Considering my last Dollhouse-themed thread isn't attracting posters, I'd like to try another topic: Topher.

What are your thoughts on him? Dislike him? Love him? Why? Has your view of him changed since the show started?

Personally, I'm on the fence when it comes to his character. I really was having a hard time standing him the first season. He talked down to the Dolls and his assistant, he was cocky - I was starting to think that Joss was purposely making him an unlikable character. Yet, lately, it seems as though I can identify with him. I can definitely see that there's something going on with him that he doesn't want people to know. I think there's more to him than meets the eye. I think he keeps people at a distance. I mean, I know that it was mentioned that the people that work for the Dollhouse can't really have personal relations due to the confidentiality of their work, but Topher doesn't seem to have any friends at all. Yet, the sexual tension he has with almost every female character on the show you could cut with a knife.

I'm really curious how he found out about the job at the Dollhouse in the first place. Do you think Adelle sought him out? It's obvious she thinks he's a genius, despite his way of being completely socially enept.

Thoughts?

Oh i LOVE topher ;o

He's one of my favorite characters.

I like his cocky-ness, and his 'big kid-ness'

I think he acts like a child , with all his 'toys' and his 'dolls'
he's a bit undeveloped ..

He doesn't really have a life, so no wonder he's attracted to any female that walk into the room...

Fran kranz says he is like Topher, with the nerdy-ness.

( i'm too tired to write any more just now as it's 2.18am and i have school in tha morning 😉

I love Topher.
I always love the nerdy ones though 😉 Everything he did made me laugh. He was just so full of himself and acted like a big geeky kid.

I really like Topher. He's my favorite, and I think Fran Kranz does him perfectly. He's witty and can be kind of an arrogant jerk at times, but there's also a soft side to him and a moral side as well. 🙂

I used to hate him because of his cockyness. But he grows on me since the last 2-3 episodes of season 1. You can see how sorry he felt on his face when Claire found out about herself being a doll.

Conclusion : Love him now

I love Topher 🙂

He's actually probably my favourite character in series 1, at least the first half.

I like him mostly because he brings some humor to the Dollhouse.

Also think that he somehow manage to be quite likeable even though he does some questionable things many times.

Will be fun to see his journey on the show, probably the character I'm most interested in.

It's true that he does seem to get the best lines...

The first time I watched the first season I wasn't that interested in him. I laughed at his funny lines and stuff but that was it. When I watched it a second time, he became my favourite character. My heart broke for him in Epitaph One.

He's definitely my favourite character, I can't wait to see more of him and I think season two is already showing us there is much, much more to him.

I wouldn't say that he's socially inept. Or if he is, he chooses to be. He's not comfortable around people. It's not that he doesn't know how to interact with him, he doesn't want to. He doesn't want to let anyone in and get to know the real Topher. It's easier for him to do his job if he keeps up the facade that he does.

And the fact he doesn't appear to have any friends makes him totally endearing to me, I just really feel for him.

He's my favorite character! I find his cockiness adorable, truth be told, and he always makes me laugh. Plus, there is obviously a deeper side to him. We get a bit of that in "Omega" with the way he interacts with Dr.Saunders/Whiskey. And there's a scene in Epitaph One (don't know if you've seen it) that just breaks my heart. The relationship between him and Adelle is totally my favorite.

I love him even more now after last night's episode. How he did not want to hurt Sierra but he couldn't NOT send her out. So he did the only thing he could do to save her life and even possibly his.

One of the best Jossverse characters eva.🙂
I'm glad he got to be the hero in the end, i've loved him from day one, even when people never liked him in the 1st season.

Agreed. Along with Wes, one of the best character arcs in the Whedonverse. Liked him from the start (love arrogant characters) and his ending was both heroic and tragic.
Always liked Topher.

Saw that I wrote earlier in this thread that it would be very interesting to see his journey on the show.
Must say that I'm very pleased with how it all turned out. Topher got a great story and he become more and more my favorite, especially in season 2.
