The first Turok-Han nearly killed Buffy. But in the finale the humans like Giles and Xander were able to defeat them easily. Why is this?? I remember before someone mentioned Joss wanted to show their strength of the Scooby gang and slayers in the finale.

I can't believe this question isn't already in the oft-asked questions threads, because it's asked all the time. Oh well, let's remedy that. Let's make this one the reference thread of all reference threads on the Turok Han and link it. :bite-cha:

First of all there's a quote we need if it truly exists. I don't have the Season 7 DVD but I heard a claim there's some commentary in it somewhere by somebody who says the reason the later Turok Han are less formidable than the first Uber Vamp (I call him Ubie) was simply because they are. It was convenient.

OK so here's what we know about Ubes from the text.

GILES
As Neanderthals are to human beings, the Turok-Han are to vampires—ferociously powerful killing machines, as single-minded as animals.

GILES
They are the vampires that vampires fear.

BUFFY/FIRST
To be honest, I'm getting a little tired of subtle. I think it's about time we brought some authority to our presence. Now, Spike, wanna see what a real vampire looks like?

DAWN
(from the stairs) Turok-Han?

BUFFY
(doesn't acknowledge Dawn, pacing) So when I kicked its ass, the whole Firsty circus decided to back off for a while.

ANYA
And so we know that a battle is coming. Ubervamps galore. We also know that the Ubervamps are hard to kill...

ANDREW
(writing in red) Hard...to...kill.

ANYA
But I have been out talking to some of my old contacts, and they've provided some surprising bits of news. Yay for them! (Andrew draws a picture of an Ubervamp) Uh...OK. For example, Ubervamps can be staked... right through the heart. Zing—poof. (Andrew writes "steak" then crosses it out and writes "stake" beside it) Just like regular vamps. Um...we didn't know this. (Andrew draws a red arrow from the word "stake" to the torso of his Ubervamp drawing) Of course, these guys have incredibly strong sternums, so it's a lot like driving a wooden stake through solid steel. But you guys are all super-strong, right?

KENNEDY
(scoffs) Um...no.

ANYA
Right. OK. Um... but still, heart information, still good to know since holy water seems to run off these guys like they've been scotch-guarded. And, well, sunlight would work, but guess what— they're not coming out during the daytime. (Andrew flips to a clean sheet of paper and draws a yellow smiling sun) Uh, also, beware of their, uh, teeth and the claws they use to shred flesh. (Anya holds up her hand, fingers spread, like she's clawing and shredding with her hand; Andrew writes "teeth, claws")

Whether the official explanation is "It is, because it is", or not, we fans do like to fanwank the question. Here are some of the theories which have been posted over the years.

* Anya's lecture in the basement suggests new information has come out about the Turok Han, and it is possible to train to kill them.

* The first Turok Han caught them by surprise. Since that time they've seen the Ubes can be killed, and their confidence has increased. A variation of that is Buffy was off her game when she met the first Ube.

* Ubie was special. A variation of that is it required vampire blood, a ritual, and a special knife to call him from the seal. Ritualistic symbols were carved into Spikes flesh. The idea is special power was called into ube. Or...the first Ube was simply given a power burst by the First Evil.

* The First Turok Han had fed, and was stronger. The ones in the cave were starved.

Dawn and Xander were having a hard time killing them tho, the thing that saved them was the sunlight thanks to Dawnie.
