May December was a bit underwhelming personally, but a lot of those I would agree with. The Piano Teacher is one of my fave films of the past 20 years. Mysterious Skin is underrated and might Araki's best.

May December is tonally very different from the others in my list. The incidents in the film enters public consciousness via tabloid media and I believe the movie itself tries to mirror the shallowness and tackiness of a process like that. The "evil" characters are shallow narcissists, while people around the main "family" are somehow complicit in the crime by virtue of normalizing it, which evokes the theme of the "banality of evil" throughout. The film also makes the viewer complicit, suggesting that watching these kind of events from outside, as if they were just a story, can further victimize a person and worsen their life that is already scarred by trauma. The fact that the movie is a fictional adaptation of real events triggers cognitive dissonance and forces viewers to face how they engage with tragedy presented in the media. This approach can be expanded to explore the portrayal of suffering across multiple fronts relevant to our contemporary society. Because of all this, I find it to be an accomplishment in media criticism.
