So other than the usual Buffy and the spin-off Angel....

Do you watch a spin-off show if you liked the main one?
Do you like them more or less than the main show?
What spin-off shows do you watch?
Do you like it when the main show characters do cameos or a few episodes of the spin-off?

Personally yes definitely, I watched The Vampire Diaries then The Originals spin-off, then the spin-off from that I'm watching, Legacies. Also just started NCIS New Orleans the spin-off from NCIS.
The Originals I liked more than The Vampire Diaries. I'll let you know about NCIS New Orleans once I've watched the whole of season 1.
I love it when the older show characters turn up in the new spin-off shows. Makes me all nostalgic for the original shows and I connect more with the new show. It helps with making the new show make more sense too, like it ties up loose ends and follows the main storylines to a point. Love it 🥰
 
In short, yes.

NCIS: New Orleans is a personal favorite. I have 6 of the 7 seasons on DVD. It gets better and better every season. And I find it much more enjoyable than the original.

CSI: New York has a very strong cast, as well, and I actually liked it better than both CSI and CSI:Miami.

Law&Order is a staple, but SVU is iconic. The fact that Mariska Hartigay has played Olivia Benson for 23 years is mind-boggling and it continues to be relevant, 23 seasons later. I try to follow Organized Crime, but it's a serialized show and hard to keep up with.

The whole Arrowverse, I kind of view as a franchise, but I do enjoy the cross-overs. I quit watching Arrow around season 4, and The Flash in season 2, but I love Batwoman. And have enjoyed the nostalgia trip of Superman&Lois.

I thoroughly enjoyed Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, led by Gary Sinise (CSI:NY) and Alana de la Garza (Law&Order), and was so sad it only got 2 seasons. However, I loved that one of the characters (Matt Simmons played by Daniel Kennel) moved over to Criminal Minds, and we got to continue adventures with him.

Torchwood was just as clever as Doctor Who in the first 2 seasons. It lost me when they began killing off all the main characters, and we were left with just Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper. Class wasn't what I expected it to be, but it was a fun ride, and I have the DVD (found it at the dollar store a year or so ago).

Stargate: Atlantis was a phenomenal spin-off of Stargate: SG-1. The core team of characters, and the plot lines, were super interesting. I loved how they took the Atlantis myth and turned it into a Stargate story--with a whole new galaxy and enemies to combat! I still have a slight crush on Major John Sheppard.

Depends on what the storyline is - if Bloodlines had been picked up (the backdoor pilot from Supernatural) I never would've watched, but I still wish we'd have gotten Wayward Sisters. And I'm definitely watching the upcoming prequel series. But liking the main show is definitely not an assurance in any way.

Though I've seen a handful of episodes here and there, Cheers is actually in a unique position where I am far more familiar with the spin-off, Frasier, than the main show. Also, who here remembers that The Simpsons is actually a spin-off?

Yes, absolutely, it makes me feel like I'm in on some inside joke among the cast of the show, it's fun! I had seen enough Cheers to definitely get what I was supposed to out of the crossover characters that turned up on Frasier, as for example.

Oh my god I love stargate Atlantis. The wraith are good ennemies. Also are the replicators/asurans. Still the last season, season 5 was kinda bad though I love Whoolsey as a captain of Atlantis. Weir was also good but they killed her sadly. However ronon and Teyla are underused. Oh and I love McKay ❤️ He is so awkwardly adorable.

I'm still confused to this day why they killed Weir off. Well, obviously it was to give Amanda Tapping a job when she wanted it, after SG-1 ended. And then when she landed Sanctuary, she was able to leave, and it was all for nothing. I think it was crappy of them to do to Torri Higginson, so I understand why she didn't want to return for season 5. But I love the story and the cast. It's so weird to see Jason Mamoa as this big star after him playing Ronon on this tiny show that could on Syfy!
 
Yes, but I’ll also watch a spin-off if the spin-off concept is more interesting than the main show.

For example, I despise The Walking Dead, stopped at S3, but I think the recently announced Maggie & Negan series that takes place in NYC sounds cool. It’ll probably suck, but I like urban apocalypse stories/settings. I’ve never seen Beavis and Butthead (and don’t want to), but I love Daria.

The title of “spin-off” is also a little difficult to nail down, because sometimes it feels more like a sequel series than a spin-off. Technically TNG and subsequent Trek shows are spin-offs of the original, but they’re also more sequel programs.

I really wish more shows would do the spin-off angle! There’s plenty of characters in good or even bad/middling programs and films that have the potential to lead an amazing show

I wish spinoffs were more common (and reboots a lot less). Give the writers and actors time to refresh rather than getting burned out while taking the show's success for granted or not caring (and it shows in story and acting).

And one pointed out Daria above to Beavis & Butt-head...the spinoff was far superior, and I get the impression I don't hold a minority opinion there (but it's story told--good for them for knowing when to end a story rather than letting it turn into a zombie of itself--and there were music copyright issues that monkeywrenched getting the dvds out, etc).


The best parts of spinoffs for me is how they can expand the world, and also give a different perspective that feels just as valid. Angel did that to the Buffyverse. Most examples I'm thinking of are books, so I don't want to list them.

I mostly will watch spin-offs of shows I've enjoyed. I think the best spin-offs are ones that develop their own themes, not just continuing the same idea as the original. For instance, as mentioned above, Frasier was a very different show from Cheers. However, I also liked most of the Star Trek franchises (even better than the original), and they were very similar, just more being in space and encountering aliens!👽

I was just saying on another thread that I just finished watching Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, which was good. But it was so completely different and disconnected from the original PD as to not really be either a spin-off or sequel.

I like it if characters do cameos on spin-off shows, though I like it better if they have a real purpose for being there, not just to prop up the new show's ratings. For instance, Buffy, Spike, and Faith had good storylines on AtS, not just "Hi! Cameo!"
 
Angel and Frasier are 2 of my all time favourite shows, I am starting to prefer Better Call Saul to Breaking Bad, and as a kid I used to love Mork and Mindy so I do like a good spin off.
But the thing that made all these shows work is that they built their own world and created their own identity which wasn't entirely dependant on the original show

And I do like a good cross over episode. Its great seeing characters interact again, and its nice to see characters outside the confines of their own show - it almost makes it feel like they have a life apart from their show that we don’t normally get to see!

I actually wish there were more spin offs but I don’t automatically watch them - although I will eventually get round to watching at least the first few eps of the Game of Thrones spin off!
 
Generally speaking, if I enjoyed the original show I'll give a spinoff a shot, assuming it's a real spinoff. However, to qualify as a spinoff to me, you have to meet one of two criteria.

1) Established characters (translation at least regularly re-occurring) are headed to the new show. Angel is a prime example here.

2) The world setup is unique enough that it's apparent to anyone who watched the original that this is a spinoff. Star Trek shows are a prime example of this.

I tend to ignore backdoor pilots where this will be the only time the two cross paths or even acknowledge each other.

Case in point: The Finder. The Finder is technically classified as a spinoff of Bones, because Bones did one episode with the Finder characters that was primarily focused on Finder characters. That's not a spinoff to me.
 
Well, technically, 80s Star Trek series are considered successor series. The only true spin off was DS9. I don’t know how that applies to modern trek.

Yes, I will usually watch spin-offs, especially if they spin-off a character I really like eg. Angel from BtVS or Klaus from TVD.

In my experience, I usually do prefer spinoffs. Angel > BtVS, The Originals > TVD, Once Upon a Time In Wonderland > OUAT, Melrose Place > 90210

Some spinoffs are better and some are worse than the original shows. CSI started in Las Vegas and CSI New York was better but CSI Miami was worse. Maude was OK but Golden Girls was better. NCIS was good, NCIS New Orleans was different but not necessarily better or worse and NCIS LA was tiresome after a while. I haven't seen NCIS Hawai'i yet.

There have been cameos in these shows and for the most part, they work well.

I think the only spin off (besides Angel) that I watch is Law and Order: SVU and Law and Order: Organized Crime.
 
Not sure if it counts as a spinoff, but the only one I can think of (aside from Fraiser) is The King of Queens spun off from Everybody Loves Raymond.

I like Everybody Loves Raymond more than King of Queens. I haven’t seen enough of Cheers to be able to judge if I like it more or less than Fraiser.
 
There was several more times than once a film called Dracula, there has since been many a series called Dracula, though they do have one thing is common, they are easy to forget.
