The blogger Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit has an interview with Tim and author John Scalzi, in podcast form:

The section with Tim is great"”it's really wide-ranging. He talks about his career and all the shows he's worked on. And he makes his new upcoming pilot "Drive" sound so cool! He calls it a cross between North by Northwest and Magnolia, lol.
 
Sounds cool. I'm definitely going to check it out soon.

Sometimes I think you and me might be the only Tim fans here though.
 
Theoretically, "Drive" seems like it has a good chance to broaden Tim's base. It sounds "Lost-like" in its scope and cast size. We'll see. He just sounded so psyched as he was describing it...
 
Yeah, and when he gets psyched, he has a way of getting you psyched. I really want to see Moon is a Harsh Mistress, and Drive now. Especially Drive. He's convinced me that one can work. I think the Lost crowd will warm to it.

That's the first time I ever listened to a podcast. They're pretty good. I could get into listening to more of them. The other writer was worth listening to also.
 
I think I may check out "Harsh Mistress". I've never read a Heinlein novel. He sounds like a quirky, colorful character. Just reading the Wiki bio, I can imagine Joss taking some cues from Heinlein stories for aspects of Firefly.

I thought it was interesting that Tim mentioned he wanted to take Heinlein's political themes seriously. I had the feeling that Paul Verhoeven's film was basically trying to create a parody of the original Starship Troopers book.

Drive had better get a good timeslot and tons of support (yeah, I'm talkin to you FOX!).
 
The mistake I made with Heinlein is I read Stranger in a Strange Land First, and nothing I could find by him after that could compare, so I couldn't get into his others. Also he has this kind of elitist attitude that becomes irritating.

I thought it was interesting what Tim was saying about how important it is to have the network behind you when you're first sending the series off, and how he's never had that. I think he might get it here, because the networks are still looking for the next Lost.
 
Maybe FOX will get over their attention deficit disorder now"”after Lost, Desperate Housewives...they see the potential hugeness of complex, serialized dramas (fingers crossed).

I think the key with "the next Lost" is to make characters #1, the concept #2. The characters in Surface, Invasion, Threshold...just not as interesting.

Tim gets characters, obviously. Now, if viewers can just hold on for awhile...
