Today is the day to go to a local comic shop participating in Dark Horse's Digital Retailer Exclusive program to get your free code for the online comic "Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9: Magical Mystery Tour Featuring the Beetles" written by Jane Espenson. I'm planning to support my local retailer by purchasing either the newest Dollhouse comic or the 1st issue of Orchid, or maybe both!

I think the burning question about this comic . ..without being too spoliery - is why is he hugging those insect legs?

For those of you without a brick-&-mortar store close to you, I have a good suggestion. There's a company in my town that's an online comic book store. They're on the Dark Horse list, so I asked about it on their Facebook page, this is what they said: "We also are participating in the Dark Horse digital program and have the online exclusive Buffy comic available this month. To get one, all you need to do is to link to our store or your favorite item or category in the store on your Facebook page, let your friends know what you like about it, and then contact us about your post. I read it. I tried very hard to find some sort of meta message in it, but I've come to the conclusion that this is simply lark.

I found it cute more than funny. I loved the new names for the Bugs lol
 
I really enjoyed it. It was funny but there was also quite a bit of depth there. Jane did an amazing job in a few pages of capturing all of Spike's personality, including the bit that IDW mostly missed: "mini-marshmellow" Spike, the man who wanted to drink cocoa with Joyce, pour out his troubles to Willow and take tender care of an insane and very difficult girlfriend.

As many reviewers have noted, Spike is not a loner and he gets blue when he has no one to talk to. He needs to feel connected to other beings.

Jane is the master of hiding real character insight in humor and it's usually not until you're done laughing at what she's written to see how she has revealed character information.

Ugh! None of the comic stores in my hometown are participating in the digital giveaway, and I'm in San Diego this week and one of the participating stores is closed, the other is an online store with no way to contact, and the last threw all of theirs away by accident after Comic Con! Ugh!

I've tried everyone's previously-posted suggestions on here, but haven't had any luck yet... I hope I'm not screwed... 🙁
 
I really enjoyed the Spike comic - it was cute and funny. I love the effort Spike puts into making good use of the time that it will take to get back to earth. I love the 'B & S' Heart, and of course, Buffy asking "So you're home for good now?"

I think the drawings were really very nice. Spike looks pretty accurate in most of them. Though Buffy's choice of outfit in those last couple of panels is really questionable 😉

Can't wait for Season 9 now!!

Did you see that I mentioned above that Impulse Creations is giving away the code? All you have to do is link a product or page from their website to your FB page, tell why you like it, then send them an email with your FB link and they'll send you the code. Their website is lists in my previous post.
 
I did, Vision. I'd posted before I'd heard anything from them, but they came through late on Friday! Thanks so much for the tip! You rock :smile3:

Yay, I'm so glad that it worked!!

Oh, and BTW everybody, I did finally get it to load on my Dark Horse app on my iPhone. I was able to read it online, but I could see it in my Collection on my app, but everytime I tried to download it, it said that it couldn't. It finally did it the other day, so whatever! I'm happy it's there, I find it easier to read on the iPhone.

I have to say though that the vagina creature? Ugh!

OK, I just read it again, and I repeat my earlier verdict: I love it even more. It's so funny, it's so...Spike! I love that it's narrated by one of the Bugs. I love that they call him King. I love that he adapts to life on board that ship, and leads them but doesn't lord it over them, he actually cares about them. He just doesn't want to spend his whole life there LOL! I just giggle my whole way through it. But I don't get the ending, I don't get his response to Buffy's question: "So you're home for good now?" Is he being sarcastic? What does he mean "They'll wait for me"?

I'm with VisionGirl: I love it! I like it even more on the app than on my computer (it was almost a little fuzzy around the edges on my screen and I have a freakin' awesome screen...).

I'm really happy that Espenson held onto the same feeling of the Space Bugs that Brian Lynch truly expanded upon in his Spike mini for IDW.

While I really enjoyed the bugs, I'm glad they wrapped up their arc as quickly as they did, because I don't think they are strong enough characters to have a continued appearance. I would, however, have liked to have seen more of Spike and crew's pursuit of Wolfram & Hart across the multidimensional space prior to their arrival to help stop TwAngel.

To VisionGirl: have you read the above-mentioned mini-series yet? If not, Spike, Vol. 2 comes out the same day as the first issue of Angel & Faith #1.
 
Now I've read the comic. Not in love with the zoom function, I prefer being able to scroll through the pages, but I have no complaints about the story or art itself. I sat giggling while reading and there was a huge awww-moment in the end when I realized that Spike seemed to finally have found a home and a family. Something he's been missing since BtVS season 2. I don't think he thinks it's the ideal home or family or that he won't try to find abother home eventually, but I believe he has found a safety there he hasn't since he lost Dru. Sure, he's had lovers and friends and people to share a mission with, but no true place to call home where he's surrounded by people that think he belongs there with them. I think just Dawn and Fred has been as welcoming as these bugs. The others just had him around when it suited them.

I love that it seemed like Buffy had missed him. was maybe a bit pissed off about him being gone. I can't recall if we got to see that in season 8 when he came back.

I have not read it yet. I'm behind on my IDW Angel reading, I've only read AtF, although I intend to read the rest.

I too prefer reading on the iPhone app to reading it online, it's just easier to read.

I like your take on this, I wasn't quite "getting" that last panel.

No, but then again there was lots of stuff going on when he came back onto the scene, so it's understandable that any conversation like that would have to wait.

Very true, I have no idea how imore could have been squeezed in, but I was disapointed anyway. I'm not a really a Spuffy fan, I'm actually a bit tired of both Bangel and Spuffy and triangle-drama, but even I have been going "What will happen if/when they meet again? What will they have to say to each other? I bet she'll be angry."

I like how the rest of the spuffy interaction played out in season 8, but I was expecting "Where have you been!?!" talk, so it was nice to finally see that.
