Here's where I'm going to start getting into real trouble, but I don't mean to offend you browncoats. I love Joss. I love Nathan Fillion, et al. And I enjoyed Firefly. It's a little silly for my taste (as is Joss's wont), but I understand the love. It's just personally, and feel free to crucify, I feel like it worked better as a movie. I loved Serenity. The extra budget, and the feeling of "this is our last chance so we better make it count" that the film production seemed to have, raised the bar from where it had been set on TV. As a TV show I thought it often felt cheap and slight, but when those characters got onto the big screen it all came alive for me. Maybe I'm off, but I'm glad it got cancelled, because I'm glad we have Serenity.

What do you guys think? Are you glad it got cancelled because we were able to get Serenity? Or are you infuriated it got cancelled at all?
 
I think it could have gone on longer I would have liked to see more episodes. But I was more infuriated about Dollhouses cancellation. That could be because I watched Dollhouse from start to finish as it aired. Whereas with Firefly I just watched it this year.
 
I was infuriated the show was cancelled. I can see why he was glad though, It gave him Serenity...but really...had the show stayed on, I still think there would have been a pretty high chance of getting Serenity anyways.

Also, I agree about Dollhouse, I was just more infuriated about Firefly, with it's cliffhanger
 
Well, I do love Serenity. The bigger budget allowed for lots of things that the show probably wouldn't have been able to deliver, however I am very sad indeed that the show got cancelled.

It's because of "hurried" feel to the story in Serenity. The whole firefly story was going to take several seasons, and we'd have grown with the characters, become even more invested in them (if that is possible. Browncoats unite!) and been treated to a long, deep, rich story.

Think how bad it would have been if Buffy had been cancelled at the end of season one and all that followed had to be condensed into a 2 hour film. We'd have missed so much, and I feel that is the case with Firefly.

But I am very grateful that they wrapped the story up for us so we at least know what happpend and why, because it would have been horrible to never find out. And hey, River's two balletic fight scenes are two of my most treasured movie moments of all time.

You know, I understood his logic for Arrested Development, but Firefly is in an entire different class: its story was never complete. & I agree with an above poster who stated that we might have gotten a movie anyway.
 
At the time I didn't watch "Firefly", but I still thought it was rediculous that it got canned before a full season was over. I love the series and I wish there had been more episodes, so now I'm mad that it got cancelled so soon.
 
I'm annoyed that it got canned. Period.

I can imagine at least 1-2 more seasons worth of great plot before they HAD to address the situation from the film Serenity (finishing off River's issues and closing the loop on that plotline).

I love the movie Serenity, is in fact one of my favorites of all time...but I'm not glad Firefly got cancelled. Not one bit.
 
I agreed with Arrested Development until I learned that it was planned over 5 seasons. Now I am =(

This. My feelings exactly. There is so much more that they could have done with the show had they given it a chance. I mean take True Calling for example. It was cut off in the middle of s2. They could have at least given Firefly a chance to make a name for itself with a second season.

Exactamundo. Firefly Season 2 could have been legendary.
I am not glad. I wanted the series. I wanted Mal & Inara to get together. We would've seen it if there had been more seasons. Not just one lousy movie. I don't meant to say that the movie sucked. Just that the movie was the last resort. And It would've been better to have a lot more seasons. At least three full seasons!!!!

As much as I enjoyed "Firefly," once I finally got around to watching it, and as much as I like all of its other fans, regret its premature cancellation, I honestly believe that it shares one major trait with another gone but never forgotten cult classic. Like the original "Star Trek," "Firefly" ended before it ever got the chance to deteriorate in quality, something that all long term series eventually does. Every episode of "Firefly" was solid gold, with even a few platinums tossed in for good measure. If it HAD to end, I'm glad that it did it before it started getting bad.

Glory be! We actually agree on something!

I only watched Firefly a couple months ago. I had put off watching for a few reasons, one of them being the bemoaning of fans of a series that got more than almost any other fans every get: a blockbuster MOVIE after cancellation. That is incredible. I mean, Firefly didn't air in order and was cut a few eps in...AND IT GOT A MOVIE!

When I did watch Firefly, I loved it. It was everything everyone said it was. But I am quite happy for it to go into the annals of TV history as that great show. My experience of shows, and Whedon shows in particular, is the longer they go on, the less good they become.

I think the fans are much luckier to have a short show of impeccable quality, than a long running show that slowly but surely diminishes itself.

Now you need to watch "Star Trek," and we can argue about whether Spock actually loved Nurse Castle or Captain Kirk the most. (Personally, I'm a Spastle shipper, so if you want to take Spirk...

I know this is like blasphemous coming from a Firefly fan, but I didn't really like Serenity that much. Not when compared with the series which I thought was better in tone than the film. I'd have definitely preferred another couple of series' at least.

I didn't mind Serenity, but I don't want a sequel to it
 
Happy it got cancelled? Never. It took me more than one view to appriciate Serenity for what it is. Too different to the show and some deaths probably didn't help. Now I can see it in a different light and I like it a lot. Still the show is better and I wanted at least two full seasons. Maybe the show had gotten worse with time. That do happen a lot. And yes it's a quite fun being in the "They misstreated our awesome show and now we want everyone to watch it and agree with us" club. More than double the episodes had been nice to have though.
