Too old for Buffy

Yeah animation can take a long time... but as has been said, voice acting doesn't generally take long. Plus you don't need the whole cast there at once. Two characters can be in a scene together and their actors can record separately at different times. It allows for a hell of a lot more flexibility.

To be honest though, even with an animation, they'd still probably choose reboot over continuation. Like the Sabrina or Addams Family animated series.

i understand that she is older but not old and not sick or anything thank goodness. She could very well do it and they being Josh Whedon and his team which includes Sarah could tailor the action to her physical abilities. They would know what she cant do.

Given the kind of Money that Joss is obviously making now, and the power that he has with Marvel Studio, I think that the only possible hope for anything new happening in the Buffyverse beyond the comics would be if someone else did it and Joss only served as Executive Director. If that should actually happen, I would prefer that it be with an entire cast, all new characters, all new story line, with no involvement whatsoever by Sarah, James, David, or any of the TV characters. Fray would be good, or maybe a period piece about some Slayer from the past. Whatever it is, it should most importantly be new, not something tied very closely to the original series.

I 100% agree with you. I was reading an interview with James the other day where he pointed out that the only way he'd be willing to do the role would be if it happened within a few years before he aged too much to make it believable--and I believe this was dated within a couple of years of Chosen. And even though Sarah could, theoretically, play the role of Buffy yet again... I get the distinct feeling that role is completely in the past for her and she has no interest in reviving it which is completely her prerogative.

Not to mention that personally, I don't think the magic of Buffy could be recreated after all this time. So much has changed, especially when you take in the fact that David and James wouldn't be able to reprise their roles and then with Nick's current problems... The beauty of the worlds Joss creates is that there are so many other viewpoints we could see the universes from, though. Like with Firefly, it would be a really cool thing to have another series based in the same universe but with a different crew. And with Buffy, I think it would be cool to explore other Slayers other than Buffy, especially now that they're all activated.

What has to be remembered about the whole concept of the Slayer is that it features a girl (not a woman) who is the absolute last logical choice for the title of "Vampire Slayer." She looks like the one who should be rescued from the monsters, not be the single most feared demon fighter in the world. Slaying is a young girl's game, and Sarah is a mature woman and mother. She can't realistically reprise her role as Buffy without totally changing the character from Slayer to Den Mother. Time has done what the Master, Glory, and the First Evil, combined, wouldn't have been able to do. It has defeated our Slayer.

The only way for Buffy's story to continue would be a total recast, and possibly reboot, of the story. That's not as impossible as it might seem, as the new "Star Trek" movies can attest. The only real question is, has there been enough time passed since the original series was telecast for the old fans to accept the new faces in the old roles? It took decades for the fans to accept, and even embrace, the new Captain Kirk, Spock, and Bones. Would it take that long for the same thing to happen with the cast of "Buffy?"

Of course, all of this is dependent on whether or not Joss wants to return to the Buffyverse, either as writer or as executive producer, with someone else doing all of the day to day work on the project.

"Would it take that long for the same thing to happen with the cast of "Buffy?""

Maybe, maybe not. Imo it would depend on how it's cast and the writing. Fill it full of pretty dullards and weak scripts I wouldn't be very keen at all.

too old or not... I am not seeing how a movie in these days could make any sense. We have S1-S7 TV and S8-S10 Comics. So, only a short story on the big screen...I guess Joss would see it the same way. 😉

Oh god no. Whedon is on record saying he would dump the comics plot if anyone offered him a Buffy movie/live action project.

Really? I could swear I heard it the other way around...that a movie for Joss wouldnt make any sense...

@Silverspike, agreed, she said that the story of Buffy is best understood as a character arc occurring over a season and a movie would be too short. Besides, we already have a movie. I doubt a new Buffy movie would be financially viable - this is the era of the comic book blockbuster, not a Buffy film with a limited audience. This forum may have had thousands of members but only about two dozen are currently active.

I pretty much agree with you here, but I can't help but wonder, if Joss were to push hard enough (of course, he won't) would Walt Disney let him run with a new Buffy or at least buffyverse movie, considering the amount of money that he has made for them over the last few years? It wouldn't be like what they did with Statham and "John Carter." Joss is a proven live action director, he knows how to rite and direct a blockbuster, and he would be working with material that literally everyone is familiar with, and which no one knows better than he does.

If Joss really wanted to do a "Buffy" movie right now, it's a near certainty that it would be made, and made on a scale befitting the characters.

Last I heard Warner Brothers owns the rights to Buffy, so Disney, and the money he made them, wouldn't really have anything to do with it. But again, the problem goes back to in making a movie I don't think you could use anyone created from the show, as the two rights overlap.. that's always been a problem (one of many) with doing a movie.

Disney doesn't own the rights to Spiderman, either, but he's gonna be in the next "Avengers" movie. Likewise, Wanda and Quicksilver may show up in the next "X Men" movie. Deals can be made if the potential for a sizable enough profit is a factor.

Disney in fact DOES own the rights to Spiderman, just not the movie rights. Disney doesn't own anything related to Buffy and they wouldnt really want to. Why would they want to pay Warner Brothers for the rights to it? In order to do a 'true' Buffy movie they would have to buy Buffy from Warner Brothers and buy the Scoobies, Sunnydale, Faith, etc from Fox.

We're chasing two different rabbits here. What I'm saying is, if there was enough of a potential to make money out of the situation, all of the studios involved would co-produce the project and share the profits earned. As I said above, I believe that, if Joss wanted it badly enough, and the potential for a big enough profit was there, given his success with "The Avengers," the movie would be made, or at least there would be a serious attempt to get all of the concerned parties involved to go in partnership.

He doesn't want it that badly, and probably never has and never will, despite any comments that he might make to the contrary. That simple fact alone constitutes 99% of the reason why we will never see Buffy on the big screen, and the same goes for another TV series. Joss isn't the type who wants to retrace his steps. We wouldn't even have the comics today if he hadn't wanted to have his own titles, rather than just continue writing for Marvel.

I don't think you can ever say never, stranger things have happened. I think a Buffy reboot with a different cast and director/writer is more likely. But one of the things I like about Whedon is how he sticks to his guns. I think he would only do it if it was right.

To the original post SMG is just saying politely in so many words that she has no interest in reprising the role of Buffy any longer. Joss isn't interested either, he has moved on to bigger and more exciting things, so this is all moot. It's in the past. Only a reboot is a possibility at this point, which I think most of us would agree. A reboot could definitely happen at some point in the future...but I personally don't think it is quite time for that yet.

This.

Interesting as it might be, I don't see the Buffyverse being able to succeed on the big screen even if everyone was onboard with the idea. Popular as Buffy and Angel still are, to do a single movie justice, it would likely be fairly expensive to make, and sadly I could easily see it doing rather poorly at the box office.

That and we've had 7 seasons of Buffy(I'm not counting comics personally) and 5 solid seasons of Angel, not counting Mr. Boreanaz being on the first three seasons of Buffy, counting his own show is actually the character that's been in the most episodes across both series.

Much as it would be nice to see them in character again, I can also understand the idea that none of them would want to necessarily end up typecasting themselves into the roles too much, or jumping into some poor quality spin off or whatever and tarnishing their past work.

If you're going to explore the Buffyverse via tv or Netflix with new material anytime in the next decade, pick someone like Faith or Willow say as a main character but otherwise bring in all new never before seen characters. We've seen Buffy and Sunnydale. We've seen Angel working for redemption. If the Buffyverse is explored in live action again, look for another avenue or aspect of the franchise to tap into.

I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to the idea of a hard reboot at some point, where everything from the original two shows is essentially tossed out the window and they pretty much start from scratch, but if they go that route, I'm hoping it's at least a decade or more in the future for something like that.

That being said, even if SMG or Mr. Boreanaz or Mr. Marsters or anyone else aren't willing or interested in reprising their original roles, if a future Buffyverse spinoff or hard reboot does come along, I would still talk to them as a courtesy. Even if they don't want a staring roll, it wouldn't be unheard of for someone to have a walk-on roll or play a bit part of some other extra or background character in a show, or maybe see if someone's interested in behind the scenes work or something.

If they did do some sort of spinoff such as a Willow or Faith or something, personally I think the best route to go would be a really short series/season similar to the recent Marvels: Agent Carter series, something only 8-10 episodes long per season. And make each season as self contained as possible. Leave a couple odd threads or something to open the possibility of additional seasons, but basically go in from the beginning anticipating a show not getting renewed.

I agree that it could do poor box office partly because of the timing, if it was a few years after the show last aired then it may have stood a better chance. It would have to be a film too as I don't see much of a point in doing another TV verison and that would be harder to get off the ground anyway.

Personally, I think another TV or Netflix/Hulu based show would be a decent bet to actually tell a good story, a 2, 2.5 hour movie alone just isn't enough time, IMO, to really tell a decent story. That being said, like my reference to Agent Carter, a full 20+ episode season at least starting out is, IMO, not a good approach. I would go 10-12 episodes at the absolute maximum, similar to Buffy season 1, though realistically keeping the number of episodes in the single digits would probably be best.

Another thing to take into consideration also in regards to the comics, and correct me if anyone finds anything contradictory, even though it's currently 2015, from my understanding the events of the comics are set some years earlier. Buffy season 8 takes place from 2004-05, S9 is 2005-06, and the current Buffy and Angel seasons is taking place from 2006-2007.

Chronology

Given that not as many people would be familiar with the comics as they would be with a TV show, even if the comics went on for another three or four seasons, that would put it up to what, events in 2011 or thereabouts. A TV or Netflix miniseries set in 2016 or 2017 could easily work around events of the comics or avoid them entirely due to being set as much as a decade or so down the line.

I love Sarah, but she should just say that she doesn't want to return. I'm fed up of reading her same "old" comments. She's avoiding the subject and saying you're too old doesnt make sense. Buffy is not immortal, Buffy is loved even of she's more mature. Heck, Lucy Lawless is in for Xena, why not Sarah? Age? No...
