Whether you're Spuffy, Bangel, Spaith, Fuffy, Cangel, or any of the other dozens of possible pairs (or maybe even, trios) in the Buffyverse, have you ever, honestly, believed that Joss would ever give your ship a permanent happily ever after as long as the series continues or even has the slightest possibility of continuing? Whether he uses these things just as a way to assure continued interest, or he actually is a sadistic troll who would rather keep everyone hanging, I don't know, but Joss seems determined to not let anyone have more than a brief taste of happiness before snatching it away again.

Well, I'm not really a shipper of any kind, but in an interview I read that Joss said the only two people from his TV shows who would never ever have broken up are Wash and Zoe.
So, no happiness for any of the characters from the Buffyverse. 🙁 😛

I highly doubt he will ever give any of the main ships a happily ever after. For that to happen he would have to pick the would be happy couple himself out of the love triangles and tragic love tales he has set up and maintained for years...and I get the feeling he prefers the triangles and broken loves more that any of the individual happy couples.

I also think that Joss really enjoys the tragic couples that can't/don't end up together and he doesn't seem to stray to far from the things he likes.

I could see him giving a couple like Xander and Dawn a happily ever after...well I doubt we would really see the happy part; we'd just know that they stuck together.

It all goes back to the curse of the hellmouth
"Face it where doomed"

You can't write a drama about people who suffer no losses or reversals of fortune. I'm afraid the Buffyverse doesn't permit it although Xander and Dawn seem to be a good match. Drama consists of fear, love, destruction, fighting and all the sins and virtues we know of. It cannot stand still.

To be fair to Joss the fragility of couples is a more accurate portrait of current couples: there are very few happy endings these days. It leads to a classic cynical vs realism debate, considering his marital status I'd go with realist

Well, to a certain extent (some more than others), I'm a supporter of all those "ships" you mentioned, but the only one I personally see, assuming the Buffyverse goes on long enough of course, having a true "happily ever after" is Buffy and Angel. That being said, the theme of their relationship has always been no matter where they are, they are "forever", even if they aren't together. And I'm perfectly happy with that as well.

For me, and this is just a personal opinion of course, the other relationships you mentioned go like this: Buffy and Spike are two people who love each other but who don't work beyond passion. I kind of view Buffy and Angel as two people who are made for one another but can't be together and Buffy and Spike as two people are wrong for one another but love each other anyways (which in many ways is very realistic, and relatable). To me, they have an ending, and "Chosen" was it (and about as awesome and epic as you can get). And it's a happy one. However, by "The Girl in Question" Spike is about as true a champion as anyone else, and I'd have had no problem had he gone home with Buffy.

Buffy and Faith to me, well would be awesome 🙂D), but would be a short-lived affair. Really intense, really, really hot but ultimately not going to end well. Still, love to see it...

And Angel/Cordy, I look at that one as two people who were best friends, it grew into more but it just couldn't have worked. But if it had, they would have been happy together. Maybe more so than any of the other relationships, which in way also makes it the saddest.

But yeah, to me the other ones all have an end, and while it's not always what everyone else is happy with, I'm content with them. Buffy and Angel though, that one is forever to me. I don't know if we'll ever see them walk off into the sunset together or something like that, but I think the message is that one day, when the fighting is done, that's what will happen. Or at least, that's what I like to believe 🙂.

Now, I'm not a shipper obviously but it really baffles me that fans of the franchise with exactly 0, that's right ZERO so called permanent happily ever afters still believe in one. It's against all reason.

Also, will an official happily ever after change anything? No, shippers will ship regardless and seriously, who cares about some comics? The vast majority of the fandom obviously does not. Whatever happens in the canon comics just isn't relevant anymore.

Oh and by the way, for the record, your ship will be permanently ruined, sooner or later, you're just putting off the inevitable. And the second, the second that happens, you know I'll be there. I'll slip in, have myself a real good day.

EDIT: Holy shit, there actually is one permanent happily ever after! Oz and Bayarmaa ( make a ship name out of this, I dare you ) Well, the exception proves the rule.

Well, there are Echo and Ballard together forever

A created with brainwashing artificial personality and a dead guy sharing a stolen body. It's not happily ever after, it's just eww...abominable. Also, different franchise.

Well, there are Echo and Ballard together forever 🙂

Come on, Joss just hadn't time to elaborate how torturous the coexistence of two strong personalities in the same brain could be... 🙂

I don't think Joss could give a happily ever after to his own characters. Heroes in Marvel Universe are another matter, he has to comply to the canon.

There is another: Tony and Priya in Dollhouse.

Well, there are Echo and Ballard together forever 🙂

Well, for their sake I hope so - imagine how awkward it would be if they broke up. Plus, there's also the fact that she's an artificial person and he's actually dead...

This thread had made me do some serious thinking about shipping and why people take part in it - when I straighten my thoughts out, I'll be back with a post about it.

I was once told the cardinal rule of relationships:

Relationships are run by the most insane person in the relationship.

Case in point: Tara put up with Willow until she started controlling her mind. Then Tara left, ending the domination by the progressively more insane Willow.

Relationships tend to take on more of a life and status of their own than the people in the relationship, at least in this forum, but also sometimes in the real world. As far as I am concerned, shippers are people who send boxes to customers. In the Buffyverse, relationships are designed for the ultimate drama, not happiness for the people involved.

What's happily ever after? Happiness is an emotion, often a fleeting one , it isn't a state of being or a fixed point. You don't arrive at it and it most certainly cannot be indefinitely maintained, never mind be embodied for an "ever after."

I'm not confident that I will see Buffy and Angel as couple for more than a burst, while canon continues. However, I believe with unwavering certainty that they end up together. Maybe they ride off into the sunset (I'll be stunned if that happens) or they go out fighting, shoulder to shoulder (what I ultimately think will happen), whatever way the verse ends, if it ends, it does so with them reunited.

I know I just don't know what you mean by "there are very few happy endings these days" implying that relationships had a tendency to work out better or to last longer in the past or something. But I'm probably just overanalyzing as usual...haha

white avenger agrees: Have you ever seen "Epitaph 2?"

That's exactly why I mentioned them. For me it was like Whedon saying "if you want a happy-ending use your own imagination (fan-fiction)"

Well my favorite ship, Spordelia, is living happily in the world of Supernatural. I know it has nothing to do with Joss but it still makes me very happy.
