I told you my list was different then the others! Now let's remember my list is my personal top ten favorites...not nessesarily the best of the series.

I could make a seperate list of ones that I think are the best, if you'd like. Then, you could judge my pickings accordingly 😉

Baring in mind that these are top of my head favourites, my list of favourites would include:

Prophecy Girl
Band Candy
Lovers Walk
Hush
Who Are You
Restless
Checkpoint
Once More, With Feeling
End of Days
Showtime

Definitely not some of the better episodes, and with more time this list would change dramatically, but these are, off the top of my head my immediate thoughts.

And I just realised that only 3 of my favourites were in that list that was posted.

What makes the best episodes the best episodes?

Opinion, that is all.
You can try and argue that one is better than another structurally or the importance of one is more significant than other but thats all bull.

The best episodes are the ones you like the best.
You said that you have your 10 best are different from the 10 best.
I didn't realise that someone had told me there were 10 episodes that were the best from the entire run of Buffy AND what order they were but obviously you do.
That aside, if you can tell me what that list is can you answer WHY they are the best?
It isn't your 10 best, so you can't say 'because I think they are' you can only argue that someone else opinion is the right opinion.

Obviously you are taking other peoples opinion and valuing it more than your own IF you believe that your ones aren't the best.

Its like this. I love Twix chocolate bars. I have done ALL my life. I like them more than the others. Mars bars are ok but more people say they are the best so they must be the best.

Get a clue and stand firm on your own opinion.

It has alot to do with structure, arc significance, good character development, overall plot, effects, etc. Especially when referring to a show like Buffy or Angel that relies so much on continuity. As an example, "Restless" or "Surprise/Innocene" are pretty much universally constered to be two of the "best" episodes of the series - but "Restless" on the bottom off my list.

That's all. We can disagree. Whatever, it's cool. And thanks for that advice. I'll be sure to not contridict myself and "stand firm on my own opinion" from now on.

Quality is not based on opinion alone and nor should it be. That's like saying Twilight is good literature because like, 18 million kids think it is. Everyone likes the old Ford Mustangs, but they're pieces of shit. They're like drving a old stagecoach.

OK, lets take the number one on the list Once More with Feeling.

Universally loved and adored and I like it too BUT why?
Its a novelty episode.
Thats all, its fun to see our heroes singing and dancing.
As far as the plot for the episode is, its pretty weak.
The big reveals, OK they are done in song BUT if they revealed so fast in a regular episode we'd be complaining about the same issues we have in season 7 - too much crammed into such a small amount of time.

The episode contradicts itself and downright doesn't make sense (Xander calling Sweet?).

Its structure is poor, its place in arc significance is actually overloaded, there isn't much character development just revelations that seem a little forced BUT needed to be done at that time to fit with the 'songs', overall plot is terrible, effects - have you seen the Pinocchio boys? - and yet it is by choice in the 10 because of novelty.

You wanna argue that your personal favourites aren't as good as the universally accepted ones then ou aren't doing it right because it really is ultimately down to personal opinion and if your personal opinion is in contradiction with your belief then you're simply letting us know you're easily swayed by public opinion.

LifeIsJustThis disagrees: I would say this list is pretty accurate...not all my personal favorites but whatever. I would take off Grave and replace it with Crush. And Chosen doesn't belong on there either...

So now you're disagreeing with me not because of my opinion BUT because I have copied and pasted a list from somewhere else based on others opinions and THEY have ommitted one that you thing should be there and there is one you don't agree with.

You know what intelligent adult conversation is really about? Accepting other peope's opinions is up there, which you appear to not be very good at. And also, not insulting people is pretty rad too.

After giving this thread alot of thought, I have decided the order of my top 10.

1 - Passion
Just in my opinion the greatest Buffy episode
2 - Hush
Definitely the scariest of the Buffyverse
3 - Graduation Day Pt 1 & 2
My favourite season end to date I class as one episode though
4 - Prophecy Girl
I love Cordelia in this, I love Buffy in this, I love The Master in this
5 - The Body
The saddest bit of TV I think I have seen. Could have done without the vampire though.
6 - The Prom
Absolutely love this. Such a nice way for Buffy recognition PLUS it has Celebration in so extra kudos.
7 - Surprise/Innocence
This one was like a knife in the gut
8 - Once More With Feeling
Its camp, cheesy, not the best story BUT by god can I sing the songs all day and feel a happy.
9 - Tabula Rasa
The only Buffy episode that brings an actual tear to my eye...thanks to Michelle Branch being played over the last bit.
10 - Conversations with Dead People
Just an awesome concept for an episode.

Lindsey McDonald agrees: I originally agreed about the vampire in the Body, but I don't mind it so much now, after watching the commentary. Life goes on and all that. It could have been implemented better though.

I get the whole 'life goes on' stuff, I do but I just didn't like that scene.

IF it had been a scene of Buffy patrolling to carry on, or my preferred idea, Buffy coming in from patrolling saying she'd killed a vampy then we still get the same message.

Though I think it would have been more powerful if for one day Buffy didn't do any of that, let us see that although she is the Slayer she is also just a woman and sometimes that takes precedence.

In Prophecy Girl we saw Buffy choose the Slayer over normal, I would hae liked to see her use this to choose normal over Slayer - just for a day.
