What a load of bollocks, ive got to fork out 180 quid(EVERY YEAR too, not just this time) for a friggin TV licence and for WHAT? The pathetic BBC or RTE! theyve even got bloody adverts on these channels were im at, and STILL gotta pay. What a joke. Am i right in thinking that most countries dont need a silly licence coz their TVs stations are all paid by advertising? And even in n america BBC is FREE? we pay licences and other countries get if FREE? omg, why o why do we actually pay this, its time for the *piss off you aint taking our money* revolution here, i am really annoyed at all this. unbelievable. :bite-cha::bite-cha::fighting1:thought:

We pay licence for 2 channels and some radio. The rest is our own choice that we pay extra for. Ok, we have one free channel that are sponsored by commercials. Many people aren´t happy about the licence but most people are paying it all the same. Mostly young people tries to get away with not paying.
 
Um . . . we pay for cable. Though we have to pay more for more channels and a whole lot for those that don't have commercials (like HBO, Showtime, etc.). Is that what you mean?

Plus the fact that everything's about to go HD, and if you DON'T have cable, you'll need a converter just to recieve the signal.
For some reason i was under the impression that most countries dont have to pay a licence for basic tv, but if they want extras they have to pay.
Like over here, we have to pay a licence, just for the right to actually possess a TV set. If we want cable we also have to pay for that. I dont mind paying for cable, but a licence..... NO. And the worst thing is, we only pay a licence for ONE tv company. If this company went away we would still have tv but no licences.
 
Technically we should have a licence for every television in the house that recieves channels. I don't think anyone does that though. I know that if you just have RTà‰ 1, 2 and TnaG (not sure about TV3 and Channel 6) it's free. The rest is cable or foreign channels so they have to be paid for.

See thing is, its not even the money i care about, it the fact i pretty much dont watch RTE, and when i was in Scotland i never watched BBC. They should be forced to go down the road of advertising to raise fund for themselves. It would be so funny if everyone in Ireland just didnt pay, like, what could they do about it? take everyones tv away? send everyone fines?
 
Three reasons why the British TV licence is great value for money...Doctor Who, Life on Mars and Bleak House alone are worth the licence fee...actually I could make it three hundred reasons without breaking sweat. When you have the best TV service in the world in the BBC, bar none, it has to be worth a couple of quid a week. Jeez, I pay a lot more on top of that for cable and, apart from the odd programme here and there, none of the other channels come close.

Pretty much everyone doesn't pay. That's why they always have those ads about the "consequences" of not paying the license. It's a bit like the legal drinking age. Everyone knows it's 18 but very few bars and clubs uphold it. I was 20 before I was asked for I.D. Laws don't always take well here.

Oh and Blondie, Ireland, at least the Republic, isn't part of the U.K either, it's a state on to itself.

im totally with you on this.... it take the frinking cahooney! i get almost she-hulk over this.... especially with the olympics coverage bolix and we paid for them to go there and argh

I'm not a big sports fan...I follow West Ham ferchrissake 😉...but I thought the Beeb's Olympic coverage was excellent. Unlike bloody Wimbledon which they totally cocked up as far as this tennis-loathing Pointy is concerned🙂 Plus I just watched Jimmy Page play Whole Lotta Love for the first time in years...shame it was Leona singing and not Robert 😉

I find having to pay the TV licence extremely annoying. I don't actually watch TV a lot these days but I have to have a licence to own my TV which I use mostly for watching DVDs.
 
We here in Germany have this stupid license too (called GEZ-Gebühren here - if I'm right, it's somewhere around 15 € a month). While we only pay for the public TV & radio stations (who may only show commercials in a limited time slot between 5 and 8 PM - the commercial-financed private stations are license-free), there is this idiotic policy that every TV set is regarded as potentially showing the public stations, so in the end, everyone is obliged to pay the license.

The most ridiculous thing is, while the GEZ does have the right to enforce payment, they don't have the right to check on your flat/house if you have a TV set or not; it's not like they ever get a warrant for that. So, lots of people here just never notify the GEZ of their TV set in the first place.

I'm lucky insofar as that as a welfare pensioner, I'm relieved from payment anyway - so I checked in with GEZ (yeah, I'm a wuss and don't like to "go illegal" with anything) but don't have to cough up the money anyway.
 
Is there kindly someone who knows about American TV that can explain this for me?
I'm thinking perhaps it might be like if PBS MADE us pledge money....is that it?
And how much IS 180 Squid?

In this country we pay the TV licence for the BBC - which is run with our money. But then it's not as simple as that because you then are required to have a licence even if you own something like a video recorder because it can pick up a TV signal. And even if you're blind you have to pay for it (although at a reduced price). And if you buy a new TV you have to give your address and stuff so they know you own one. It's a hoot and a half, I can tell ye! :lol2:

180 euros is about $225-250 approx
