There are not many penguins in the northern hemisphere. I was sad for the fairy penguins about to suffer the incoming bird flu and googled how they coped in the northern hemisphere, but there is only the Galapagos penguins, no others.

What did you learn today?

I didn't know there were any penguins in the northern hemisphere, so that is new to me.

I learned the other day that Spain controls some land in north Africa, because of the recent immigration crisis there.

Gary Gygax was a Jehovah's Witness even when designing what would become Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), a game that would later impact video games and other media (including mentions on Buffy and Angel). He was devout enough to go door to door and also defend his son for not rising and saluting the US flag (as Witnesses see that as idol worship, a sin against God). That's a reminder to me to not oversimplify someone.

I'm surprised as it was seen as Satanic when it was still new. I'd have thought Witnesses would also hate the game. ('Course maybe most of them did.)

Still, I think he did other things (including cocaine) that Witnesses would also not approve of. I haven't read the full saga of Gary Gygax yet, but I'm pretty sure it will get around to such things.

I'm reading Slaying the Dragon which details the rise and fall of TSR (not to be confused with Wizards of the Coast that currently handle D&D), and it's currently focused on Gygax. I may leave a small review of it on the appropriate thread later.

When I was a kid, D&D was thought of as Satanic, and I never understood why.

Today I learned this too! I love to learn how entertainment is formed, what values it seeks to promote regardless of what the character or situation is.

Michael Jackson was brought up a Jehovahs Witness as well. He is the epitome of 1Corinthians 9:19-23 in my eyes. Summarised - "I have become all things to people of all sorts so that I might by all possible means save some, but I do all things for the sake of the good news in order to share it with others" I hope he got his Matt 25:21. The internet has so many lies about the JWs, its always great to hear about those who influenced the world for good.

Today I also learned how to spell "Epitome" but I will probably forget that.

Prince apparently was too.

Re: Penguins: Penguin was a Welsh word originally applied to the Great Auk, a now extinct flightless giant seabird that nested on islands in the north Atlantic out of the reach of Polar bears. Sadly, they were good eats for sailors. So yes, we did have penguins in the northern hemisphere, sort of.

I believe Norway has tried to release Spheniscidform penguins in the northern hemisphere, hoping they would take the place of Auks. They didn't survive.

I can imagine they were easy to catch! Ours are mostly little but occasionally a big one washes up from Antarctica.

Penguin has too many vowels to be Welsh... :D
I started to learn to play Human Nature by MJ on the clarinet. I got it at half speed, but am not up to full speed yet. I'm not sure if the sheet music is exactly right. It was fun anyway!

I learned a bit about Defiance Island (Australia) from a fic i am reading. Fortunately, i dont think it is like the fictional island!

I had good friends who were witnesses when i was in elementary school who were very kind to me. Honestly, they were a lot less judgy than my pentecostal friends (i joined the pentecostal movement as a teen)

At this point i am culturally (not religiously) jewish and believe in God but really dont have use for any religiousity. Too destructive in my life in all its iterations - mine and other peoples.

JW get too much ugly press.
