True Blood vs. Buffyverse

Does anybody watch HBO's True Blood. Let me first say I LOVE THAT SHOW! Anyway what do you guys think about the comparison between Buffy vampires and the vampire on True Blood? I'm kind of on the fence about the whole concept of vampires being public, but even Joss has kind of jumped on that band wagon, but I believe the first to introduce vampires being out in the open was the Anita Blake series.

I personally like the powers of the True Blood vampires, they seem more prevalent in the HBO show than on Buffy, as vampire powers on Buffy were pretty inconsistant. One moment they're moving superfast like Angelus did in killing Jenny Calendar or when Penn moved at the superspeed in the police station in the episode "Somnambulist," on Angel. Which is something we've never seen done on either show since. Also the high jumping of vampires, the strength, etc. Also one think I like about True Blood that I always kind of thought should have been true for the Buffyverse is a human no matter how trained cannot easily take out a vampire, let alone a group of them, as Gunn and even Wesley have done by themselves on plenty occasions. I don't really like the whole coffin thing or that vampires fall apart like a water balloon once murdered but I think True Blood has a pretty solid mythology.
 
I prefer Whedon's version the best, but I agree that the speed thing isn't very consistent. Of course, if all vampires could move that fast all of the time, there never would be any possible way that Buffy could fight them. As for the "True Blood" series, I have found a web site that has it (there are probably several, I haven't really looked until lately), and I've watched a couple of episodes so far. It's okay, but it hasn't grabbed me the way that Buffy did.
 
I think, since True Blood is on HBO, it's almost not a fair comparison, simply because True Blood has more leeway to be edgy. The vampires can be really really evil and really really sexy (Eric Northman . . . swoon), and the writers don't have to hold back with that at all.

I like the way the vampires die, too. It's gross.

I just saw the first episode where a vamp gets staked today, and I had to try very hard not to vomit.
The two are so different.

True Blood Vampires dont have any demonic appearance, they have certain powers, blood is life to everyone, they dont become possessed by a demon.

BTVS Vampires dont really have any powers except for the increased streangth and somewaht speed, they have a demonic appearance, they lose their soul after they are turned and are truly monsters..

Its just to hard to compare the two. Basically apples and oranges.

I love the idea of the vampires-gone-public. Though it's been said that Hamilton brought us a similar vision in her Anita Blake series. But the synthetic blood, the drainers, the vampires ability to "glamour" ( even though I think the use of the word glamour is a bit hokey) I found entertaining. I love the fact that it's set in the deep south, and their accents as well as their names are stellar. Sookie and Bill. Enough said. I find it to be a bit much that when they become all "fangy", theres always a soft clicking sound when their fangs emerge. IMO I think they could've done without that. The books that the series was based off of are an excellent read as well!
I wouldn't compare BTVS against True Blood because I love both series for different reasons.

I agree, the shows are quite different from one another.
 
Well I'm not so much asking for a comparison of the shows but more so the difference in the vampire mythology. For example, somebody said if all vampires in the Buffyverse moved as fast as in the True Bloodverse, Buffy wouldn't be able to keep up with them, however that shouldn't be true because Buffy's powers are based on that of a vampire, and if a slayer is trained enough her powers exceed that of a vampire, as Angel made mention when he said that she was stronger than he was. Also Penn moved fast like they do in True Blood during Season 1 of Angel, but that was like the ONLY time you saw a vampire move that quick.
 
I have just started watching the show and love it. True Blood has a very cool premise with the idea of the vampires trying to integrate into society and treated as equals to humans. And then there's the added layer/conflict of them experiencing discrimination and violence. Very interesting. The show is serious but with just the right amount of camp. I love it.
 
I love True Blood! I agree with most of the people here, I don't really think the shows can be compared because Alan Ball can incorporate almost anything he wants into the show because it airs on HBO.

It is the best thing on TV right now - you should tune in if you aren't already 🙂
 
I'm at episode 11 now and this show is amazing but I don't see the comparison Buffy except that it has the supernatural and it mentions Buffy once.
