TV Guides View On Angel Series Finale

So there I was enjoying my morning cup of coffee and I check out TV Guide.com to see what's on tonight.
There is an article about the 7 worst series finale because of the ending of the Sopranos and the writer had this to say about Angel:

Joss Whedon does like to play with our minds (we still haven’t forgiven him for what he did to Wash in Serenity), but we expected more from him when he wrapped up his “vampire with a soul” storyline. Angel and the crew went down swinging, but considering we didn’t see the end of the fight, we’re still left wondering who lived and who died.


Normally I would have sent the writer of the article an email about what more do you want from a series finale that had what about 2 months to put together but I thought why waste my time. Afterall the writer is a critic for the famed TV Gudie.com
 
lol, that was the point, though, to keep people thinking and guessing. we all got that, how come everyone else can't?
 
what a load of [insert bad, inappropriate for BB word here]! :silly: ok, maybe thats an exaggeration a little, but seriously! angel finale= unique, dramatic, good, and as lyri said, leaves you thinking and guessing! ive seen season finales that did not wrap the show quite as well as this one did!
 
Clearly the guy totally missed the point. But to be fair, he probably didnt even watch it.

I have noticed that in TV guides, newspapers etc, that the critics make so many mistakes (especially with cast and characters names, mixing them up and just getting them wrong) that there is no way they could have even watched what theyre reviewing.

I think they just get the summary and go from there. It is ridiculous. My family is so sick of me reading these things and shouting at them all the mistakes 🙂

So I wouldnt pay much attention. even if he did watch that particular episode, I doubt he watched any others.

Also, the other thing that bothers me about these things, the people reviewing them are never (or rarely) the people that the TV show or movie is aimed at. Ive seen so many reviews of teen movies reviewed by middle aged men saying what a pile of crap it is. Of course theyd think that. they arent 14 year old girls! Grrrr!

Well, I can't say I really disagree. To me, "Not Fade Away" is in no way a series finale. It's a season finale. I know that no one had much time to wrap up the threads, but still. I just consider it to be the season finale of season five, and that the show simply wasn't renewed. So in that since, it made for a sucky finale. Even though I did like the episode.

I would expect more from a guy (joss) that is considered by some to be a brilliant person and can do no wrong.
Hey, he came up with his company logo in like 10 minutes didn't he? That wasn't much time.

Yeah, the point was they rid themselves from the corrupting influence of W&H, returned to the streets, and went out fighting. It wasn't about who lived and who died.

Besides, say Joss had added another 5 minutes to show the actual fight with some twist of course so that Angel and his buddies make it and then have a big group hug type of moment to cap the series off... Better or just lame? (I vote lame).
 
Ignore him I say. He isn't worth the time. I understood that right away, he apparently didn't give it much thought
 
When I first watched the finale I was pretty dissapointed but I have really come to appreciate the ending over the years, for example it helped to ease the pain of Wesley dying (for me) because they were all going to die pretty soon anyway, at least that's how I interpreted the ending.
There was no chance in hell they'd survive, they army of Wolfram & Hart was just so huge, the Seinor Partners even didn't try to hide the demons from our world. Angel, Spike & Illyria (let's face it, Gunn was badly hurt already and he was a human) may be powerful, but they're no slayers.
Still, I wouldn't be upset if those characters eventually showed up in Buffy season 8 comics, I just need to know how exactly they escaped/won.
 
I have mixed views on the series finale. On the one hand, it was unique, original, dramatic and suitably poignant. On the other, it left a whole range of questions unanswered and seemed an abrupt end to a complex story. A sixth season would definitely have been a more favourable alternative. I think there was still plenty of unexplored territory for the writers to tackle. I suppose my heartfelt feeling is that "Angel" ended before its' time.
 
I loved it more than the Buffy finale. And it did feel a little rushed but Joss was expecting another season. And when he didn't get that, he had to wrap everything up in a few episodes and definetly (ms) this one.

I'm glad it didn't show the ending! It gives Joss and writers that worked on the show the freedom to make more comics and possibly movies.

In Dawn's own words: "What's gonna be wrong with that?"
 
I don't think the final battle scene was as hopeless as some people think.

First, it was hard to tell how many demons were there, I think I only counted about a dozen though I assume they represented a lot more - but I think Angel, Spike, Illyria and Gunn together could probably handle at least 30 generic demons together. 40 if Conner shows up. Give or take, and given some luck.

Second, Angel could have prepared for them with a trap, explosives or other modern weapons - it wouldn't be too hard to machine gun the whole lot down in that narrow alley. Remember the episode where everyone is after baby Conner and Angel uses an explosive (C-4 I think) to take them all out in some abandoned mine? - that could work pretty well in the alley too.

Third, the cavalry could still show up. Buffy's slayer armies maybe, or perhaps Loren rounded up a bunch of friendly demons to join the fight? Hell, Willow alone might be able to wipe out the whole army of demons if she works up some dark mojo.

Fourth, they still had the option to just run away, though I agree that's unlikely, but perhaps they were sucked off against their will to some other dimension or some such the way that sometimes happens in these shows.

In any case, it's not over until it's over and Angel and his friends spent the whole series making it out of bad situations so I don't see this final battle as dramatically different. Just par for the course.

I'm in the same boat. I actually enjoyed the Angel finale more than Buffy's but I felt like Buffy's finale was built up better. It makes me wonder what would have happened if the season would have progressed as originally intended, rather than having to alter plans to properly end the series.

I think it's great that people feel so strongly one way or another about this episode. People seem to either completely hate it or totally love it. At least it keeps people talking.

I think the main reason some people don't like it is because it doesn't really provide closure for the series, but that's the reason I like it. In my head the story can continue. To each his (or her) own.
