I haven't seen this posted anywhere on the site, but if it has been discussed already my apologies :]
So I was thinking the other day....in the entire world there are only 2 slayers....yet they are BOTH in California. How is that even logical? Necessary for the storyline of course...but realistic?

I do tend to overanalyze everything 😛

Nothing wrong with overanalyzing!!
It still makes fine sense with Kendra (neither her nor her watcher knew Buffy was still/again alive and slaying), and she seemed to get sent around the world alot during her missions, only showing up at the California Hellmouth when that registered for her watcher as the "prime crisis zone".

With Faith, it makes sense up until she meets Giles. After all, she has lost her Watcher (who will have known about where Buffy is "stationed", and probably told Faith about it, too), so I see no problem with her going to see "that other Slayer" when she became guideless. When the Council finds out about her being in Sunnydale, however, I don't see it making any sense at all that they assign Giles/Wes as Watcher for both Slayers instead of sending Faith off with a new Watcher to, say, Timbuktu. Not like there was any shortage of Watchers up until S7, was there?

But then, we never see the Slayer that got called after The Gift (*stubbornly insists that there was one* XD ). Perhaps she was, like Kendra, a "global free agent". I definitely can see the CoW keeping her as a "wild card", secret from Giles and Buffy - there was hardly any trust between them and the CoW end of S5/start of S6 anymore.

Maybe this will teach you - there was no Slayer called AFTER Buffy died in The Gift!
Well the thing I always found odd was when Buffy was actually the "only" one in all the world, yet she only ever did any world saving in Sunnydale or LA before that... surely that one little town in California was not where all the action was happening, even if it was the hellmouth... I mean Cleveland for one... or you'd think every once on a while she'd need to take a little roadtrip to help ALL those in need elsewhere!

I believe that Buffy serviced everything in Sunnydale, the US army everything outside 😉

But no, well you have to give a show a geographical limit, otherwise it is rediculous (God, I can't spell this morning) and they'll just spend all episodes killing demons in planes, or maybe good old German U-Boats. Anyway, I think that there is to some extent a flaw in the concept, which we just should not try to stumble into. It sounds nicer to say "into every generation" and so on. However, it also always buggered me. They should make a spinoff a German slayer during World War 2, fighting Demons and stuff like it and always missing the obvious ones. I wonder if she would have had a British watcher 😀

Yeah the whole thing was a bit touch and go. From what I understand they wrote it off as 'destiny'. Basically a Slayer was called to Sunnydale because everything was heating up in the Hellmouth. Giles says Buffy's arrival was no a coincidence because it coincided with the Masters uprising.

I agree that it must have been something to do with destiny. Like, the slayer is called where she's most needed, and I guess Sunnydale was getting pretty hairy, so another one was called in California. I mean, there are so many potentials around the world, how is the Slayer selected? I think it's a pretty good guess to say it's on basis of where she's needed most. And if there isn't one in the particular town, the nearest option is called, hence Giles calling Buffy coming to Sunnydale not a coincidence. She was needed there.
But it's a shame Buffy never went abroad. She could have some very interesting adventures in, say, England, or Japan or Mexico. Or New York (which isn't abroad of course, but quite far away at least)

We did get Giles and Willo abroad but I do think that Buffy should have ventured at least south.

It would have been fun to see Buffy vs Chupacabra in Mexico or something.

I have always believed that a Slayer is called to where she is needed BUT that doesn't mean she spends her entire life there - What are the chances of all the big beasties all coming to her?

There is also the factor to consider that slayers generally don't live that long. The idea is that they are dropped at the biggest hotspot of the moment when they are called, and are moved around if need be. However, since the Sunnydale Hellmouth was so active, and since Kendra was handling the globetrotting, I don't think it's so weird that Buffy stayed based there. The Watchers' Council didn't expect her to last 7 years, and the longer she lived the less control they had over her.

and since Kendra was handling the globetrotting,

Kendra lived as the Slayer for a year at most - Faith then turned evil within the year.

While I agree with the whole 'Council lost control' I also think that IF The Council had told Buffy of a big bad growing in outer Mongolia she would have gone.

Or contacted Giles and informed him he would have felt obliged to ask Buffy to go.

Plus Buffy comes to an arrangement with the Council in season 5.

It could have been written in somehow that Buffy travelled and fought.

Its not like tey even needed to visit other countries, the sound stages could be done up to look like anywhere.

you seriously think bad karma from you could stop someone who ignores Word Of Joss? :P
Um... wasn't Faith from Boston? I think I read it somewhere.
The thing that bothers me, you see in season 7 all the potentials, and most of them are from either the US or the UK. Only those got lines (except for the Chinese one, love her!). How is that that many slayers are from both countries above? You see potentials getting killed from other countries. But still, most of the slayers come from the US+UK. If you see the history of other slayers from the past you will see that it's really weird.

I just think Slayers are usually sent to where they are needed the most. The hellmouth was currently the most active in Sunnydale, California so thats why it attracted so many demons and took sight of the Council. And well Faith came there on her own terms and had to stay due to her jailing.

But it was funny how it seemed like all the big things always happening would happen wherever the Slayer was originally from. Maybe thats how Slayers are activated most of the time? The potentials nearest to the danger get called.

Faith was indeed from the Boston area. In a conversation with the Mayor she talks about jumping off cliffs at a rock quarry in the Boston area.

But I don't think she was in the Boston area when she got called up. She talks about wrasslin a gator which would put her in New Orleans or Florida I guess. Also something about a busload of Parishoners and a Baptist minister so I'm thinking some southern state.

And Kendra was from the Islands so not even American.

And while on the subject of More than one slayer, if Buffy died just for a second at the end of season 1 and Kendra got called up, why was there no new slayer called up a the end of season 5? This was suppossed to be some mystical thing so it would seem logical that the forces knew she was dead.

It was the Baptists from South Boston if I remember correctly....

Basically Slayers are like calling cards. Once that calling card runs out, you have to go get a new one and its not rechargable. Buffy used her only calling card when she died in S1, thus activating Kendras calling card, when she died, Faiths calling card activated. And when she dies...you get the jist.

THATS RIGHT!!! I totally forgot about the Cleveland hellmouth....so how has the world not ended already with no slayer there? hmm....curious....

This is what I'm saying! A little mention of an offscreen roadtrip every now and then couldn't have hurt!

When would she have time for that, though? Every ep seems to take about 3 days, and one happens every week. Little time left for travels to Cleveland, unless we either go off the neatness of show time = real time, or allow for eps without Buffy...

It honestly doesn't bug me at all, its a show, its set in Sunnydale all the other characters are in Sunnydale and so for the show to work Buffy also needs to be in Sunnydale... its not neccesarily realistic but thats where the supension of disbelief comes in... and hey I'm totally cool with it, I wouldn't want an episode sans Buffy cause she had to be off in Russia preventing an apocalypse for a whole week. I was just saying, pretty much just for arguments sake, that throwing in once or twice a mention in passing of Buffy having been elsewhere for a couple days preventing such and such evil thing from wreaking havock wouldn't have been out of place... like say Buffy walks past Willow in the hall on the way to the bathroom and says something like, "Man I'm beat, jetlag from Paris is a bitch but that beastie was french toast the second I caught up with it. Its nice to be back in good ole Sunnyhell though... what did you guys do this weekend?" You know, something like that :silly: Although... crime fighting trips to France would mean that the council sent her there and put up the money for the trip, which HA! Guess thats a whole other discussion

The hellmouth in cleavland didnt seem to become active until the one in Sunnydale was shut down. And well doesnt Giles mention that in Chosen? Plus now they have slayers stationed everywhere so there is probably a team in Cleavland dealing with it.

I heard that Faith's from Boston, but it hasn't been confirmed in the show or in the comics. So, two slayers in the US isn't that weird (but convenient), because it's a huge country, so the odds are good. And Kendra, she was from... Jamaica? South-america?

Why do you think it wasn't activated before? After all, in The Wish, Buffy was in Cleaveland's Hellmouth.

And wasn't Faith in Cleaveland in No Future For You?

She's from Boston (hence the SLIGHT accent and the use of "wicked" among other things. And Kendra was from Jamaica too!

Because it wasnt drawing any major forces to it like the Sunnydale Hellmouth. If it had gotten as out of control like SDH then it would be to be taken care of. Unless the Watchers council or some group similar to the Fang Gang kept things under wraps.
