I'll just post 5 shows you need to watch. It's what's the thread is for isn't it?
The West Wing - Politics is anything but boring. Or at least politicians. You're gonna love the characters and their chemistry. Instead of listing favourite characters I'd just make a short list of people I don't care that much for. But ok, my favourite is Josh. 😛 Once you're done watch Studio 60 on the sunset strip and after that give Sports night a chance.
Freaks and Geek - Freaks AND Geeks in high school in the early 80´s. Nothing much can honestly beat that. Sadly way too short. But still something that needs to be watched. In that sense the same as Firefly even if the shows are nothing alike. Once you've watched this move on to Undeclared. Same creator and you'll recognise a lot of people.
Veronica Mars - Cool, witty. blonde, young girl plays private detective while in school. Might sound like a teenshow but since the same can be said by Buffy it won't stop you. And it shouldn't.
The big bang theory - Nerds, geeks, nerds, geeks, nerd, geeks, a waitress, nerds, geeks and most of all Sheldon. Just watch it.
Glee - Not even finished with the first season but you can check up the first episodes before it comes back in spring. Wonderful music, funny characters and I've been told that it's easy to crush on Mr Schuester. 😉 And of course Jane Lynch. Might be off to a slow start but give it time and you should be a gleek in no time.
edit: And you should give Dexter a chance too if you haven't seen it.

And I told you Supernatural would get better didn't I? What more proof do you need that I have excellent taste? In tv-shows. 😉 Now watch the others I told you to watch.
