Turns out S8 isn't terrible at all

When the season 8 first came out I followed the discussions here, but had little desire to read the comics themselves. I have never read a comic in my life, and to be honest the things that I read about here at the boards seemed so "out there" and I just couldn't imagine the Buffyverse that way. I didn't want to be disappointed by season 8 (and don't have the patience to wait for each new issue). I decided Season 8 wasn't for me.

I haven't been on a Buffy kick in far too long. It's amazing how it comes back with a vengeance! Of course I own all the boxed DVD sets, but all seasons are freely available with Amazon Prime--how convenient...all Buffy episodes in one place! I watched a few favorites before noticing that season 8 is actually available to WATCH as a motion comic. It only goes up to issue 19 but each episode only costs .99. They're short and the voices honestly sound nothing like the characters, but it was exactly what I needed to get me into the swing of season 8. After watching "The Long Way Home" (#1-4) I downloaded all 40 issues. I'm about to start #30(Retreat part 5) and I'm pretty darned excited. Sure, some of the arcs give me a funny "meh" feeling, but I am pleasantly surprised by the dialogue and the plots seem to be getting better and better. I have to admit-the way character interaction is presented in comic book form sometimes confuses the heck out of me. Luckily, the motion comic gave me a general idea on how to read and follow the general plot.

I have so much to say about what I've seen so far, but that will have to wait until another time. If anyone is interested in the Season 8 motion comic, here is a [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Buffy-Season-8-Trailer/dp/B003WI7O56/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1347310872&sr=1-1&keywords=buffy+season+8"]Amazon.com: Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 8, Episode 0 "Buffy Season 8 Trailer": Movies & TV@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51iz470BWHL.@@AMEPARAM@@51iz470BWHL[/ame]

So nice to see someone who gave the comics a chance, even after deciding the comics were bad based on the online discussions. So many don't. I mean, let's face it, Buffy and Angel had lots of plot points that when described sounds silly, but Joss and the others made it believeable. Same with the comics.

I will give the motion comic a chance, but I don't think I'll like it. I've already read the comics, so I don't need to see a interpretation of it (done by someone who hasn't been involved with the comics) anytime soon.

Btw, I hope you didn't miss the one shots, also available on darkhorse's digital site.

I've read a few of the S8 comics. The reviews were terrible, so I steered clear for a long time, but I finished a re-watch of the series not too long ago and was itching for more Buffy, so I picked up the first volume of the new library editions. I actually really enjoyed it. I loved Angel: After the Fall, and S8, so far, has been just fine.

Don't get me wrong, it's not mind-blowing or anything, but I'm liking it. It ends with the "No Future for You" storyline, and while that one was kind of average (I don't really need another "is Faith evil?" story. That's been done, many times), I'm looking forward to the next edition getting released later this month.

I haven't read the comics but I watched the motion comic and liked it a lot! I think the further along you get into the season the weirder it gets though... I kept reading the summaries of the comics after I was finished with the motion comic and some of the stuff that happens towards the end of Season 8 was just crazy to me. LOL But I don't understand why Season 8 gets so much hate.

If I were you, I'd refer from making such statements without reading the entire season. Just saying. Personally, I think that season 8 is basically "Where The Wild Things Are" the season. No really, the main plot line is identical.

I really liked season 8. There are parts I didn't like, most of which I will refrain from mentioning because you're not there yet. 🙂 But parts I loved: The Chain, Wolves At The Gate arc, Buffy & Fray!!! (I'm a huge Fray fan) There are aspects about season 8 that I liked even more than season 9.

I also liked most of the IDW Angel series (even beyond ATF).

I've read the comics and loved them but I didn't know about the motion comic, thank you! I think I'm going to get them right now. But if you find these comics confusing wait till you get to the Angel: After the Fall series!

I quite enjoyed reading season 8. Towards the end, things got really... weird, but I really enjoyed reading them nonetheless. I loved the sense of humor that it had, so even though sometimes the storyline was a little awkward, the sense of humor redeemed it. (Take what's going on with Buffy and Angel at the end -- it was bizarre and didn't seem to fit in the plot, but I literally could not stop laughing after reading just the title of the issue. You know what I'm talking about.)

But yeah, enjoyed season 8. I think that Angel & Faith in Season 9 is a superior series, but Season 8 was still quite enjoyable.

I actually think that season 8 did some things better than season 9 is doing. In particular, the typically-Buffy punning & humor, as well as the pop culture references. Season 9 is practically devoid of the latter.
