Touching Tribute/Blasphemous Desecration

What's old is new again.

With so much music being re-recorded and movies being remade, I was just wondering what everyone though of some of the results. Is there a piece of music, movie or TV show that has been redone that you think is a touching tribute, or even an improvement on the original? Is there something that has been made that is an affront to the original and an insult to the artists who did it first? Is there something you wish would be redone? Is there something you never want to see redone? Pick a question, and let us know!

Just to start it off:

Touching Tribute: Give A Little Bit, originally by Supertramp, redone by the Goo Goo Dolls.

Blasphemous Desecration: Beyonce (or someone who sounds like her) stealing everything but the vocal track from Stevie Wonder's Superstition. I was so appalled, I couldn't even listen long enough to get the name of the "song"...

What's that new one out from Gwen Stefani where she robs riffs from The Sound of Music Lonely Goater song? I don't know what to make of that one, but those bits sure stick in your head.
 
Touching Tribute: How Soon is Now (The Smiths) - covered by Richard Butler

Hmm. Can't Decide: There She Goes (The La's) - covered by Sixpence None the Richer. It's...nice, I guess? But they softened it and ripped a little bit of the soul out of the piece.

Blasphemous Desecration: These Boots Are Made for Walking (Nancy Sinatra) - covered by Jessica Simpson. Yes, the original is complete cheese. But now it's just lame, lame, stinky desecrated cheese.
 
Anybody that screws around with the genius of Pink Floyd deserves to die. I once heard the darkness singing Radiohead's Street Spirit. It's a very foreboding song, it has this almost maniacal hypnotic calm to it. They turned it into noise. They deserve much more than death.

Actually I've noticed a lot of bands sing Radiohead songs at their concerts. I've also noticed that a lot of bands suck.
 
blasphemous desecration - that terrible, terrible Thunderbirds live-action film...Commander Riker, how could you (sob), you pissed on my childhood...
I'm too upset now to even contemplate touching tributes but I'll try and come up with something when my hissy-fit is over 🙂

I've heard that Radiohead do a lot of Radiohead songs at their concerts...do the Pink Floyd wannabes suck also? Probably not as much as the Floyd themselves...to think I made it through Punk Rock and New Wave and all the kids nowadays want to hear is bloody Pink Floyd...plus ca change...eh? 🙂

That Pink Floyd have sold over 250 million albums is probably a marker to you that they suck. That they influenced so many other bands means they suck, too, huh?

I wouldn't call that "robbing". The Sound of Music is her favorite movie which is why she wanted to use it. lol

Just because millions of people like something doesn't mean that it's any good...Celebrity Big Brother car wreck at the moment is a case in point...not to mention any other "reality" show you care to mention. I guess I just don't like Pink Floyd but that's just my opinion...oh, but 'tis fun to be the wind-up-er rather than the wind-up-ee...I've never been a rebel though...blimey, I'm a civil servant 🙂 Serious Pink Floyd fans...they're funny...didya know if you play Dark Side of the Moon when you watch The Wizard of Oz...you really need to get a life 🙂

I appreciate the musical talents of Pink floyd. Complex songs with interesting themes. What did you appreciate about Punk Rock? That they could barely play their instruments?

The fashion? The political statements? That would be sarcasm, in case it goes over your head.

Music is art. You give praise to the best artists. The ones that are talented. Not the ones that make the most noise, because they have no talent and nothing to say.
 
Touching Tribute: Not really touching, but I'm kind of in love with Evanescence's cover of Thoughtless by Korn. It's neat. Sounds completely different.

Blasphmeous Desecration: A techno remix of Evanescence's 'Hello'. THE MOST DEPRESSING SONG ON FALLEN AND YOU ADD SYNTHESIZERS. My GOD. It's enough to make me wanna die.

70s punk is probably waaay overrated, elevated to legendary greatness. But it had a good effect on rock n roll, in general, IMO. Shaking up the bloated ROCK behemoth, chipping away at the pretense a little bit is good...even if the punks were kinda pretentious themselves...
 
As i'm Sure the Pointed one will agree, There was'nt any punk after the 70's.

anyone after who said they were punk after were misinforming you.

You beat me to it. The Evanescence version of Thoughtless is stunning.

It's not really a cover (as Korn are actually involved) but the new version of Freak on a Leash featuring Amy Lee is also inspired.

I have to say that I agree with this. There were some really amazing punk anthems to come out of the 70s (and many would argue that punk never actually left the 70s at all) but there was a lot of rubbish mixed in there too.

That said, the era and musical style did inspire many of the bands that are around today so it deserves to be recognised for that, at least.
 
Touching Tribute :

How soon is Now (The Smiths) by Love Spit Love.... it didn't make the song better but I like how they used the instruments to get different effects

L'Horloge, poem written by Baudelaire (1857), was sung by Mylène Farmer. The effect was great and the voice amazing to transcribe the feelings you have when you read the poem.

Blasphemous Desecration :

Libertine by Mylène Farmer sung by some random Austrian singer.... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

King of the Bongo & Je ne t'aime plus (Manu Chao) by Robbie Williams... I know he is trying to promote Manu Chao cause the guy's not really known in English speaking country, but I'm sorry his version's still just sh!te
