Troy

I just saw the movie today. Not too bad. My only qualm with the movie is the fact that I couldn't wrap my brain around a "this guy's good, this guy's bad" view of the characters. I don't like things that are clear cut, as far as good and evil go, so it wasn't a problem, per se. Just a bit thought provoking on my end.

He had certain censorship restrictions. If you look at passages like the bit where Patroclus follows Achilles out of the council tent, you can see how Homer has organized it in such a way that with a single flowery gesture as he tells the story it becomes instantly obvious what Achilles and Patroclus are all about. Very good point, n4h! Homer would have to tread carefully, since many nobles in Greece claimed to be descendants of Achilles, although homosexual behaviour was not stigmatized in the same way it is now.

The Troilus thing...could that be from Shakespeare's "Troilus and Cressida (?)". I've never seen or read that one...

And remember, Faiths5x5, Achilles was extremely good looking, and could probably have passed for a girl in his teens, which he was at the start of the Trojan War.
 
that's what i was wondering, i wasn't sure, i never really knew his age. i figured you would know. 😀 you're better than an encyclopeida. much funnier too.

i remember reading somewhere that the older soliders that trained the younger ones taught them a little more than the art of fighting and such, i'm not sure how true that is but....if i could remember where, i would say. but i suck at names. 🙁

overall it was an ok movie. it had some down points but it wasn't that bad. i got a discount, so it was worth what i paid...but i don't know if 10 bucks would be worth it. for me. i might just be very picky, which wouldn't surprise me. 🙂
 
Yeah, and when his father tried to marry him to Helen, he was a toddler...2or 3yrs old! Political marriages...geez.

And n4h, you nailed the cartoon thing right on! As an off topic aside, that's why no sane person wver the age of 4 can stand to watch Barney, the purple dinosaur for more than 10 nanoseconds without booting...no subtext at all, which makes it very contrived and cardboard. Amazing, really, how we send messages on so many levels...we may not even understand what we're sending or receiving, but we notice it anyway...
 
I went watching it last night and I loved it. I haven't read any of the books but I'd seen one of the old versions of the film, so I vaguely new what was going to happen. It wasn't a dissappointment for me because I had nothing really to compare it to.

I loved the touch of romance that was put in with Brad and Eric was excellent at playing Hector.

I'd definately go and watch it again!!
 
i thought it was really good except for that parts where they didn't follow the book!!!! like the whole "Paris/Helen" thing....Helen is supposed to hate Paris' guts!!! and the Trojan horse isn't even in the book! because it's not about the war at Troy, it's about Achilles' rage! and Agamemnon's death?! WHAT THE HECK!??!?!?! He can't get killed by some stupid little girl!!! AAAAHHH!!! same with Menelaus! he was supposed to die later! not right then! and they didn't make Paris the stupid little cocky pansy he's supposed to be....irritation.....oh, and btw, Patrocolus isn't supposed to be Achilles' cousin.....
 
All of these things that others have mentioned really irritated me aswell. But i think that I've discovered the key to appreciating this movie a little more. At first, I couldn't like it, i was so hing up on all of the inconsistensies that I just didn't give any attention to the things that the movie did well. But when I look at it as a story seperate from the Iliad, I can appreciate it more. There's a reason that they called it "Troy" instead, it's not the Iliad because it's not the same story... I think that to say it was inspired by the Iliad would be closer to reality than to say that it was based on the Iliad.

I think that while it wasn't the best movie ever, it accomplished it's goal of being interesting and entertaining. I liked the portrayal of some of the characters, and of coarse some of them were missing in action, but there are simply to many characters to give them all the screen time they deserve. I think that this movie told the story well enough to get the general gist without making it twelve hours long.

I think that I'll go see it again with this mentality.
 
true....when i think of it apart from the Illiad...which I was trying to do it's better...I just like the gods 🙂 It was my hobby for years, greek myths. not as much now, (I so need to read more) but....yea if you don't have the expectations, or if you take it as "Troy" and not an Illiad deal, then it is pretty good.

what about garfield, and tom and jerry? I still love those. I could be dense and miss the subtext there,,...but I was wondering....(and I'm a little slow too. 🙁)
