Twilight

The concept doesn't bother me, I'm just skeptical that CBS will air a smart, compelling, edgy vampire detective show.

You know, when the third Dark Shadows was in development, people were making the same sorts of arguments, when it has nothing in common with Angel except that it's about vampires. But if people are going to hold irrational grudges against a show, then we can all kiss sci fi on tv goodbye.

I completely agree. I felt the same way during the 2005-2006 season. Every single show that dealt with "weird" things was accused of being a rip-off of "Lost". Threshold, Surface, Invasion, Night Stalker, Supernatural, and Ghost Whisperer, and this season Jericho and Heroes.

NONE of them are "Lost" rip-offs. Plots are completely different, all of them except Jericho feature heavy sci-fi elements whereas Lost is much more subtle (we don't even know if something otherworldly is going on on Lost), etc. Watching those shows...none of them made me think of Lost, yet many Lost fans refused to watch them, which is unbelievably stupid.

I also agree that no one can say there are too many similarities when the only thing we know so far is it's about a vampire detective...that's only similar in the most superficial way. Besides, Angel was never really about detecting, was it? We never saw him be a TRUE detective actively, that was just his job.
 
Honestly, take away the detective element and the love for a mortal woman and people would still say it's ripping off Angel because the lead is a male vampire.

As has already been pointed out, Angel never really was a detective. The mystery of each case and the solving of them was never much of an element, which is perhaps a shame. And Angel's love for Buffy wasn't so much that she was mortal and him immortal, it was more to do with the forbidden aspect of him being a vampire and her being a vampire slayer. The definition of both is that they should have been enemies and actively trying to kill each other.

Yeah, but anyway, we all know that Angel was secretly in love with Wesley, so the "mortal woman" part doesn't really count as a similarity 😛.
