"True Love" (Spoiler For Issue 16)

(Quote from Issue #16 A:ATF page 1) Angel: "We spend most of our lives trying to find our one true love. I found mine. It was impossible. IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN. But I found mine. Now he's gone. My son is dead."

This isn't a Bangel vs Cangel vs Nangel vs any other "--ngel" discussion as much as it is the question of whether or not Ol' Broody, by his own admission, ever loved ANYBODY before he became a father. So, what do you think?

Describing Connor as his true love doesn't mean that he never loved before Connor but he found a whole new dept of emotion that I don't think he could have comprehended beforehand, much like any other parent. The love for your children and the love for a lover or friend is totally different but all are powerful. Angel loved before Connor: he was in love with Buffy, he loved his friends, he loved his sister when he was mortal. Connor opened his eyes to a new level of love but not to love itself.

I agree that he has loved other people in the past, and no doubt will love others in the future. I just wonder why refer to Connor as his "ONE TRUE love," since that implies that he has never lived anyone "truly," however you choose to interpret that, before.

I think, personally, that it's just a case of the writers screwing up for the sake of a dramatic moment, without regard to the character's established personality and past.

I think it was just to emphasis the importance of Connor in his life. He is everything to Angel and his greatest achievement.

Exactly! Connor was the closest thing Angel's ever had that could be viewed as a piece of his redemption. Singing, dancing and dating aside, Angel was not allowed to have his relationship with Buffy (because of his curse) and he wasn't allowed to have children (because he's a vamp). In Connor he got someone to love and a child.

It's like an uber-extreme version of the standard "parents wanting better for their children." Because with Angel, part of that was humanity, Connor was the human that Angel can never be.

I think it's a little hard for most of us to grasp (myself included) since Connor was such a horrible son in S4. No one but Angel really understood it back then.

Also, it just occurred to me that, as far as Angel knew at that moment, Connor WAS the only person that he loved. Cordy, Wes, Fred, and even Darla were dead. As far as he knew at that moment, he would never be able to see Buffy again, since they were literally worlds, or more accurately DIMENSIONS. apart and weren't apt to ever see one another again. I guess, "My one true love," could have meant "My last remaining love." That would work better, but it wouldn't have sounded as dramatic.
