Thoughts so far (up to Issue 19)

So I'm finally getting around to the comics, and I gotta say I'm finding the adjustment a litte rough. I really want to love the comics, but I don't know that I do. I love the artwork, and I even don't have that big of a problem with the storylines (which seems to put me in the minority). I think my biggest problem is the format. I'm not a comic person. I miss the depth of the show. I miss the variety of dialogue. It just doesn't feel like its Buffy without the depth. Simply put, it's not enough. There isn't enough content and character analysis for me. There's not enough substance. It feels like an echo of the characters that exist in the show, and it makes me a bit sad.

I think I would like it better if it was an animated series or novels even with the same storylines. I need more dialogue and more to go on than simply the visuals that the comics give, stunning as some of them are. I just can't seem to "get into" the stories the same way I could when it was on air. Does anyone else have this problem or a similar one? Is there a way I could approach the comics (or any comics) to make them more enjoyable?

No, I feel the same thing. I really like comics, but the two dimensional format does feel limited sometimes. And when comics do have inner monolouge and give more of the characters, it often feels forced.
 
It really does feel forced; it's like the whole inner monologue thing with the characters is solely there to further the plot and explain what's going on, and not because it would be what the characters were actually thinking....

Maybe it's just me and comics, but so far I'm lukewarm towards them at best.
 
[MENTION=6115]randiann[/MENTION] I 100% agree with you. I'm not really a comic book fan but I tried these because its Buffy. I didn't get very far with it. Like you I love the art work and everything but it really felt like it just lacked substance or something. The idea of it being a series of novels or something like you said sounds so much more appealing to me 🙂

I recently brought the motion comic on dvd thinking maybe that might be a bit of a better way for me to get into it. But I was bored out of my brain and totally put off by the voices, lol.
 
Oh I know! I know I should let the voices go, because it shouldn't be that big of a deal, but I actually had to turn subtitles on so that I could tell them apart (I don't hear the best, so I like them on anyway). They all sounded the same to me, and without their mouths moving at least I had a horrible time telling whose voice was whose.

Can anyone find a reason why I should keep up with them past this point? Right now I'm just kinda sad that the comics are all there is left to explore. I just want more Buffy in my Buffy than the comics seem to give.

There's some stuff with B/A that happens towards the end. It turns out being not so great, but as a shipper, there are some moments you will enjoy just on that level alone.

If I'm being honest, if it's Buffy you are looking for in these comics you will be hard pressed to find her. I read them because I can't not read them. Apart from a handful of great moments I have hated the majority of the comics.

DH have marketed the comics as canon. And as a bare fact, it is canon. However, Joss has spoken about how he would toss it all for a chance to make a movie with the cast. His involvement has decreased significantly, and most of the story lines that we are getting would not have happened if we's gotten a S8 on TV. So to me, these are canon... on notice. Maybe they will stay canon, but it is just as likely that Whedon could toss it all if he felt like it. They just don't matter in the way the show does.

So, read if you want to know what is happening, but other than that, I don't see a point.

Lyri already spoiled the end for me...but now the Bangel in me is a little more intrigued...
I felt like this in the beginning, but they grew on me. I read comics growing up, so reading Buffy got me back into that mode. I think if you're familiar with comics, it's a bit easier to slip into that mode. But even then it can be difficult. Yes, I would have preferred novels. But Whedon is a comics man, plain and simple. He already did comics before even thinking about Buffy season 8 (Avengers, Runaways, Fray). I just don't think he would put the care into novels that he would into comics.

Overall, so far I think I liked season 8 better than season 9, despite season 8's shortcomings. I know I'm in the minority here. I have also read all the IDW Angel comics- there's some really excellent stuff there! And just like the shows, at times I prefer it.

I say to keep going. Issue #19, so you've already read "The Chain", which is one of the finest things I have ever read. And I prefer the 1st half of the season (that you've already read) to the 2nd. If you'd like to discuss as you read, we did a re-read last season (it's a sub-forum of the season 8 forum), and it's spoiler-free, so you can add your comments there. I promise to read what you've read & comment on them, nicely. 😉

Oh, I forgot to add that if in the end, the comics are not your thing, that's OK too. It's not everybody's favorite medium. that doesn't bother me, what bothers me is people who continually comment on the comics forums that they hate the comics. @@
 
These are my sentiments exactly, Although I know Whedon is a comics man, I fail to see how episode scripts couldn't have been written and then artwork added rather than minimal dialogue fused with, albeit beautiful, 2D artwork.

Buff was always about the dialogue and funny 'WP' & 'Sheep' stickers in the background for me.

Rleasing high quality Scripts slowly would be far superior to releasing graphic novels every day of the week for me.
