Two Episodes in, I already see why everyone is bummed it only got 1 season

I saw Firefly on Hulu, and not having seen Buffy in quite a while, I decided to give this other Joss Whedon project a go. From the picture I inferred it to be another Star Trek clone, but that assumption could not have been further from the truth.

The best way to describe this show is "It's Red Dead Redemption 2, but in space." And that "in space" part is very liberally applied at that. All the guns, the outfits, the settings, the lawless world is pretty much the wild west. It's not a sci-fi at all, apart from the minor X-Files vibes surrounding mystery girl who was subjected to government experiments. Other than that, and the fact that prostitutes are treated as nobility, it's pretty much a western that takes place in the far future instead of the 19th century, but everything still looks and feels 19th century anyway.

With all this talk of rebooting established IPs at every chance they get, to pass up a chance at resurrecting this show would seem like a huge missed opportunity. If Whedon were still up for it, this would be one of the few "reboots" I'd be interested in. They might continue with the original cast if this happened, but given the time gap/age, it might be better to start anew with a younger cast.

Anyway, I'm only 2 episodes in like I said, so please no spoilers below, if you'd be so kind 🙂

I hope you enjoy the rest of it! I think the fact that it got a movie to finish it put an end to that cast but I'd love to see another show in a similar world.

It deserves a reboot, in my opinion, though how fans would feel about it (x-ref: many threads about a Buffy reboot) might be another thing. I can see it being billed as "'Yellowstone' in space."

The bigger issue is how much of a tough sell sci-fi shows are. The Expanse was met with almost universal acclaim and was hailed as “Game of Thrones in space”, but struggled to get to somewhat of a rushed final season. The budgets of these shows are just too high for the average network to finance.

Perhaps as a streaming service offering, like Mandalorian and such. A Firefly reboot could be something like Hulu’s breakout sci-fi original.

And yeah whenever I describe Firefly to people, I say it's a western in space.
I would only be down for a reboot if it has all the original actors and creators involved.
Make sure you watch the film Serenity as well.

Trek never really answers that question, or rather, 20th Century Science Fiction never answers that. Firefly tries to. Given the decade saw the end of the last Trek series in Enterprise, and the airing of the ultimate in Trek rebuttals in Battlestar Galactica, it was certainly on to something.

The reason for the Federation forming Star Fleet and boldly going where no one has gone before is for societal and scientific advancement. Humanity has managed to find peace and unity and now works together to explore the galaxy because the challenge/point of life has become to improve yourself and expand your knowledge.

Per “The Neutral Zone” from TNG S1, money, food, etc are all in abundance and there is no classism or superiority on Earth, really. Society has transitioned to trying to better themselves intellectually, hence the desire and goal to explore space as a unified culture.

Sisko even renders an entire world lifeless, forcing rebels from displaced colonists to flee. And it's shown as good. Not so much better than the days we used Agent Orange in Vietnam. I think even the Alliance would be shocked by Sisko

Not really. DS9 is a very gray-area series that explores the moral quandaries and complexities of war in Star Trek. What Sisko did is portrayed as absolutely wrong, especially in the scene where he unloads the torpedoes. If I remember right, he even has to basically force Worf to launch the torpedoes, since there is intense apprehension from him when he is ordered to do so.

What balances it out and makes it gray is the fact that the rebels knowingly exposed the people to that danger and the possibility of reprisal by hiding amongst them. They essentially used their own people as meat shields because they didn’t expect anyone to be brazen enough to actually act against them in a way that endangered civilians.

It wasn’t the right choice at all. It was the choice Sisko had to make in an extremely difficult situation, but the show really didn’t portray it as good at all, especially in the moment.

To tie it back to the thread, what was the reason given for humanity settling outer colonies, @AlphaFoxtrot ? My understanding (from what I remember) is that Firefly’s world is basically just operating on the basis of “earning more money”, but the farther you get from the core, the poorer and more miserable everyone is.
