In your opinion, if you had to create a list of the 20 most important BTVS characters on the show, how would you rank everyone? This is based on your opinion and explain why you made the list like that.
Here is what i think...

1. Buffy-Obiously, the lead character of the series. But remember, just because a characters name is the tv show, it doesn't mean they are the most important Character (think Dawson's Creek). I think Buffy truly does deserve this title. She has been through everything in the shows 7 years. She saved the world dozens of times, sacrificed herself, helped others, was in love, had heartbreak. An amazing character. A true hero.

2. Willow-It's amazing how much Willow Rosenberg has changed over the years. She went from being a shy school girl, to a powerful young adult, all in under 7 years. Her character has changed the most, yet her innocence has always remained with her.

3. Spike-Went from being one of the shows biggest villans in Season 2, to one of the shows biggest hero's in Season 7. His impact on the show, espechally in the later seasons, was pretty big and he deserves a spot in the top 3.

4. Xander-Started the series as one of the shows key players, and ended it that way as well. He might've been pushed aside for a little while in Season 4 and 5, but saving the world in Season 6 proved how important of a character xander was to the show.

5. Angel-Had the most impact out of every character (except Buffy) in the shows first 3 seasons. His absense in Seasons 4-7 was missed and even though he was only a part of the show about 1/3 through, he still deserves a spot in the top 5.

6. Giles
7. Dawn
8. Tara
9. Anya
10. Faith
11. Joyce
12. Cordelia
13. Johnathon
14. Oz
15. Andrew
16. Riley
17. Warren
18. Drusilla
19. Glory
20. The Mayor

1. Willow-without her it really wouldn't have been the same. She is to me one of the biggest reasons I love the show.
1. Xander-shares the first place with Willow, for about the same reasons as her...
3. Buffy-I don't always love her, but without her there wouldn't really be a show. Noone can deny that she's an important character.
4. Giles-without giles they wouldn't get very far with anything, especially in the first few seasons.
5. Anya-She was a big part of s4-7, and became a more and more interesting and needed character, and she also gave Xander happiness and storylines.
6. Tara-She was part of the big gay storyline, and to me she had a huge impact on the show.
7. Spike-In s2 he was the big villain, and later on he gave us much needed humour, and also helped the scoobies out alot. Especially in s4 he was a very important character, he created alot of humour when everything else was so depressing (s4 was depressing to me)
8. Dawn- Most people would say she was mostly just there in s6-7, but to me she was very important, and in s5 she is what most of the season is about.
9. Faith-the slayer turning bad, then good again.
10. Jonathan-I know he wasn't a big part of the show until s6, but I really loved everytime he was on the show, he was important to me.
11. Joyce
12. Angel
13. Oz
14. Cordelia
15. Drusilla
16. Andrew
17. Warren
18. The Mayor
19. the Master
20. Glory

Can't say I agree with Xander being less important than Spike. Spike was important but not top 5 important. Unless your idea of importance involves being topless. Here's my list:

1 - Buffy...Duh...chosen one. She was the centre of this universe. She is what brought everyone together.

2 - Willow. Seeing her loose her lover in such a painfull way was...well..painfull. When she went insane with anger, did we really think she was being all that evil...I wanted her to kill Warren as much as she did...but doing so just opened a door and we then saw just where that door led.

3 - Xander, the heart of the group. He was everyman. Everyone else around him either had super powers, or had some special thing to offer the group dynamic. He was average(yet funny)joe doing his part to save the world. I loved how he stopped Willow in season 6. No special powers, no big fight scene. He just brought her back with his love. He is my favorite character

4 - Giles. Giles' absence in season 6 didn't really hit home until we saw him again at the end of 6. Seeing him again reminded people of just how important he was to the dynamic of the core.

5 - Angel. Outside of the main four, he has had the most impact on the show. Buffy was still feeling the effects of his departure years after he moved to LA.

6 - Spike. To see his progression from evil, to wacky neighbour, to champion for good was amazing. He also had a strong influence Buffy's character later in the series.

7 - Tara. She made Willow stronger, and her death nearly brought about the destruction of the world...pretty damned important if you ask me.

8 - Oz. Without Oz, Willow might have remained that shy little geek from high school. Oz brought Willow out from the shadows, and Tara helped her develop into a strong confident woman.

9 - Anya. Another one of those "what do you see in her?" kind of relationships for Xander. She didn't so much change Xander, as Xander had changed her. But when everyone drifted away from Xander in seasons 4, and 5, she was there and was his steady encouragement to get out of the basement and grow up.

10 - Angelus. His dark side loomed over Angel, and all the characters. Everyone liked Angel...it was just Angelus, or the threat of Angelus manifesting himself that scared the bejesus out of people, and in turn made a lot of people keep their distance from Angel.

11 - Dawn. Opens the portals to all the dimensions. Perdy darned important. Not just that, but she brought out the nurturing side in Buffy.

12 - Faith. She was the anti-Buffy. She showed Buffy her dark side, and in the end showed her that no matter how far down the path to the dark side you go, there's always a chance for redemption...like Vader!!!
13 - Joyce. Buffy's mom. Saddly enough though, Joyce's death was a far greater impact on Buffy and the show in general, than when her character was alive. I guess that's kinda how it is in real life...you don't realise what you have until it's gone.

14 - Riley...He's one of my favorites, but not too important in the grand scheme of things. He was good, and nice and everything that Buffy really needed in a boyfriend. He opened up his heart to Buffy, and wanted to be there for her no matter what she was going through. He didn't make her miserable though, and she didn't like that...nor did the fans...masochistic freaks...

15 - The First Slayer. After she manifested in Buffy's(and the core group's)dreams, Buffy changed. It started her fascination with the dark side.

16 - The Master. Probably her toughest foe psychologically, that Buffy ever faced. Even long after his death, he effected her.

17 - Drusilla. She molded Spike into the deranged killer that he was....yay....

18 - Wesley. He came in much the same way that Giles did. He was there to show just how far Giles had come as a character.

19 - Cordelia. The reason why she is so far down the list is because she really didn't become an important character until she left Buffy, and joined Angel. When she was on Buffy, she didn't really do much. Just insulted some people, and dated Xander for a short period. Even when she broke up with Xander, he wasn't really affected all that much. The only thing that changed was that they didn't make out after they insulted each other.

20 - Jenny Calendar. She showed audiences three things. 1. Even seemingly good characters can betray. 2. Someone's happy in the Buffyverse...I guess that means that someone's going to die! 3. Just cause a characters dead...doesn't mean we aren't going to see that character(or at least actress/actor)ever again.

i will rank my 20 spanding from season 1 thru 7(and their role and importance to the story about buffy and her pals over those years...)

15. tara....

16. the mayor and mr. snyder.. they are like one too me.. and they both play important buffy parts... (i have to admmit mr.snyder is for the most part annoying...but he is the mayor dummy!!that's why he is here)

17.reily: and his miliatary team...they do shape a whole season... and reliy has a place in buffys life...

18. darla: she made angelous, which resolted(sp?) on spike and drusilla becomming vampires

19. glory: such a big part of a whole season. (and beacsue of glory, dawn is.)

20. last but not least: the MASTER. he killed buffy.. which made kendra a slayer, when she died it made faith a slayer...

fun thread by the way.. ws hard to make a list too!!

Re:

Woah- here we go:
Buffy- The slayer. Lead character. The man ( or should I say woman).
Willow- very important character throughout the seasons. Played, the school nerd, best friend, and big bad.
Giles- Played Buffys father figure/ watcher for the run of it. Had a big influence on her and her decisions.
Xander- Played "Big Brother" scoobie. There when needed, helped whenever he could. There from start to finish.
Angel- Made a huge impression on BTVS viewers. Played Buffy's first love, and a leading role for 3 seasons. Even after his leave from BTVS he still made cameos and had lasting affect on Buffy and crew.
Spike:Went from Big Bad to kinda naughty to lover boy over a span of 6 seasons, played a leading role in most seasons.
Joyce: Buffys mom. Wasn't quite as involved with the slayer crowd, but good mother all the same. Lasted 5 seasons.
Anya: Vengeance demon, girlfriend ( I know, I know-most guys will say there isn't a difference.), Scoobie. Lasted 5 seasons, died fighting the good fight.
Dawn: Little sister appeared in season 4, tagged along for the duration.
Tara: Willows lover for two seasons. Scoobie? Friend.
Cordelia:Xanders first love interest, and friend to scoobies. Again lasted 3 seasons before leaving for ATS.
Oz: Was only there for 3 seasons, but was Willows first relationship and scoobie. After leaving in S4, made a cameo later on.
Riley: Played Buffy's post-Angel love and a leading role for 2 seasons.
Wesley: Watcher for one season. Cordy love interest.
Drusilla: Played a big- bad in S2, and made cameos throughout following episodes. Also played Spikes true love.
Darla: S1 big- bad, got killed. Was Angels sire and first love.
Andrew: Little bad S6 and friend S7. Very irratating.
Johnathan: Popped up here and there throughout the seasons, and eventually played a little bad in S6.
Warren: Jerk in S5, big little bad in S6. Made dolls. Shot Tara, killed by Willow.
Richard ( The Mayor) : Amusing germaphob/ big bad for S3. Faiths father figure. Made cameo in S4.
Glory/Ben: Big bad S4. Had a tendency to transform into a male nurse with a hard-on for buffy.

1. Buffy: she's the slayer. She's the reason we have everyone else.
2. Willow: Magic really helps (most of the time)
3. Giles: Watcher capabilites are a must.
4. Spike: He saved the world! He was burned and then tormented with coming back
5. Xander: He also saved the world! And very good for morale.
6. Faith: Helped other characters understand aspects about themselves
7. Joyce: the mother figure that everybody needs
8. Angel: I guess I can't leave him out. He saved the world too and had to come back from hell
9. Dawn: Put life into perspective and became less whiny and more leader orientated at the end
10. Tara: keeping Willow grounded and having concern for all characters
11. Anya: comedic relief, example of how a person grows
12. The Master: huge effect on Buffy
13. Darla: She made Angel, and is an underlying character that is always visited
14. Glory: Was so much different than run of the mill demon, provided more for villinaism
15. Drusilla: gotta love somebody who's crazy
16. Oz: he's just Oz
17. The First Evil: ubervamps, going after slayers, the whole shebang
18. Cordelia: more comedic relief
19. Andrew: another example of human progression
20. The Mayor: pointed out many points to alot of characters

1) The First- The reason that slayers were made I.E most important character in my mind. Pretty much the source of all mythologies
2) Buffy- LEad character.
3) Xander- The person that keeps the hero going
4) Angel- First vampire with a soul
5) The Master- Gave way to the slayer line being split
6) Kendra- First slayer to appear due to the line split
7) Giles- "I sworn to protect this world even if it means doing things that others cannot" The Gift
8) Faith-Rogue slayer really shook things up
9)Spike-First vampire to willingly get his soul
10) Jonothan- The closest to a real life story that your going to get
11) Willow- Almost destroyed the world, proves how much someone can change over years. (But in my opinion the most overrated character in the Buffyverse)
12) Dawn- The friggin key, holds alot of importance in season 5 and that's about it
13) Wood- Only documented son of a slayer
14) The First slayer
15) Glory
16) Angelus/Darla/Dru/Spike
17) The Mayor
18) A.D.A.M and Maggie Walsh
19) Wesley
20)Andrew (had to put him on here somewhere)

15.Riley
16.Drucilia
17.Caleb
18.The Master
19.Glory
20.The Mayor

His absense in Seasons 4-7 was missed and even though he was only a part of the show about 1/3 through, he still deserves a spot in the top 5.

I agree that his character had an important impact on the show. But he was not missed during Seasons 4-7. In fact, his presence in Season 3 seemed irrevelant.

Just in case anyone was wondering Lady L was talking about Angel...mentioned in the first post of this thread.

BTW..where's your list?? Not being mocking or anything, I'd really like to see it, because I know you have very strong feelings on some of the characters 😀
