To change or not to change

This year I had to do a 6 page research paper for my History class. Everyone picked a number and whatever topic was matched with that number you had to do. I ended up choosing the Seneca Falls Convention. It was the first women's protest lead by Lucrieta Mott and Elizabeth Candy Stanton back in 1848.

I was having problems typing the paper because there was just not that much information to put into a research paper. My Uncle Ken had been visiting my house that day so he helped me write the paper. I handed it in the next day (a week early) because I was finished. My teacher had neglected to tell us how he wanted us to set up the paper. So, he handed me the paper back and told me to change it.

Two days later we got a call from my cousin Veronica that my Uncle Ken was in critical condition and the doctors said he wouldn't survive. Four days later at 10:30 Veronica called again and told us Uncle Ken had died. I took off from school on Thursday and Friday because I needed to be home with my family and there was things that had to be done for the funeral, wake, and all that stuff.

I did go to school before school actually started to handed the paper back to him the same. Then I came home and that was the end of it. Today, he handed me back the paper with a big 0 on it. He said that he told me to change it last time and I didn't, so as far as he's concerned, the paper is still a rough draft. He asked me to change the paper or keep the 0. I told him, "It's the last thing I did was my Uncle before he died. I'm not changing it."

It's important for me to have a lasting memory of my Uncle before his death. Something I can actually hold on too and keep in a box or something. I'll always have the emotions and other memories, but I'd actually want something I can touch. The last memory I have of my Uncle is of him in the coffin, with his wife and two kids crying over it while my Grandma whispers, "I'll be seeing you soon, Kenny. Soon," while she traced the lines on his face from where tubes and machines had been put to try and save his life. I don't want that to be my last memory. I'd much rather have a happy memory of me and him working on a paper in my room while watching "Wrong Turn."

What do you think I should do? Change the paper and pass or keep the paper the way it is, get the 0, and have the last healthy memory of my Uncle intact.

I think you should keep a copy of the original paper and then make another copy with the changes. There is no need to get a zero on the paper, your uncle wouldn't have wanted that.

I think that the teacher was wrong in giving a zero since he has no right to do that with a completed paper.

I don't think there would be anyway that your uncle would want you to get zero because it was a paper he helped you with.

Agreeing with Beer Nut here - I'm sure that your uncle would've wanted you to get the best mark you could.

You could maybe also totally rewrite it, or do like the teacher wants, and as soon as you get it back, toss it, burn it, and only keep the draft from your uncle.
I don't know if that at all helps but, I'm sorry for the loss of your uncle...especially since you were close, I kinda know what that feels like.

Could you possibly discuss this with your parents? Explain to them why you want to keep it the way it is, and what the teacher wants you to change it? They might be able to help you in some way.

Having a box sounds like a good idea, with the paper and pictures and any things you can get, I don't know if there is much but...my neighbour, who might not have been related to me, was extremely close to me, best friends and such, and she used to do this crocheting thing, so we have tons of those floating around and other things, so part of her still lives on?
And maybe of your guys' favorite movies? I don't know if that part helps or not but,

and I agree with beer_nut and kd, just,...less timely? apologies....

Funny accent...this from a Canadian :):P
Beer Nut - I never even thought of doing a different paper and keeping the old one.

faiths5x5 - I didn't talk about it with my parents. My dad could care less if I got a 0 as well as if I was eaten by cannibals tomorrow. My mom is more traditional and hard working and would tell me to just rewrite it, despite the contrasting feelings I have.
