Hey all, this is actually something I began writing in 2003 on these very boards. When I stopped by to check up on the boards, I ran into a few old karma that said some very flattering things about it. The story came back into my head and I decided that when I stopped, I was SO close to the finish that I decided to finally finish the story once and for all. Once I began writing the next part though, I began to look through the rest of the story so far... and I was irked because it looked like crap. I think the story was there but it featured mispelled, bad grammar, and some silly things that I felt should be changed.

So... that is what I am doing right now... re-editing the whole thing so it looks like it was written by a human being. But as I write it, there are some concepts and ideas that I felt could be expanded on more... so this edition will feature scenes and some ideas that were not in the original. Also, I tried making the dialogue more Whedon-esque. Basically, I am attempting to make it seem like a more complete work than just me free style writing. I wrote this before I went to College which explains why the original's writing was so crude.

For the most part, the story and plot remains as when I first envisioned it. There will be some little things added like scenes and maybe another character arc, but the original vision remains the same. The story takes place twenty years after the Hell Mouth was destroyed. Basically, Angel season 5 and BTVS season 8 never happen... since I started writing this before those two and I had a story that I mapped out way back then... which is the same story I am using now. From now on, all installments of the 2011 re-write will be posted here. After that I will begin posting the rest of the story so it can finally get finished on this same thread. I am in the middle of that part right now... and I am enjoying it.

If anyone wants a link to the original threads with this story just ask me so you can compare and contrast if needed.

Since most of you are new to this story (I would imagine), feedback will be greatly appreicated.

I hope you all enjoy... here is BTVS: Twenty Years Later Part One

Chapter 1
Burial Grounds

She walks through the graveyard, her blonde with very slight gray streaked hair flowing in the harsh winds of this foreign atmosphere. Sure she has traveled all around the world over the last twenty years, but this is place that she has been trying to stay away from all of that time. It just reminded her too much of what she has been told was her true calling. That's why she left America all of those years back. She chose a normal life and she paid for it. Only in the last couple of months has she realized that she was truly living a life of seclusion. She hasn't had very many friends over the past fifteen years, she didn't choose not to be a slayer, she chose to be dead again. But it just seemed like even though she wasn't the only slayer anymore that she was called as long as she stayed with her family. She would keep trying to leave, but they would just keep pulling her back in. First it was just to restart the Watchers council, then it was to train more slayers, then she was battling vampires again. No matter which way the dice rolled, she was still THE SLAYER.

Buffy Summers slowly walks around the graveyard, checking the tombstones for a certain name, a name the means a lot to her. This is not something new, in fact, she has had to do this many times over the course of the last few years. So many names come to mind, Jesse, Jenny, Kendra, her mom, herself, Tara, Jonathan, Anya, Rona, and her biological father. She has outlived them all, even though her life expectancy was to not live past her earl -twenties. Her destiny was to actually die. But oddly enough, she outlived those she was sworn to protect and it eats her up inside. In that lies the truth that has been haunting her since she found out about the death in the family: she is the oldest slayer that has ever lived. Which might answer a question that no one ever bothered to ask: What happens if a slayer is not slain in battle? The answer has been creeping up on her in the last few days. While most are supposed to get weaker with age, she feels as strong as she ever has. That leaves her with the revelation that Buffy Summers will never die.

While thinking this through, she stops dead in her tracks. She had just found the headstone she has been looking for. It is actually more a shrine than a headstone. As she walks closer, she thinks that if anybody deserved a shrine it was this man. She begins reading the words and bursts into tears once she is done reading the passage written on the shrine. She hasn't cried like this since her mom died. Who can blame her for this is the man she only truly loved. While he wasn't her biological father, he was the closest thing she had to one. She gets down on one knee as she mourns her watcher. With her head bowed down the tears pour onto the very soggy grass as she reads the words transcribed in front of the shrine.

HE WATCHED OVER ALL OF MANKIND
A FATHER TO US ALL
THE MAN WHO MADE HEROES

She knows that each engraving was written by each member of her family. Even though she hasn't seen them in five years they were indeed a family. Three sisters, a brother and Rupert was of course the father. In the beginning, he would point and tell them what to do and she would lead them through the darkness. Each time, she thought she would lose one of them, but each time her family over came all odds. But apparently, those odds can't last forever, at least not for her mentor. She thinks back to the last time she saw him, fifteen years ago, she told him and her regretfully put them behind her to flee from this life of fighting. Buffy Summers fought against evil for seven plus years and then shared her powers with the rest of the potentials. She felt that she deserved to retire. That wasn't going to happen had she stayed with them. She missed out on the last fifteen years of their lives because of this. She was not there when her sister got married. She was not there when her brother and other sister got their respective promotions. And finally, she wasn't there to prevent this death in the family. This remorse grows deeper and deeper the more she thinks about it. But before she can go any deeper into the dark place she realizes that there is someone behind her.

"You know" The says a gentleman in his forties. "He mentioned you in his last words."

She turns around to see a face she had dearly missed. It is true that he had gotten older. He is bald and put on a few pounds but it is him. Xander Harris still has that charming smile that she remembered"¦ and he kept the eye patch. She stands up still sobbing and the two look each other not knowing what to say at this exact moment. Instead of saying anything she rushes into his arms and continues to weep. He pats her back as they embrace. She feels that bittersweet feeling of joy at a funeral. After thirty seconds they release their grasp on each other. The next three seconds is filled by awkward glaring.

"Uh" Buffy begins as she wipes the tears from her eyes, then she flashes that old, but still beautiful smile. "What am I supposed to say, Xander? It has been so long."

"I don't really think now is the time to bring back past emotional issues, Buff. You left we cried and were forced to move on without" He wipes a tear from her eye with his index finger. "Right now, I'm just happy to see you again though I wish it were under happier circumstances."

"I am so sorry I missed the procession. I only got word a few days back." She immediately bursts back into tears. Xander reaches over and puts his hand on her shoulder. " I'm sorry that I missed out on everything." She didn't think that her emotions would come out so quickly. She leans her head on his shoulder as his hand gently rubs her back.

"I will be honest, for the last fifteen years I have been thinking of different ways I could tell you off for running out. But before he passed, he had a request. He requested that if you ever came back, to let you back in with arms wide open"¦ and not let you go again. That's a promise I plan to keep." He lets his embrace go once more as they have another moment of silence.

She twirls her blonde hair as she decides that for the time being that the conversation needs to go into a lighter territory. "I heard that you are the one running the council now.

"Yes." For a moment she sees the sixteen year old Xander Harris smiling back at her behind the face of the older man she is speaking to now. " It was left to me in his will. You haven't seen bitter until you are in a room full of stuck older men who just found out that the largest army supernatural policing had been left to Dracula's love slave. I was even a little more shocked than when he pronounced me an official after the destruction of the Hell Mouth. The day to day is tough and the red tape that the senior members of the council make for me is sometimes impossible, but we are making due."

"Well," She smiles at how humble Xander has become over the years. It saddens her that she missed when he went from man to leader. "You have been watching my back since day one..."

"I didn't mind that part of the job." Xander says with a chuckle.

For whatever reason, that comment takes her back to the High School years. "He chose the right man for the job. She pauses again remembering that there is another's fate she was concerned about. "How has Dawn been?"

"Dawn has been great. She has grown into quite the woman" He says as they begin walking away from the shrine. "Oddly enough, she has the same taste in men that you have."

A curious look appears on her face as he says this. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Maybe you will find out someday." He pauses and looks back at her with an unsure look on his face. "She's been a watcher for the last seven years you know?"

"Really?" Buffy isn't surprised. Getting involved in this "business" seems to be a trait that runs with her family. There was just never getting away from it. In Dawn's case, she just wanted to run closer and closer towards it.

"Yes, but like me, she wasn't a natural at first." He pauses for a moment. "She learned the mental physical risks it takes to be a watcher very quickly."

"What risk would that be?"

"Responsibility which is a hard thing I had to learn when you are the baby sister of the slayer. Her first slayer died within two weeks which nearly broke her. Her second one took Faith's path, we had to send Kennedy to take her into custody. That one made her almost suicidal."
"Oh," Buffy stops to ponder. "I should have been there for her."

Xander shakes his head. "There is nothing any of could do about it now though Buffy. After she took a few years off doing clerical work for the council but it was just a matter of time before she got the itch again. She is still the watcher of the third slayer who many of us believe is at Kennedy levels of comprehension. Shortly thereafter she met her husband and within a year of dating they got hitched and are happily married.

"Please tell me it's not Andrew." She shudders at the thought

Xander chuckles just a little bit as she asks this. "No, like I said, he closely resembles someone you knew very well."

Again, she asks a small talk question to avoid the real one on her mind. " How's Willow doing?"

Xander now looks complex at this question. "I wouldn't know." He pauses for a moment. "She like you, moved on"¦ but we aren't exactly sure what she moved on to. She said the coven had a special operation for her that meant that her time with us would be limited for years to come. They didn't tell her what it was. They just said it was a very time consuming job."

"But what about Kennedy? What about you?" Buffy asks frantically worried about her old friend.

"Buff, she was stuck doing minor magic for the council when she could be helping the world in varied other ways. It was time for her to move on. She did make an appearance at the funeral. We caught up briefly"¦ but she didn't us what her top secret mission was." Xander gives a remorseful look to her.

Buffy is concerned because she is hearing her story repeated to her over again. "But with barely seeing you or working with her colleagues"¦ she might turn into something like me. She might be a loner."

"I think after awhile she wanted to be alon. The girl has been through a lot"¦ maybe more than all of us." Xander pauses for a moment. "Even you never had to confront the dark side inside you face to face. Plus, Kennedy kicked her to the curb once she realized that the lesbian thing was a phase."

Buffy is saddened by this revelation. "Ouch. Maybe you are right. Maybe whatever she is doing is better for her."

Xander scratches his bald head for a moment. "That isn't to say that the rest of have been so lucking in that area either though. My love life has never been anything to write home about."

"What about your love life?" Buffy smiles asking curiously. "Do you mean to tell me that you haven't dated anyone since Anya passed?"

"I've been arried twice actually." He says regretfully.

"Really," a warm smile crosses her face as he says this. "How come things didn't work out?"

"My first wife, Sandra, left me when she found out I wasn't an architect but was instead taking underage girls under my wing." He chuckles as he tells this story.

Buffy giggles as well as her tears dry on her cheek. "I can see how that wouldn't go over well."

He continues going on about his first wife. "Also, she always felt like she was living in Anya's shadow. She just didn't trust me as much as I trusted her. Apparently I shouldn't have. I caught her making out with a sloth demon." He has a bright smile on his face trying to hide the embarrassment.

After hearing that story now was craving to hear about the second one. It was nice catching up on old times like this. "Who was the second wife?"

"Clem" A very amused look crosses her face, she laughs a little bit. " It was a spell that Andrew cast, imagine trying to carry that over the threshhold, couldn't lift anything ever since."

Both burst into laughter as he goes over this hilarious past event. Once they are done laughing, Buffy decides it's time to get to the real question she has in mind. "Xander, I hate to ask this, but how did his body look in the casket during the funeral?"

Xander's face turns from a huge smile to a frown very quickly. "He looked peaceful... though I'm afraid to tell you this but he didn't die peacefully"

She was hoping that it was just a heart condition or something natural but deep down inside she knew he was murdered. And deep down inside she knew"¦ she would have to do something about it. "Xander who did it.
Xander begins to explain with a very blank expression on his face. " I don't know, I came right after he was attacked. From what I could tell it was a mob of vampires who did it"¦ but they got their marching orders from someone. Someone lured him there." Xander solemnly stops for a moment. "He"¦ he "¦ he had internal injuries. He was suffering and there was no way to get him to a witch or a doctor in time. I had to"¦ I had to"¦

Tears begin trickling down her eyes once more and she puts her hand over his lovelyingly "Xander, I'm so sorry, if anyone had to do it, it should have been me."

"No," She is shocked once Xander goes to his knees and begins to ball into tears. "It shouldn't have been anyone of us. This shouldn't have happened to him. He deserved a natural death, not this tragedy. Every day, he put his life on the line for the God forsaken earth and what is the thanks he gets? And why? It was probably for some stupid mystical reason or revenge ploy. It's not fair, Buffy. And the scary thing is"¦ I'm probably going to go the same way."

Buffy kneels down and begins massaging Xanders back in a comforting fashion. "It doesn't have to be that way, Xander. It is your job now. I believe that you can eventually end all of this."

"Buffy how?" Xander begins as the tears come down. "He was the chairman the council has ever seen and even he couldn't put stop to it. In fact, things just got worse once more slayers were in the world. He handled it fine"¦ but even he was killed by the thing he was trying to protect the world from. What chance do I have?"

It is Buffy's turn to wipe the tears from his eyes. "Xander stop it!" She rests her head on his shoulder. "You two were the strongest men I know. Stronger than Angel and stronger than Spike. If he didn't find a way to put the kibosh on evil"¦ you will. I have faith in you."

He sniffles a little bit. "You are right. We can do this. Things might seem bleak right now but under my command"¦ under Sargeant Rock's command"¦"

Buffy interrupts as he continues. "Don't call yourself that."

"Under my command we ARE going to figure this out and once again, the balance between good and evil will be re-weighed with us on top again." He lo back at her. "Thanks Buffy!

As he blows his nose, Buffy moves the conversation to the matter at hand for her. Her watcher is dead"¦ at least just this once"¦ Buffy the Vampire Slayer is going to get her revenge on whoever did this to her Watcher. "What have you done to find out what bastard did this to him? I mean The Watcher's Council must have done something to look into this, right?"

Still crying he looks back up at Buffy. "I've tried, but most of the council's attention has been focused on the L.A situation."

Buffy is once again confused, she hasn't watched the news or read the newspapers, so she has no clue what has been happening around the world. "What happened in Los Angles?"

I can relate to your thoughts when you looked back at what you'd done. When ever I look back at one I did I cringe. In those days, before I learnt how to do Ctrl C - Ctrl V, I had to type each chapter onto the screen. Given that my typing speed was slow, each chapter took 4 to 5 hours to post. Consequently, near the end of each chapter my grammar and punctuation got worse, so did the story.
Unlike you though, I don't think I could face re-doing it after all there was 65 chapters in the story.
