At the morgue, this week's victim, a young man named Jake Voight, asks for Tru's help. He's a soldier who left an army hospital after being wounded overseas. In his pocket, Tru finds a picture of a young woman.

During the repeat day, Tru find the army hospital that Jake was at. She pretends to be a nurse and talks to Jake. But after being told he could die at any moment, Jake runs off from the hospital and the military police are sent after him. He has something important he has to do before he dies.

Tru talks to a doctor about Jake's condition. The doctor explains that Jake was shot in the leg fighting in a war, and was sent back to the States to recover. Two weeks before, part of the bullet dislodged and went into his pulmonary artery. Surgery to remove the fragment is impossible since he began bleeding during surgery. If they try to remove it, he would die. It's just wait and see with Jake and if an embolism forms, he'll die immediately.

Another nurse comes in and Tru tries to avoid her, but is spotted and she knows Tru isn't a nurse. Tru makes an escape as the real nurse calls for security.

Tru goes back to the morgue and meets up with Luc. He's talking about getting directions to someplace, and Tru inquires about the directions.

In the next scene, Tru goes to a house in the suburbs and finds Jake sitting out front. He tells Tru that Bridget is gone and recognizes Tru from the hospital. They get to talking, and Jakes explains the whole situation.

Before Jake left for the war, he and Bridget (the woman in the photograph and who's old house he's at) were in love. Jake shipped out and received a telegram from Bridget telling him it was over. Now Jake can't remember what Bridget looked like from his injuries and wants to see her face again.

Jake realizes that Tru isn't a nurse, but thinks she's some sort of angel. Tru tries to help Jake find Bridget.

Jake ends up being taken back to at the hospital.

Tru finds out that Bridget is attending a college. She talks to one of her professors, trying to find out where she is, and giving her a fake story about Bridget's grandmother being injured. The professor says Bridget usually meets Phillip after class, so Tru assumes Phillip is Bridget's new boyfriend. The professor gives Tru another classroom to look for Bridget in.

Tru goes to the other building and finds out that it's the day care center and Phillip is Bridget's 1 year old son, who looks just like Jake.

Tru introduces herself as a friend of Jake's and that Jake is dying. But Bridget doesn't want to see him. She hasn't heard from him in 18 months and he doesn't know about the baby. She tells Tru that she tried to reach him but Jake was the one who didn't write back. Tru wants Bridget to go there and be with him when he dies. But Bridget doesn't want to loose him and Tru can't convince her to go see Jake.

Tru goes back to the hospital and talks with Jake.

Back at Bridget's house, she talks to her father about the situation. It was her dad who sent the telegram, not Bridget, because he didn't want her to ruin her future with some soldier instead of going to an Ivy league college.

Bridget takes Phillip to the hospital to see Jake. The two talk and Jake's heart monitor goes off. He has an embolism and dies.

Later Tru talks to Bridget. Tru is upset about not being able to save him. Bridget talks about how unfair it was only getting Jake back for such a short time, but is grateful for having at least some time with him before he died.

Back at the morgue, Tru talks to Davis on the phone about how her day was.

In this episode, Tru has to stop a tragic fire at a building at 5 pm. A fire in an apartment building threatens to kill a family and a firefighter (Nick) goes to rescue them, but ends up dying himself and is unable to save a young girl.

Tru tries to tell Harrison what is happening to her at dinner, but he's unconvinced. Later she sees her boyfriend, Professor Mark Evans, kissing one of his female students.

She thinks the cause of the fire is a gas leak, and gets a fireman named Nick to fix it.

Nick and Tru meet up later in the day at 2pm in a park for coffee. It's sort of a date. Tru asks Nick about how dangerous being a fireman is. He tells her that he like to help people and some times your job chooses you. Tru finds out that the gas leak was nothing serious and couldn't have caused the fire.

About a half an hour before the fire should happen, Tru goes to warn a family to get out of the building.

With about 20 minutes to go, Tru is at Nick's apartment and they're discussing the situation. Tru thinks the building's super might have set the fire to collect insurance money because she found suspicious things in his office. Nick questions how Tru knows the fire is going to happen. Nick and Tru are getting very close. They're about to kiss, but Tru can't. She tells him that he's about to die.

The case this week involves Andrew Webb, who's wife is involved with Tru's brother, Harrison. Andrew and Sarah are separated and both have drastically different stories about their marriage.

In the beginning of the episode, Harrison tells Tru he's found the love of his life, a woman named Sarah Miller, who's 27, and he's just recently met. Harrison thinks she's divorced. Harrison wants Tru to met Sarah. He's over at Sarah's place, and notices a bruise on her back. Harrison suspects Sarah's ex-husband, but Sarah says she's clumsy and fell while working out.

Harrison and Sarah go to Tru's apartment for brunch and tell her how they met.

Next, Lindsay and Tru are out shoe shopping, and Tru tells her all about Harrison being in love.

That night, Sarah's "ex" husband, Andrew Webb, is killed. His body is taken to the morgue and Tru has to prevent his death.

Tru starts investigating Andrew. She cons her way onto his boat, saying she's working on a book. Andrew mentions he's separated from his wife, but that they aren't divorced and he says he really wants to reconcile.

Tru then goes to Sarah and confronts her that she and Andrew aren't divorced and asks why Sarah lied to Harrison about being divorced. Sarah tells her she's divorced in her mind and Andrew just wants what he can't have. Tru asks Sarah if there's anyone who would want to hurt Andrew. Sarah tells about how abusive Andrew is.

Tru and Lindsay had plans (going shoe shopping), but Tru is late. She calls Lindsay on her cell phone.

Tru talks to Davis, trying to figure out how Andrew died. He can't give her any answers, but tells her you can learn how some died by either cutting them open or studying their lives.

Tru sneaks into Andrew's boat and snoops around. Andrew catches her and accuses Sarah of paying Tru to dig up dirt to use against him in the divorce. Andrew tells Tru that he can't divorce Sarah since she'll get half of his fortune. He says he never hit her and she married him for his money. She doesn't know who to believe.

At Sarah's house, Sarah is all upset, telling Harrison that Andrew threatened her because of him. Harrison suggests she gets a gun to protect herself and volunteers to help her get one.

Tru Calling Pilot Episode Summary

Note: All of this summary is subject to change. As with all pilots, there's usually a lot of tweaking that takes place, so it's all very preliminary. The original draft of pilot script was rather long (about 68 pages), which was trimmed down to 58 in another draft, so there are quite a few scenes that were cut. It's not known if the details & concepts from those scenes will be kept in the show. There's also probably going to be changes from the filmed, unaired pilot to when the pilot actually aired.

The role of Cameron is being removed from the show. It's not known yet how all of the scenes involving him will be changed.




The episode begins with a flashback of a memorial service for Elise Laura Davies, the mother of three kids Tru (12), Harrison (10), Meredith (15). Elise was murdered in front of Tru, and the murderer was never caught. Tru stands by her mom's coffin, and responds to her mom, like they're having a conversation. When she sits down, she then tells Meredith that her mom has forgiven her for not being able to help her. Tru says that she just wishes she could go back to that day and help her.

Flash forward 10 years. Tru is now 22, a college track star and now graduating from college (the fictious Hudson University in the filmed pilot, NYU in the original script). Described as "beautiful.... part Pink, part Avril Lavigne and part every girl you had a crush on in high school".

Tru is late for her college graduation ceremony. We're introduced to her as she runs down the fire escape of her apartment building since the elevator is broken.

Her best buddies Lindsay and Cameron are there at the graduation. Cameron is described as a "hipster geek perennially in love with Tru" and Lindsay is a "good time girl perennially in love with someone". She arrives just as they are calling her name, gets her diploma and notice her family isn't in the audience.

Next scene, Tru and her buddies are out at a bar. Tru is complaining about her family not showing up for her graduation, but she's not drinking since she has an internship that starts the following day.

Lindsay and Cam comment on Tru having on crush on Mark Evans (a professor) who comes into the bar. Tru denies it.

Then the next morning, Tru wakes up at her apartment and Mark is there. The two are involved. Mark wants them to go public with their relationship now that she's graduated, but there's still some sort of issues.

Tru gets a call from her brother, Harrison. He is in trouble after playing cards & gambling and needs money. But she refuses to loan him cash.

Tru shows up at a hospital where she's supposed to have an internship, but something happened and it fell through. She is told she will have to submit another proposal and a wait a couple years for funding.

Tru needs the job, since she's planning on going to medical school. The doctor gives her a lead to another job.

Tru talks to her older sister, Meredith, on her cell phone as she gets to the city morgue. This is the anniversary of their moms death and the three siblings are getting together. Meredith is a big-shot lawyer. Meredith receives a package, and inside is cocaine.

Tru goes into the morgue and talks to a guy named Davis about an entry level forensics attendant position. Tru's applying to medical school in the fall. She gets a tour of the place and finds out what goes out there. She gets offered the job. She starts that night at 11. Graveyard shift at the morgue.

Next scene in a restroom at a restaurant, Meredith and Tru are discussing the job. Tru find the drugs in Meredith's purse.

It cuts to them later on at the restaurant, discussing why Harrison isn't there and how their mom's death has messed all of them up. Meredith mentions that Tru watched helplessly as their mom was murdered and Tru pretends it never happened. The person responsible for their mother's murder was never caught. Tru calls Meredith on her drug use, which is a continuing problem. Meredith leaves.

Tru gets a call on her cellphone. It's Harrison. He's at the hospital after getting beat up for gambling debts or something and he's pissed at Tru for not helping before.

Next, Tru is back at the morgue, being shown some of the bodies there, including Rebecca Morgan, who's been shot in the back of the neck. The other person there leave, and Tru's all alone in the morgue.

Later on, she starts to hear a muffled voice.

Tru wakes up the next morning, and it's the previous day. Again. She's confused as her boyfriend (the professor guy, Mark) has the same conversation with her about their relationship) and the same events happen. Harrison calls again.

(These scenes were edited from the pilot) She's talking to her friend, Lindsay, at a coffee shop, asking her if she's ever had deja-vu. Lindsay asks if Tru needs to be at the hospital (for the internship Tru doesn't have) On tv is the lottery numbers, and Tru knows them from seeing the same thing at the hospital. (Lindsay works at the coffee shop) Tru rushes out of the coffee shop and sees the newspaper. It is the previous day. She calls the doctor about the internship, and helps the people that missed the bus on her way in to the hospital catch the bus this time.

Tru heads to the morgue, still confused about what's going on. She talks to Davis, who doesn't know who she is. She goes back into the "crypt", and Rebecca's body isn't there. Davis offers her the job, since she seems to know about morgue work.

Act 3 starts with Tru going to the bar where the dead woman, Rebecca, works as a bartender. It's the previous day, right before Tru had gone to the morgue, and right before Rebecca is murdered. Tru sits down at the bar, orders coffee, and tries to tell Rebecca she's going to die. Rebecca gets a phone call from her ex-boyfriend, Aaron, who's not getting that it's over.

Tru finally blurts out to Rebecca that she's going to die. Rebecca calls for the bouncer to kick Tru out of the bar. Tru scrambles, grabs Rebecca's cellphone, jots down the previous number dialed, sees folic acid vitamins in Rebecca's purse and leaves.

Tru finds out that Aaron works at a high school and goes to talk to him about Rebecca, pretending to work with Rebecca and tries to find out who might be wanting to hurt her. She finds out that Rebecca is also a dancer and that Aaron isn't the only ex who might have a grudge.

The scene switches to the office of Elliott Winters, a 30's something family man and questions him about Rebecca. Rebecca is his daughter's dance teacher and Elliott says there was nothing going on between them.

Tru calls Meredith on her cellphone on the elevator, setting up their dinner that evening. Tru's concerned about Meredith (re: the drugs). Meanwhile, Meredith is meeting with her drug dealer, passing him some money in a book.

Tru hangs up, starts to call Mark Evans (the professor she's secretly dating), then Elliott catches up with her and tells Tru to tell Rebecca that her threats aren't going to work and it's over. He says if Rebecca insists on telling his wife, he'll do everything in his power to stop her.

Tru's rather shaken, calls the bar where Rebecca works. She's already left. There's six hours left to prevent the murder.

The next scene is Harrison at a card game. Tru enters, and she and Harrison go outside to talk. She tells him to leave now. Harrison's taken out a loan, he thinks he's going to win big. She tries to explain about her weird day, telling him she's heard another voice. Harrison reassures her that she's not crazy but refuses to leave the card game. Tru tells him to just slow down while she figures out some way to save his ass.

Next Tru goes to back to the bar where Rebecca works and to another employee there, who's watching a baseball game. She tries to convince him to tell her where Rebecca is. He refuses, so she bets him $100 bucks that the Sox loose. If they do, he tells her where Rebecca is. The Sox do loose and Tru finds out that Rebecca is at Elliott's party.

Next, Tru goes to a private party at a museum being held by Elliott, but can't get in.

She calls Evans. He's at a faculty banquet. He wants to know about what they talked about that morning (going public with their relationship and her moving in with him). She tells him she hasn't thought about it and then she has to go. She sees Rebecca.

(This scene was edited from the pilot) At the faculty banquet, it's revealed that Evans' ex-wife is the dean of the university.

Tru finds Rebecca at the party, tries to convince her not to do it (expose her affair with Elliott to Elliott's wife), but is caught by the guards and told to leave. She gets Rebecca to come with her. She tells Rebecca the whole story, and they talk about Elliott. Tru starts to worry it might be Aaron who's going to kill Rebecca. But she has to go help Harrison first.

Tru goes back to Harrison's card game. Harrison has just lost all the money he was loaned. She discovers the guys that Harrison is playing with are cheating, and that all he needs is a certain card for a Royal Flush to win from talking to him at the hospital. While finding a deck of cards like the ones that Harrison is playing with, she calls Davis (Cameron in the unaired, original pilot) and gets info the possible murder weapon and how Rebecca was murdered, (small calibur handgun, at close range)

Tru then shows up at Meredith's office, right as Meredith is about to receive the envelope with the cocaine. Meredith denies it and tells Tru she can't fix people. But Tru had taken the packet of coke out of the envelope before Meredith got it.

Tru goes to the card game, takes Harrison outside, gives him the card he needs to win and that the waitress is telling the others playing what cards he has, so it's only cheating since they're cheating.

The next scene is at Rebecca's apartment. Tru and Rebecca are talking, Aaron shows up. Tru figured out he's there to kill Rebecca.

Aaron has a gun. he claims it's just for protection. He starts loosing it, revealing that Rebecca is pregnant by Elliott. The situation is really messed up.

Back at Harrison's card game, the waitress tries to read his cards. He stops her, then realizes he has a royal flush.

Aaron points the gun at Tru. He wants to know who she really is. Tru kicks the gun out of his hand, there's a struggle for it. Tru gets it, points it at Aaron, and he runs out of there.

She tells Rebecca to call the police and figures its all over. But it's only 9:05 and Rebecca was supposed to have been killed at 10.

Tru thinks she's prevented Rebecca from being killed and goes on to dinner with Meredith and Harrison. But it didn't quite work as Tru had hoped, and Meredith is snorting coke in the restraurant's restroom.

Davis calls (Cameron in the original pilot), and tells her why there might not have been an exit wound. It might have been the exit wound in the neck, and the assumption from the other morgue worker was wrong. Rebecca might have committed suicide and it would have been a self-inflicted wound.

Tru runs to Rebecca's apartment. Five minutes to go. She races up the fire escape, and into Rebecca's apartment.

She sees Rebecca with Aaron's gun, about to kill herself. Tru talks her out of it, telling her about her mother being murdered.

Back to the morgue. It's Tru's first day again. She's anxious to see if the body there is Rebecca. It's not, but it's another woman who has died.

Five bodies arrive at the morgue - all guys at a bachelor party at a hotel.

At Meredith's office, one of her bosses comes in to tell her the law firm is instituting random drug testing. She's nervous, since she has been using.

The day repeats.

Tru starts investigating the 5 men. They were at a bachelor party at the Hotel Piermont for John Brockett, but she doesn't know their names. She doesn't even know if John was one of the victims or not.

Tru warns Meredith about the drug testing and tells her to make sure she's staying clean.

Tru tries to get John to cancel his bachelor's party at the hotel. He thinks his finance, Robin Wilson, sent Tru to ruin their fun. John tells Tru that his finance doesn't like John's friends, who are all his old college buddies.

Tru tells him she's with the hotel and starts asking questions. John is suspicious. Tru tries to tell them the room they have reserved has water damage, but John is adamant about having his bachelor party at the hotel.

Tru has to find another plan. At the morgue, she asks Davis about the drug Avocardyl, claiming she's studying for her med school exams. The drug is a poison found in common chemical products, that water soluble and odorless. Tru asks if it can be detected if someone has been slipped this poison. Davis tells her it can, picking up on Tru accidentally saying "victim".

As with all bachelor parties, there's a stripper. Tru tries to make sure the stripper who's supposed to be at John's party (Tara) is elsewhere and tries to hire her. But that doesn't work.

Tru gets into the hotel suite, pretending to be bartender (but she has no clue how to mix drinks). She's gotten rid of the alcohol that was there and replaced it, in case it was poisoned. There's 6 guys at the party (5 of whom end up dead). The best man, Ethan, arrives late.

Tru continues to serve drinks, as she observes all of the potential suspects/victims at the party, eavesdropping as they discuss their issues. One of the guys, Blake, starts getting suspicious of Tru being there.

But then the stripper, Tara, comes in. There's an awkward exchange between Tara and Tru in the bathroom.

Meanwhile, Harrison is investigating John's finance, Robin, who works at a clothing store. He flirts with another clerk and finds out where Robin has gone.

Back at the party, Ethan doesn't look too good. Tru offers him a drink and finds out he's a recovering alcoholic. She knows that Ethan is one of the guys who dies. He didn't have any alcohol in his system, but did have the poison.

Tru keeps track of the suspects on a napkin, crossing off their descriptions as she eliminates them. She starts to suspect maybe the club soda is poisoned, since Ethan only was drinking that. She calls Davis on her cellphone, asking him if the carbonation in the club soda might speed up the affect of the poison.

Tru goes out on the balcony and chats up Ethan about John, trying to find out any of his "issues". They're interrupted by Blake, who wants Ethan to go back in for a lap dance.

Meanwhile at Meredith's office, she's mildly surprised when Tru's warning comes true and she does have to undergo a random drug test.

Tru intercepts Ethan at the bathroom and starts prodding as to why Blake interrupted them and what exactly is the big secret that happened to the guys in college. She gets him to crack and reveal that something happened to a girl.

They're interrupted again, and Tru sees that Blake is missing from the party. She goes to look for him and he corners her in the hallway, pulling the napkin out of her pocket. Blake checked with the hotel and found out they hadn't sent a bartender. Tru claims she's a journalist working on a story, but then there's a scream from the room. The stripper, Tara, is completely freaked out and telling them to keep their hands off of her.

Blake threatens to call security and Tru has to leave.

Tru goes back to the morgue and gets yelled at by Davis. He knows she hasn't been studying for her med school exams and isn't be honest with him. Tru wants to explain what's going on, but there isn't time.

Tru heads back to the hotel. She tells Blake she thinks one of the guys is willing to do anything to cover up what happened in college. Blake totally flips out, questioning her told her. Just then Harrison calls Tru and tells her that he's found Robin. There is no wedding. It was called off months before.

She realizes the murderer isn't Blake. It has to be whoever planned the bachelor party. She theorizes that John killed the girl and is trying to cover it up. She gets Blake to help her stop John. Tru and John go into the hotel room and confront John and the others, telling them the wedding has been called off and that they need to deal with what happened.

John goes off into another hotel room, Tru follows and continues to confront him about what's happened. She notices his drink doesn't have ice in it and realizes the poison was in the ice. She tells him she put crushed ice in all the drinks, so if he did poison it, he'll need the antidote. John goes pale.

The police are called and John is lead out of the hotel in handcuffs.

Blake explains that he wrote to John several weeks ago and said he was going to go to the police because of the guilt. She tells Tru about what happened to the girl (she split her head open on glass coffee table while John was attempting to assault her).

Tru goes back to the morgue and talks to Gardez.

A young, second year medical student, Paige Reynolds, shows up in the morgue with track marks on her arm.

Tru has a date with a guy named Jeremy at a restaurant.

It's also the day Tru has to take her MCATs (the Medical College Admission Test), which is the exam you take to get into medical school.

During the repeat, Tru poses as Harvard medical student Jessica Sanders, to hang out with Paige and her med school friends- Dan and Steven.

She goes to one of their class and watches them. She sees track marks on Dan's arm. She introduces herself (as Jessica) and says she's a new student and wants to hang out with them. She offers to buy them lunch. Steven and Dan say they're busy. Tru asks them what they're so busy doing, by they says it's none of her business.

Paige and Tru sit at a booth, discussing relationships and Dan and Steven. Paige says she's between relationships. Tru says Paige needs a break, since she's pushing herself so hard. Paige says that's the way thing is for med students. Tru nearly blows her cover, but catches herself.

Tru turns the conversation to Paige's friends. and says that she shouldn't have to hurt herself to keep up with the other students. Paige wonders what Tru is talking about, but they're interrupted by Paige's cell phone ringing. She tells someone she'll be right there and has to leave.

Tru blurts out that she knows about the drugs, which Paige denies. Tru tries to prove she's right by grabbing Paige's arm and looking for track marks. But there aren't any. Paige thinks Tru is crazy, tells her to keep away from her and leaves.

Tru follows Paige from a distance to an abandoned building. Inside it's empty. She goes down the basement and hears a electronic humming noise. She follows the noise until she finds a room with medical equipment. She sees Steven strapped to a table with IVs in his arm. Paige and Dan are there, in surgical gear, are watching monitors. The heart monitor shows that Steven has flatlined.

Dan and Paige monitor Steven's condition, telling him death looks good on him. He convulses. After 20 seconds, they try to revive him with electronic paddles. They have to repeatively shock him. Finally the heart monitor shows that Steven has a pulse. Steven regains consciousness and tells the other that it was a real trip.

Tru walks in and asks what's going on.

Back on campus, they explain that they kill themselves as a hobby, because to be able to remember things. They're lives flash before their eyes by releasing chemicals in their brains.

Tru tells them that they're experiment kills them. But they insist it works. Steven says he remembers his father, who left him when he was 2 1/2. Paige wants to be next. Tru tries to stop her.

Luc (the crime scene photographer) and Tru are talking on the phone and Tru apologizes for something that happened earlier. Tru has to go - Iit's 2:30 and it's about time for Paige's "death".

Tru sees Steven and tries to catch up to him. She tries to convince Steven to talk Paige out of it. Tru admits to Steven that she knows Paige is going to die. He wants to know how she knows. Tru makes a last ditch effort to convince him to help her, and finds out that Paige is doing it right now. Tru might be too late to stop Paige from dying.

Lindsay's at the restaurant and tells Tru she'll cover for her on the date. Jeremy is there sitting alone. Lindsay tells him Tru can't make it. Jeremy says Lindsay is too good to be "Tru". They start to hit it off.

Tru goes to her medical school entrance exam trying to reschedule, but it's too late. She'll have to wait to take it next year.

Tru finds out that Paige made it through her flatlining experience, but she's remembered things. Tru goes and confronts Dan about where Paige is. Dan says she remembered about a man hurting her, and something about the moon and stars.

Tru goes to Paige's house and across the street she spots a stained glass window with the night sky. She realizes that it's the moon and stars.

Inside the house, the neighbor is having an argument with Paige. The neighbor abused Paige when she was 9, and now Paige remembers exactly what happens and wants to press charges. The neighbor tries to get her to settle down, and she yells at him not to touch her. They start pushing and shoving. Paige slaps him. He grabs her. He's about to push her down the stairs when Tru arrives on the scene.

Paige and Tru talks about the situation on the front porch of Paige's house. Paige finds out who Tru really is. They hug and Paige tells Tru she's going to make a hell of a doctor.

Back at the norgue, Tru is on the phone with Lindsay discussing the MCATs. Tru tells her they didn't happen and finds out that Lindsay's stole Jeremy away from her. Lindsay insists that there's a guy out there for Tru.

Two 17 year old high school students, Adam Whitman and Jen die in a car crash. Tru finds out about it when she has to go pickup the bodies.

During the repeat, Tru goes to the private high school they attend, saying her family is thinking of moving to the area so she's checking out the school for the day. She meets up with students there - one of the victims, Adam, and his girlfriend, Amy. Tru assumed that Jen was Adam's girlfriend.

They head to the cafeteria where Adam questions Tru about where she's from. Tru spots the other victim, Jen, working the cash register. Jen and Adam avoid eye contact. Tru asks about Jen, and Adam explains she's one of the students on a scholarship that rich kids like him don't associate with.

Tru goes out for a drink with Luc, but has to rush off to a spot where the high schoolers are racing cars. She finds one of Adam's friends and he points out where he last saw Jen.

On an industrial tower, Tru spots Amy and Jen kissing. Those two are involved, not Jen and Adam. Adam also sees them, and questions what's going on. Tru tries to calm Adam down. Jen is worried everyone's now going to find out about them. Amy and Jen decide to leave town, and go to pack. Amy tells Jen she'll pick her up in a half hour. Tru tries to console Adam, telling her about when her boyfriend cheated on her, but Adam tells her this is different.

Lindsay meets with a guy named Gregory and gives him a portfolio. It looks like Harrison gets her a job.

At Jen's house, Jen is quickly packing. She gets a call from Amy who says she's on her way. Her brother, Derek, questions where she's going and who she said "I love you" too.

Adam shows up at Jen's house to pick her up instead of Amy. He wants to talk to her.

Tru drives to Jen's house is Harrison's car (that barely runs). She meets up with Jen's brother who's pissed off about Jen going off with Adam. Tru goes in Derek's car to go after Jen and Adam.

Adam is a maniac driver. He interrogates Jen about her relationship with Amy, as he keeps going faster and faster. Adam ends up parking the car near where Tru picked up Adam and Jen's bodies. He realizes that Amy and Jen are happy together. Just then, Derek's car plows into Adam's car.

Eliza Dushku finds her Tru Calling by saving the world, one person at a time

Actress Eliza Dushku made a big splash in the Buffy universe by playing bad-girl-turned-good-Slayer Faith. Now she'll star in her own series about a young woman who can hear a dead person's pleas for help and relive a day to save them. Tru Calling premieres on Fox Thursday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m.

Dushku's claim to fame may be her recurring role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, but she also has a solid background in film. She began her film career with That Night, and has gone on to star in Bring It On, Soul Survivor, True Lies and City by the Sea with Robert De Niro. Her most recent film was Wrong Turn, which came out last spring.

Dushku chatted with Science Fiction Weekly about playing a young woman who talks to dead people, saying goodbye to Buffy and getting domestic.


What attracted you to Tru Calling?

Dushku: The whole package. I'd never wanted to do television because of the long commitment. Having done film, after two, three months I could go back to school if I wanted to or do whatever. But a series commitment seemed like forever. As Buffy was ending, I was looking at life and about how maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing to have a consistent job. On top of that, everyone involved with the project was just so amazing. The creator, Jon Feldman ... really put together a cool premise and a great character.


And Tru Davies is an interesting character. She's quite different from Buffy's Faith.

Dushku: Yeah. Tru is something new for me and also for television. I can't think of a lot of characters that are like her that are out there on television right now. And it's an interesting age, too, because the teenage thing has been done and the 30-year-old woman thing has been done. Twenty-two is a cool age to explore, because everyone goes through there.


Tell me about Tru Calling.

Dushku: It's about a girl who is just trying to get by. She has her own family and personal issues, as any other girl on the street would, but she's for the most part just a normal girl. She doesn't have any super powers and she's not really a wild child. She graduates from college, and she wants to go to medical school. Of course, her internship falls through, and her advisor tells her that there's this one other job that she might not jibe with, but she should check out. She shows up and it's the graveyard shift of the city morgue. For me, it felt real, the way it was written, in that here's a girl like me or any one of my friends, who goes up to the morgue and goes, "You've got to be joking. I can't handle this. It is insane." But she really doesn't have other options, so she goes for it.

Within her first night there she hears voices, and she starts to snoop around the morgue and is looking at the bodies and discovers they have a way of communicating with her. I think we'll figure out as the show goes on how much is supernatural and how much is her sixth sense. Basically, her day jumps back to the beginning, and she wakes up in bed and has the power to relive the day and possibly save people. I think, as the show goes on, it will turn into something where it's "What if this could happen? What if?" And now, is she supposed to play God and decide who is supposed to live and who is supposed to die? What is that, anyway? I think there are a lot of different directions it could go.


What is special about the character of Tru?

Dushku: I like that once she finds out that she has this ability or this gift or curse, what have you ... it's going to seem like both at times. Of course, everyone would want to believe and assume that if that would ever happen to them they would do the right thing and be noble and go out there and save the world. And yet at the same time she's going, "Why me? Why am I supposed to do this? I want to do this, but I'm also trying to get by on my normal life, and my family's got their problems, and I've got my problems."

I think it's similar to the theme of Buffy, which is this normal girl who's got enough on her plate just dealing with life and coping with growing up and being a young woman, and then all of a sudden she's got the weight of the world on her shoulders in terms of everyone else. It just a struggle, and how she's going to react. She's not always going to be able to save people. She's going to mess up and not always do the right thing. But watching her unravel that in her brain with her personality [will be the interesting part].


What is going to be the biggest challenge in doing this series?

Dushku: I think she's definitely a strong character, but I think that she's a little more apprehensive and a little more guarded and careful than Faith.


She's certainly not as cocky and doesn't have the confidence level.

Dushku: Yeah. Well, you could call it confidence, or you could call Faith's cockiness 100 percent insecurity [laughs]. I think that they're just different. People have different ways of coping with fear, and I think that's ultimately what it's about. And so here she is. I think it will be difficult to balance that mixture of being a problem solver and really going for it and being bold with her actions, and yet kind of doubting herself at the same time and wondering what's this all about. It's hard enough to figure out little decisions on a daily basis when you're 22, and now you're dealing with someone else's life and someone else's fate and someone else's life-or-death situation. I think she's constantly going to be doubting herself and figuring out what's right and what's wrong.


Are you a little bit nervous about getting into your own series, with its 16-hour days on a full-time basis?

Dushku: It's almost like my friends. They go to college, and they get their summers off, and they get to run around and travel. And then, after college, you get to a certain age where it's like "OK. Well, now I need to start my career, or now I need to do something that's a little bit more full-time." Because that's the world we live in. You have to work [laughs]. So I think that's one of the things that actually appealed to me, is the consistency. I love traveling, but at the same time, to do it in films, you never know where you're going to be. You're here one minute, gone the next. It's hard to hook up with your family, and it's hard to do other things. So I think it will be nice to be in one place and have a home. I just bought a puppy. So I'm looking to be a little bit domestic if this is to go for a few years.


What do you think will make Tru Calling stand out from the rest of the pack in the fall?

Dushku: I think that a lot of the shows centered around girls. Buffy has ended and Dark Angel had a good run. But I think that there are so many stories still to be told about young women. And, obviously, young women make up a pretty large part of our society, and people want to see it, want to explore it. So there will always be an interest there, an attraction there. Because I think that girls learn a lot from watching these characters, and that's why it's important that they are portrayed as real as possible, because girls are learning from the characters they watch. Their triumphs and their mistakes. It's almost a form of therapy for some people.


Are you worried about the competition? You have a tough timeslot against Friends and Survivor.

Dushku: No, in terms of this business, a long time ago I got over the whole competitive thing. I mean, I'm not going to say that there haven't been times when maybe I lusted after a role and it didn't come to fruition. But I definitely feel like there are such a small percentage of actors who get the opportunity to have something tangible and even as big as a guest-starring role on a show. I mean, how can I feel anything other than lucky? The competition is not really coming into it. Everything happens for a reason, you know. If the show finds an audience, then that's fantastic. And if not, then we try something else. We're going to dive in and just go for it.

I have confidence in the story and I have confidence that people will be able to relate to the characters. Because if people can relate to me, and people have related to characters that I've played in the past, I think that this one has a lot that we do with it. As long as I can get out with the essence of the character, then people hopefully will be interested and intrigued.

The pilot had a lot going on, and there's so many different things that they jammed into one show. I think that with this show it's something that you really feel out. It's not like a movie, where you make the movie over two months and then it's over. They cut it together. This is a living and breathing thing. It's every week. So there are going to be shows that are great, and there are going to be shows that are not, and I think the writers learn from what works and what doesn't. You never really know until you're there on the day, or you see the final show. I think it's a work in progress, and I like that. I like that as much as I don't have 100 percent creative approval or say, I think that a lot of things about me will come out in the character as we go. Art imitates life, and I feel that the show will just grow as I do, and as the audience does. I'm excited. I really am.


It looks like a really good cast for this series, too.

Dushku:I think that Zach Galifianakis [Davis] is really funny. And I think the brother-and-sister dynamics are realistic and cool.


Regarding Buffy, how do you sum up your thoughts on the series? You spent a lot of time on that show.

Dushku:I've obviously been asked many times. Not to sound redundant, I have nothing but praise for the show and for the cast and for Joss Whedon and everyone involved. I think they're truly, truly some of the finest, smartest, most creative people to put a show on television. I think it will be remembered forever. The show is a phenomenon. It's not often you have a show. I mean the diversity of the fans, from 70-year-old ladies in Alabama to people in Russia and every continent on the planet. It just shook me out. But it also didn't shock me, because all the components were there. All the variables put together this awesome equation, and it worked. It was always smart, and it was always dead-on, and the people were good.


Did it surprise you where the series ended up, considering where Faith started out?

Dushku:Yeah. Even when I was going to go back for the last five shows, I'd come from Angel and I asked Joss, "I feel like Faith is much softer, but I don't feel like pumping her up with toughness that isn't organic is the right way to go. I mean, you tell me." And he said, "No." The same kind of thing. "Art imitates life, and Faith's been in the clink, and she's possibly learned a thing or two. She got to mellow out. She was there trying to find redemption. So she grows and you grow. And so we play it real." And I loved how the show ended.

I remember getting the last script and, of course, everyone's thinking how is Joss going to do this? How is he to take a show [with] so much weight and cap it off in an hour? How do you do that? What's he going to do? And by the time I turned the last page of the script, I just remember thinking, "Oh, that's how you do it." You distribute the power to every girl and every potential Slayer and every Slayer wannabe out there. I just thought it was so beautiful and so perfect in terms of the times and what's been happening in the world. It's been a really emotional time for everyone. I thought it was amazing.


It must have been special being a part of that last show, considering how much time you spent on the show.

Dushku: Yeah, yeah. I mean, being a part of everyone on the last shot was pretty great.


Is there a chance we might see you on Angel this year?

Dushku: You never know. David Boreanaz is my brother from another mother. He's my boy. We have so much fun, and I'd work with David again and again and again. He's great. I love acting with him from a personal and professional standpoint. And that's what's the most important to me. You've got to love the people you come in contact with when at work, or else it's fun for no one and you just want to get the hell out of there. I love when it feels like it's not work and when you're hanging out with people you respect and can goof around with and trust.


Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Dushku:I wonder if I said anything really profound [laughs]. If so, then that's great. If not, then hopefully the Buffy fans will still want to hear the words that come out of my mouth [laughs].
