Will any of you go and see the film? I've not read any of the books but it look like an alright film. And anyone who as read the books should i read them?

synopsis of the film

Isabella Swan moves to gloomy Forks to live with her father. As she starts her junior year in high school she becomes fascinated by Edward Cullen who holds a dark secret which is only known by his family. Edward falls in love with Bella as well but knows the further they progress in their relationship the more he is putting Bella and those close to her at risk. Edward warns Bella that she should leave him but she refuses to listen and to understand why he is saying this. Bella learns his secret. He is a vampire, however she is not afraid of his blood-thirsty needs and the fact he could kill her at any moment. Bella is afraid of losing him, the love of her life. The thrill begins when a new vampire finds it a challenge to hunt Bella down for her irresistible blood. The game is on and James will not stop until she is killed.

Should you read the books? Well, it depends on what you're looking for. If you're trying to find a fine piece of literature, Twilight is the single furthest thing from it...they're ridiculous, mindless, mysoginistic, almost none of the main characters have anything resembling a flaw, and Stephenie Meyer's writing is reminiscent of a 12-year-old girl's crappy Buffy/Angel fanfic (a sample sentence from Breaking Dawn: "He was both dazzling and dazzled.")

Still, if you want something that's enjoyable and easy to read, the series is definitely worth checking out. For some reason that I just can't seem to figure out, they're SO much fun and incredibly addictive. And I totally plan to see the midnight showing of the movie, if they're having them anywhere around here (although I'm still not sure what I think of Robert and Kristen as Edward and Bella...I might still be clinging to Gaspard Ulliel and Emily Browning, but oh well. And Taylor Lautner just might be the single worst Jacob they could possibly have picked.)

I've read the first book and I thought it was pretty good! Although I have heard that a lot of people don't like the later ones....
I'm definitely going to see the movie though.

I was already way too annoyed with the book, so no no to the movie for me.
If you want to watch the film though, I recommend reading the book afterwards if you like it. It has happened so often to me that a book rocks but then they screw up the movie...if you do it the other way you're mostly just likely to even find the book more amazing.

I agree with what Cangel said... if you haven't read the books, wait until after you see the movie. I'm deeply afraid that I'm going to be disappointed, considering I have read the series multiple times.

I will be seeing the movie. I originally was thinking of seeing it at midnight, but then thought better of it. I want to hear the movie without the teeny-boppers screaming Edward love during it. There has only been one scene where I have really liked Rob Pattinson as Edward... after he knocks James away in the ballet theatre and whips around to face Bella... total Edward there. The rest of it, I"m like, eh.

I've read the books - really enjoyed the first three - hated the last one. Will I see the movie? Maybe. Before I read the last book I would have said certainly but now i'm a bit iffy on the whole franchise.

Oh dear god, I absolutely loathed these books. *shudders* So much anti-feminism and bad messages to send to young readers.

EDIT: Oh! And absolutely no plot whatsoever until the end of the book. *rolls eyes* It's mostly "I love you" "No, I love you MORE", "No, I love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!" "*squee!*"

I can't believe the hate that exists for these books. Makes me sad, if you aren't making the comparison to the 'verse, they are enjoyable, sometimes suspenseful, romatic, action and intrigue filled novels.
I have loved reading them since teh first time I opened Twilight and I'll definately be seeing the movie (although *shudder* some of the casting choices are a complete mystery to me, WHY!)

I just bought it in Walmart. Went there to get a body pillow and I left with Twilight. My roommate is obsessed with it. She said I couldn't leave without it. Hopefully I'll be back with some thoughts on it.

I'm reading the book right now - so far it's allright. Some people I worked with worked on the Twilight movie and said it suucckkked. But editing can do wonders so we'll see. I'll probably check it out.

You have to go in knowing that you are not reading a literary classic. Then you'll love the books.

I really hope the movie doesn't suck. I do hope they do have editing magic.... 🙂

I read the books, but I'm not sure I'll be watching the movie. The books were pure drivel. I kept feeling as if the author was holding back. She'd develop a potentially interesting scenario and then resolve it in as quick and pat a manner as possible. Most movies condense novel plots even further, so I can't imagine being thrilled with the film adaptation, you know?

hmm mixed messages guys! I'm not sure i really can't stand lovey dopey books. I like blood and guts 😉 but i think i'll borrow them from the library and see how i go.

Favorite book at the moment: Age of five trilogy Trudi Canavan 🙂

They're AWFUL. I read them way before the hype for them was all up and I found myself continually snorting in disgust at the cheesiness and unrealistic fantasies. Seriously.

It is, in my opinion, not only the worst, but the most cheese-tastic book series that exists.

I would say that you would find much more cheesy book series out there. The people that scream 'hate these ridiculous books' always intrigue me. I'm sitting here thinking... okay, it's written for teenagers, it's about vampires (which contrary to popular belief, are not real) and it's a love story. You were expecting what when you picked it up? Tolstoy? Hello..........!!!!!!!!

What's the problem with Twilight?
Some of the situations are a bit unbelievable, but it is fantasy. To my thinking it's a tame fantasy, but then that's why that book is a really big seller and I'm seriously not.
But to say the ending of a situation was to quick, in my experience the build up to an end can take a long time. They researched the vampire, hunted the vampire, fought with the vampire, they dusted the vampire. So yeah, the end is quick.
As a genre, fantasy is usually directed towards the younger reader, how many readers of fantasy want a two page description of a person and what they are wearing?, so classic literature would make it unreadable to that age group of reader.
If you want classic literature and fantasy, have a look at the early vampire tales. I.E. early to mid 1800's. Any offers for the original Charles Dickens? A description of the ghost of christmas past?

The issue is addressed - Edward doesn't believe that he has a soul, despite what Bella and Carlisle tell him. The Cullens are kind of an anomaly in Meyer's vampire world, though - they're 'vegetarians' in that they only kill and drink the blood of animals.

It's never really stated out and out if they do have souls, but the actions of the other vamps in the series (Victoria, James, the Volturi etc.) seems to suggest that they have no qualms with killing humans.

Meyer's changed the vampire mythology around a lot in the books - her vamps are pretty much unrecognisable from the traditional vampire legends and myths.
