4. Twin Peaks (1990-1991, 2017)
The show which changed the game for TV and opened new possibities for what storytelling could be on the small screen and how cinematic it could be. Lynch and co also took classic forms of TV (the soap and the murder mystery) and turned them into something all the more weird, dark, and entertaining. The classic Whodoit in TV history had been "Who Shot JR? The Laura Palmer case left it in its wake. Over the course of two original seasons, a devisive film (much better than some give it credit for IMO), and a jaw dropping comeback miniseries, some of the greatest actors in history have taken part, and oh James Marshall!😉 But "James is cool right?"....😀 The comeback series left some scretching their heads, but then Lynch was never going to make Twin Peaks 2.0. Fair to say it was for hardcore Lynch fans and not for the causal fan.
3. Firefly (2001-2002)
Alongside My So-Called Life probably the greatest one season show in history. Its classic Whedon with a smooth blending of genres, a series of diverse and likable characters (with faults), played by a well matched ensemble cast. The theme of family at its core. Its a smart twist on the space opera, with a langague and style all of its own. For its limited budget its also pretty impressive visually and effects wise for an early 2000s network show. It has that quirky Whedon humour, but also has dark themes, moments of tension and emotional beauty. The melodic folk theme fits the show perfectly. A satasfying mix which could have become even greater with more seasons.
2. Angel (1999-2004)
Before Better Call Saul and after Fraiser, probably the orther great TV sequel series. Angel took the more upbeat coming of age quirky feel of Buffy, and added to it with a darker, noir detective feel in a more seedy location. It was the perfect project for its brooding lead star and gave strong story arcs for other Buffy players, plus a whole host of new characters. Doing just what you want from a spin-off series, adding to the universe, while still having core traits of its original. There were plenty of ups and downs, but most importantly it earnt its title as a worthy companion to its parent show. Speaking of which...
1. Buffy (1997-2003)
The pop culture icon gave new meaning to the term "Slayer" (no longer just a thrash metal band). An exciting, subversive twist of so many tired tropes, an eccetric bunch of characters including some of the coolist villains ever on TV, archored by one of the greatest single performances on TV ever. At its best some unique high concept episodes, blended with satisfying story arcs with perfect end of season peaks. Few shows in TV have so many emotional moments which still hit home all these years later. The comedy and pop culture references are on point too. Even the weaker episodes remain watchable because of the core cast of characters. When it wants to be it can also be dark and scary and isn't afraid to kill of key players or in the case of the two part pilot someone you think is going to be a key player😉. Buffy's biggest legency maybe that its quailty and place in pop culture transcends its now disgraced creator. Yes it was a team effort.
