Forgive what might seem to be a dumb question, but since ours may be one of the 6 households in the free world to not have HBO, I was just wondering if anyone could give me some information about the general details of the show. From the clips available at their website, I get the feeling that there is some kind of tongue in cheek dig at the vampire tradition in general, and that their existence is pretty well known and accepted, at least in the one small community ("Have y'all got any o' that low fat vegetable based blood?") Is that pretty accurate? I may buy the series if it ever comes out on disc, and I would like to know a little bot about it before I finally decide.

The book series is collectively called The Southern Vampire Mysteries.
The author is known for mystery writing. Basically the books are who-done-its with a vampire and general supernatural backdrop.

I wouldn't say tongue-in-cheek so much as a new interpretation and demystification of traditional vampire lore.
It is more of an American take on vampires rather than the transfer of the European take transplanted to America (like Rice's books do).

Everyone I know that's read the books HATES the HBO show, but everyone I know who watches the show & NOT read the books LOVES the show.

I also don't do "pay TV"... but I am big into NetFlix DVD shows, so as soon as it's available on DVD, I'll be watching.

I've read the books and love the show. You don't know me so your polling isn't skewed it seems.
I like it. It's laugh out loud funny at times, the characters are interesting and it's just that little bit different.

What I don't like, and I think is a bit worrying as it's kinda the main plot, is Sookie and Bill's relationship. I'm Bangel so I should really love it but it seems to have taken melodramatic to new levels. Bill is such a romance novel vamp that it is off putting. I find the real interesting stories are what's going on with Jason and Tara.

Watched the first three eps. Bill seems to be the vampire form of Mr. Darcy. Name even could be a diminuitive of Fitzwilliam. ;)
I have just watched it.

Must say that I really like the way it looks.
And the song during the opening credits is great, almost makes it worth watching for that alone 🙂

But do southerns really talk like that? It sounds exaggerated to me, but I wouldn't know...

They DO talk like that in Louisiana.

In agreement about the song

Without seeing anything but the trailers for this particular show, I can't really say in this particular instance, but accents are almost always exaggerated in movies and tv. They get away with it because only a relatively small part of the audience is aware of the mistake.

In other words, "Naw, Hunnybyn, us ol' southern boys and gals wudn' never tawk li kat, caws it ud be jest plum silly. You come on down hyeah 'n you kin see fer yo'se'f. We tawk jest like they do everwhur else."

LMAO.....oh, I don't know....I could probably find a couple of people around here that really do talk li kat!
"Bill, you were just lickin' blood outta my head; I don't thank it gits more personal an'at."

Heh.

I watched some youtubes... it's fairly good, from what I viewed.... but NOT as good as Buffy/Angel. ~sigh~ .... I guess nothing will ever be THAT good again. 🙁

Sweet trailer.. but after HBO axed Carnivale and Deadwood I boycotted them.. I cant go back now.. argh.. resist.. resist..

But I did notice something comical. The last line "I'm a waitress" considering the one series that brought us here was going to be (if I remember correctly) Buffy the Immortal Waitress.

Actually its a fox. =D I think its crazy cool looking!
I've just started reading these books, and I'm excited to watch the show now. Hopefully it'll come out on disc.

The show, and the book series, are pretty tongue-in-cheek. The books are known for blending drama, comedy, horror, etc...in fact reading the books reminds me strongly of Buffy in style. The show doesn't take itself too seriously either a lot of the time.

I started reading the books after seeing a few episodes of the show. I like both. And I'm addicted to the books now.

I'm really liking the show. I absolutely adore the opening credits just as I loved the opening credits for Six Feet Under, Alan Ball shows have great credits. I just think there fun and different. The song is AMAZING its my ringtone right now. Other than the credits being amazing I also really love the show. I kind of have a huge crush on Sam I dunno why but he is just soo cute and I agree with you Kean on not loving Bill and Sookie I am a Sam and Sookie shipper myself although I dunno Sam looks like he might be up to some mischeif that never stopped me from crushin' on anyone though (Spike and Sylar for instance) I just can't wait to see more the story is getting more and more compelling and I gurantee it will be out on DVD so don't worry WA and Buffanator you will be able to see it and I think you'll enjoy it!

Bad Things karma...I downloaded the song yesterday lol
Okay so I have HBO and I have seen every episode thus far and I have to say that I love it. The Bangel in me loves the Sookie/Bill relationship. I will say that I have not read the books but I am not so into mystery novels so I am okay with it.
And BTW I was sooooooooo excited that they finally had sex. It was like yes, we have arrived and I liked that he bit her. My man was like, "that was too far" but I would let Bill bite me anytime. I am just saying

True Blood is awesome. When i watched the 1st episode i was like "uhmmm... it's ok".. but now i'm totally loving it! 😀

Im a Sookie/Bill fan.. BUT i have to agree with "your man" X) that WAS too far... it's just my opinion 🙂

I was really hesistant to give this a try but Kean insisted it was worth it so I've watched it, so far seen every episode except the last one that aired.... I don't love it, but its entertaining enough I guess... I'm still trying to make my mind up about it fully. I kinda watched most of the first 6 back to back so its not like I had a week in between to stew over the episodes... The last couple of eps got my attention due to a major thing that happened that really ripped at my heart strings (I'd specify but damnit, I can't figure out the spoiler tag thing 🙁 Sure you can guess what i'm referring to if you've seen it though) I am not a fan of the Sookie/ Bill relationship as of now, its just not really drawing me in... its probably due in large to the fact I really don't find Bill at all attractive. But also I just find their interactions kinda cheesy and rushed and they seem just too opposite to attract, not the vamp/human thing, just their personalities... I dunno, maybe in time i'll change my mind. I do love Jason, I just want to cuddle him up and protect him, and Tara cracks me up. And Sam...tsk, tsk... there is just something not right at all about you mister!

Their accents, laughably exaggerated. And man, this show really can get almost too gory to stomach sometimes huh? The credits, I maybe one of the only ones on here that is just not a fan, AT ALL! The song used is perfectly fine i guess, but the visuals, hell no! disturbing, disgusting and vile, ESPECIALLY the fox thing, I'm actually appalled they even put that in there, even if its fake... which I'm not sure it is.

So yeah, like I said mixed feelings... but chances are I'll stick it out cause its just a thing with me and watching shows, once I start I feel the need to finish.

Agreement about the unappealingness of Sookie/Bill and the very appealingness of Jason:D
