I couldn't decide on where to post this, but finally decided on here, because I'm more interested in the debates that can arise from the answers than the questions. In fact I'll give you the answers right off. The answers are debatable, so I don't think it's a quiz, because there are no correct answers. Well I don't know, maybe there are. I guess that would be the real question of this thread.

I heard these as actual answers to a trivia quiz on another board. I thought it was pretty fascinating.

Can you get Buffy dying at 5 times, Angel dying at 5 times, and Darla dying at 4.

I don't know the answer to this one, but who has died the most on either series?

If I was to ask you how many vampires with a soul there are in both series could you get 4?

Buffy first:

Buffy 1: Killed my the master in season 1
Buffy 2: Jumps of tower in season 5
Buffy 3: Goes to that 'hell' place in Anne?

No idea about the other 2!

Now Angel, this is hard because it depends what you class as 'died'. If it means the soul being destroyed I can get 5:

Angel 1: Killed by Darla
Angel 2: Perfect happiness, soul destroyed (btvs season 2)
Angel 3: Killed by Buffy (btvs season 2)
Angel 4: Angelus restored in Eternity (Ats season 1)
Angel 5: Angelus restored in Ats season 4

Darla (this one is easy):

Darla 1: Killed my the master
Darla 2: Killed by Angel
Darla 3: Killed by Drusilla
Darla 4: Kills herself

So I get Angel as dying the most.

Vampires with a soul: Angel, Spike, Darla (season 3, when connor is inside her) and I can't think of the 4th.

Buffy: Killed by the master
Died in Nightmare
Died in The Wish
Jumped off the Tower
This ones a stretch but in Normal Again, did other Buffy die? or just go comatose?
Cant think of a 5th at the moment though

Angel: Killed by Darla
Killed by Buffy
Died in The Wish
Killed by Dru in Buffys dream in Surprise
Cant think of anymore

Used to know who died most but cant remember. I'll get back to you.

Vampires with a soul: Angel
Spike
Darla (while pregnant (counting Connors here))
I'll get back to you on the last one

Point is, no one knows what happened at the end. Depends on personal opinion

Ok, so after some extensive research (well not really extensive) Ive come up with an answer to who died most. I get a tie between Willow, Angel and Buffy. And since it took me so long to work that out I'll show you my findings:

Buffy:
Killed by Master in Prophecy Girl
Died in Nightmares
Died in The Wish
Died in The Gift
(maybe, unsure) died in Normal Again

Angel:
Darla made him into a vamp
Buffy killed him in Becoming
Died in The Wish
Died in Buffy's dream in Surprise
Probably died in NFA

Willow:
Was a ghost in Halloween so dead
Died to become a vamp in The Wish
Died in The Wish as vamp
Died in Dopplegangland as vamp after being returned
Died in Restless in dream

Darla:
Master made her into a vamp
Angel killed her in Angel
Dru made her into a vamp
Killed herself

Spike:
Dru made him into a vamp
Died in Chosen
Possibly died in NFA

Xander:
Made into a vamp in THe Wish
Died in The Wish as vamp
Died in dream in Restless

Gunn:
Will have died in NFA
Gwen killed him in Ground State

Cordy:
Died in The Wish
Died in Youre Welcome

Anya:
Died in Chosen
Killed by Xander in possible future vision

Illyria:
Died before Shells
Maybe died in NFA

Fred:
Died in Shells

Wesley:
Died in NFA

Giles:
Died in dream in Restless

Doyle:
Died in Hero

Tara:
Died in Seeing Red

Harmony:
Vamped in Graduation Day

Lindsey:
Killed by Lorne in NFA

Lilah:
Killed by evil Cordy

Dru:
Vamped by Angel

Oz, Dawn, Riley, Lorne, Andrew, Connor and Faith have never died.

Others like Holland, Gavin, Holtz, Knox, Hamilton, Jenny, Master, jonathan, warren, Larry, Kendra and Joyce have died once.

Of the entire list heres my disputes:-

Buffy 3: Goes to that 'hell' place in Anne?

Travels to Hell, doesnt die to arrive. And we assume its Hell, its more then likely a just a nasty dimension.

Angel 2: Perfect happiness, soul destroyed (btvs season 2)

Angel 4: Angelus restored in Eternity (Ats season 1)
Angel 5: Angelus restored in Ats season 4

I don't think the ridence of the soul should count, especially in these cases.
2- Soul removed, not destroyed, otherwise Willow could not have gotten back.
4- The Soul was Surpressed not taken away.
5- The soul was removed and stored. Not buying this one.

Angel 3: Killed by Buffy (btvs season 2)

This one. Hmm, i would contest this one. Angel didn't die, he wasn't revived. He wasn't staked. He was stabbed by a sword and sent to Hell. We assume his death, yet a few eps later, he isn't brought back to life, he is sent to the Earth Dimension.

This ones a stretch but in Normal Again, did other Buffy die? or just go comatose?

Comatose. So does not equal death.

It can be argued that Angel didnt survive Not Fade Away. Odds are, he died.

No, i don't think it can be. There is no solid argument, just supposition.
Though that does not mean anything in Comic Book form is canon.
The comics are, to me, in the same league as FanFic(unless Joss himself decrees their authenticity or writes them himself).

The following (among others) I don't agree with on Wolf's list:

Buffy:
Killed by Master in Prophecy Girl
Died in The Wish
(maybe, unsure) died in Normal Again

Angel:
Died in The Wish
Died in Buffy's dream in Surprise

Giles:
Died in dream in Restless

Xander:
Made into a vamp in THe Wish
Died in The Wish as vamp
Died in dream in Restless

All of those just happened is dreams or alternate realities. In the 'real' world they did not die.

This all depends what 'to die' means. Soul removed from body? Heart stopped? Going to hell/heaven?

In a way the ONLY character to die is Fred, because her soul was completely destroyed. Every other character could be brought back (even Tara, wonder why Dark Willow didn't try that?).

Angel 1: Killed by Darla
Angel 2: Perfect happiness, soul destroyed (btvs season 2)
Angel 3: Killed by Buffy (btvs season 2)
Angel 4: Angelus restored in Eternity (Ats season 1)
Angel 5: Angelus restored in Ats season 4

Perfect happiness, soul destroyed? His soul wasn't destroyed, it was then restored. If it was to be restored, then, that doesn't count as being destroyed. Does it?

Buffy kinda died in Villains! The machine stooped beeping and went to that straight beep sound that happens when your heart stops!

What does death really mean in the Buffyverse anyway?

As mentioned, if Buffy died in Prophecy Girl, then didn't she also die in Villains, when she flatlined?

If you die from simply going to the hell dimension in Anne, then didn't Buffy die in Chosen as well, when she entered the Hellmouth?

They tell us becoming a vampire kills you. I'll assume that's because you lose your soul, so does that mean you die every time your soul takes a sabbatical, such as Angel's did in Awakening when that wizard (was it Wo-Pang) put his soul in a jar, or Innocence with the perfect happiness thing?

Can you die if you're already dead? Darla was already dead by Buffyverse definition as a vampire in the episode Angel, so did she die again when Angel slayed her?

If you die in an alternate reality does that count as a show death? Was the reality in The Wish an alternate reality, or was it our reality altered? Same question with Nightmare.

If you die in a dream does that qualify as a show death?

In general what is a show death in a genre series anyway? If I was to ask what television character has died the most in any TV series would it be Doctor Who? Do those transformation things count?

Oh and on the vampire with the soul thing. At the other site they were saying something about the sailor in Why We Fight possibly being one. They say he said something about getting part of Angel's soul, or something like that.

Yup - it would definitely be The Doctor - coming soon to American TV btw :)
I wasnt sure if she flatlined in villains. In my list I wasnt saying that I believe these all count, I was basically putting all possibilities in there, cos some people do count them.

I, myself, am not sure what really counts

That's an interesting one, cuz he did say he got a little part of Angel's soul, not enough to make him good, but enough to make blood taste like dust!

Those are all really good.... this is what I could come up with to possibly account for Buffy's fifth death ("Killed by the master, Died in Nightmare, Died in The Wish, Jumped off the Tower" sounds good for the first four)

As mentioned, Normal Again possible death

Buffy (almost) dying in "Villains" by Warren's bullet

If Angel losing his soul would count, Buffy (again, ALMOST) "died" (lost soul) in "Living Conditions"

In "I Will Remember You" the Oracles told Angel that Buffy would die "when these soldiers come", although technically she did anyway, this could be counted as her POSSIBLY dying in another reality

The Buffy(bot- at least) "died" eventually in season 6 (I think it was season 6 at least)

In "When She Was Bad" Buffy has a dream that Giles comes close to killing her

In "Dead Things" when the time-fight goes all wonky, I can't remember if Buffy gets stabbed or killed at any point then, but maybe?

In "Amends" Angel kills Buffy in their shared dream

I personally think the "Amends" one makes the most sense... the others are mostly just things that COULD have been included. Can't think of any for Angel other than those mentioned above (not sure about NFA, I'll start "dream-digging" again later 😉)

Angel didnt kill her in her dream in Amends. He bit her and she woke up. You never saw her die.

Now this is the kind of mindbending pointlessness I crave, lol. I don't know how many errors in logic I have here, but...

It seems like a vamp is not dead, precisely. It's undead, so we're told. So, is being vamped the same as being killed in the 'verse? The soul is removed and the body no longer needs oxygen. I've been told by some on these boards that the mind, and therefore the person, is still (at least partially) intact. The mind hasn't actually migrated with the soul to the ether. And the body continues to exist, such as it is.

If being vamped isn't true, meaningful death...then Darla, for example, died just twice"”each time at the point of a stake. Amazingly, it seems WR&H had access to a spell that could retrieve a soul and perfectly recreate a body and mind from scratch. Or, Darla's mind and soul were somehow reunited after she was dusted by Angel and the spell only had to recreate her body. Theoretically, Darla"”or any other dusted vamp"”could once again be revived as a human in this way. Unless the conditions are unreproduceable, can't remember...I assume Darla would still come back fatally ill, each time.

As far as the alternate reality of the Wish and Dopple...that reality must be, in fact, real. Otherwise how could Vamp Willow coexist with "our" Willow in "our" reality? Unless she were just some kind of manufactured, magical apparition or something...but we actually see Vamp Willow transported back to her reality. Seconds later, she's dust.

So, was that other being Willow? Or, just something very similar to Willow. Are those people in the other reality the same beings? Doesn't seem like it to me. If they are separate beings, I don't think they should count as character deaths.

But, if that other reality is in fact real, then Cordelia was actually transported to that reality, right? So, "our" Cordy did in fact literally die in that other reality. How is it that we see her alive again, back in "our reality"? Must've been an illusion...right? Or was it time travel? Destroying Anya's necklace in the alternate reality rewound "our reality" back to the moment just before Cordy's wish fulfillment...I dunno...

The vamp sailor's "part of a soul" idea just makes me think of Fred again. It suggests a Buffyverse soul could exist as fragments"”not just pure, whole existence or complete destruction. Could that have happened because...that's what happens everytime you're sired by an ensouled vamp?

What about when Willow was chopped in the back with the Axe by Warren in Villains, she falls over for a while before rising back up again?

Well, that's a good point. She appeared to have died, maybe for a few seconds. But she didn't stay that way for long. Was Willow not even human for awhile? A superhuman? I dunno.
