all like that. They are intelligent, friendly, caring, and passionate people. They know and understand the complexity of Spuffy. They also know that this relationship ended up being something so beautiful and full of love. And in order to get there, they had to go through some very extreme low points.

I think liking Spuffy does not at all make someone a bad person, or want the kind of relationship they had, mainly in season 6. And if it does...well then, I've always been bad 😉 (cut to ironic scene of me writing poetry).

I've run out of rep!? What is that?

Anyway, You've got some awesome points here. I'm glad you mentioned that he took her for who she was. His love for her was actually very unconditional and that's always a beautiful thing to see, no matter what pairing or relationship is being talked about.

And she did tell him everything. And the way she did it was very realistic. Like her, I'm the type where some things just don't get talked about. Until there's that one moment, when I'm all alone with someone very important to me, and it all comes out. Usually in just a few sentences. Just like she did with him.

I hadn't thought about the writers putting such a negative spin on them affecting the way that I think sometimes but that makes sense.

Same here. I want the kind of relationship they had in season 7. And I want someone to love me as much as Spike loves Buffy (actually, I'd be fine with half as much). But I don't want their relationship in season 6.

And since we're talking about that... I get pretty offended when people suggest that because I actually like Spuffy's story in season 6 and I think it makes them so much stronger in season 7, I'm a terrible person and/or don't have morals. Or when someone says because I don't hate the bathroom scene because of what it does for the character development I'm a terrible person. Same with Spike... because there was never a point in the series where I disliked him, people say I have no morals. I don't like every action Spike or Spuffy goes through, but I do like the overall story and outcome. I also love the characters and who they are when they're with each other, who they become BECAUSE of the other. That is why I love and ship Spuffy. Not because of this or that action. I've said it several times before and I really like it... Spuffy isn't about the here and now, it's about the how far we've come. It's about the journey and the story...not the actual events.

That is exactly what I was coming across lately. I wasn't so much offended as I was a bit shocked. Of course I don't want an abusive relationship! But, in a moment of crazy weakness, I started letting that wooly-headed type of thinking get to me.

So to fix myself I came on here and wrote an epic-long post about Spuffy love. It did work. I feel much better now. And everyone has been so nice and supportive. 🙂

My shock led to being offended, as I read/heard more and more, lol.

I couldn't find the older thread, but check out this article. It's kind of a read, but the author is brilliant with her interpretation of Spuffy. 🙂 And it always makes remember why I love this pairing (next to watching the show, lol).

Since this *is* the Back Steps, I sometimes wonder if the people who say things like that, or look down on Spuffy, have some hangups about sex. Sex is, after all, for adults, a normal and natural part of life. (Abuse, not so much, but it is a complex relationship.)

Just for the record, I know we had a speed bump before my recent epiphany 🙂 for which I've apologized, but I hope you're not referring to me. 🙂 "Terrible person" and "have no morals" make no sense just because someone appreciates a character the writers and the performers have been brilliant in creating.

I sometimes wonder that too, lol! And sex is only part of Spuffy's relationship, not all of it.

I honestly wasn't thinking about anyone in particular... kind of a general trend. I didn't even remember we had a speed bump of sorts... haha
I have noticed that Spuffy tends to appeal to those who are a tad more realistic in their outlooks, while Bangel tends to appeal to the idealistic. In almost every way Spike and Buffy complement each other, their strengths and weaknesses tend to bolster each other. They go through great highs and intense lows, and they both do these things together. They always fight side-by-side, and are essentially equals. Yet, the Spuffy ship isn't as pretty, or as glamorous as Bangel is, it forms across several years, and is never really obvious until Seasons 6 and 7, but to me at least it is the ship that has a real and very beautiful core, and a solid foundation that stands up to everything, including the death of both characters. Besides I always like rooting for the underdog.

Funnily, I kinda feel that way about people who like Bangel. Well, kinda minus the sex part. Except in a certain comicbook issue. 😛

Most of it I knew, not even deep down. But you're right. You've made such good points that I LOVE to read someone thinks them. It's great to see that people see and understand (yes, Spuffies who are already spuffies too!) the greatness of that relationship. Because a relationship is never perfect. Buffy and Spike aren't perfect and that's beautiful!

That essay was awesome. Thanks for showing it to me. She said a lot of things that I've really thought about fairly deeply. Such as vampires representing the Id.

Also about how Buffy doesn't want to accept certain things about Spike because then she might have to question whether all vampires should be killed on sight.

Very very interesting.
