Would someone explain it to me?
I've done my research, been on tvtropes.org but I just don't get it.
Is it meant to be funny, i.e. listing stereotypes? But then some of them aren't stereotypes and it's just confusing.

Also, what is "TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Life"?

I don't know if I'm just being stupid (it's more than likely!) but it just doesn't make sense to me. 😕

Yes.

And sure, their definition of "trope" is way too wide as long as one doesn't take things too seriously, who cares. A trope is n't a stereotype, it's storytelling device. It could be unique or at least very rare or it could be a beaten to death cliche.

Basically, the idea is that the more you know about the way works of fiction are created, the more difficult it is to enjoy them.

I saw this post and subsequently spent more time than I could spare with multiple TV Tropes tabs up. Thanks a lot!

Seriously, I love it. It is overwhelming at first, but funny and sarcastic and interesting and good for writers to have. I'm using the magical girl pages there to write my parody magical girl series.
 
It's not necessarily meant to be funny although a lot of the content does end up that way. The purpose is mainly to examine themes that recur across fiction in various media. If you're thinking about how cool it is that Buffy is a sassy badass female hero, you could poke around in there to find more sassy badass female hero characters. If you're irritated by seeing the same plot device in multiple stories, you could find a listing of them to prove your point and make you even more irritated.

It is very, very addictive.
 
Interesting! I just read up on what TV Tropes are and then looked up a bunch of Buffy related ones. Definitely some cool realizations that can influence a person's every day view on not only dialogue in TV and movies but also just in real life conversations.
 
I saw some tropes that I was very happy I wasn't the only one to be bothered by. For example, this one about how rape is apparently okay if it's divine on mortal.

A pretty good site to go to if you have complaints and want to make sure you're not overreacting and other people have noticed the same thing.

I'm a Sailor Moon fan!! Sailor Moon(A.K.A. Bunny/Annie) was Serenity, which I think is another name for Selene, and Mamuro, sailor moon's boyfriend, is also named Endymion. Blurgh! I don't think the author knew or cared about the exact deatils of this myth, but that makes this manga often read by children a bit creepy.
