It's a long article so I will just post the link but it's an interesting story of how one man spent four years and 35 thousand dollars to track down the identity of an anonymous internet user who posted an inflammatory comment about him.

Very interesting. It doesn't sound like much will come of it because proving damages seems hard, but would be crazy if he won. Although, he obviously has time and money to throw at the case so who knows...

Really shows how people will say anything behind a screen that hides their identity.

And he (the poster) was in such a prestigious position. I don't know if proving damages would be that hard. Being called a child molester at election time had to affect it. Even if people laughed it off it still was out there.

But can people running for public office really sue for defamation? If so, couldn't pretty much all of them sue somebody? People are always saying things that are untrue about them.

Edit: I suppose calling someone a pedophile is more than what we usually see.

Well, it was that, but he also mentioned explicitly where the guy lived and how the view was out of his front window. So that added a sense of legitimacy to the comment.
