The other night I came across information that there was an early unaired version of the pilot featuring an actress by the name of Riff Reagan who was originally cast as Willow available to watch on Youtube.
After viewing it a couple of nights ago, I just finished viewing the actual episode -- or well the first part anyway, I must be turning in to bed soon, to evaluate differences. The actress alone had given us a much different atmosphere with a more fragile rather than Hannigan's snarky and quirky brand of awkward. I can see why she didn't bring the right image to the character. Honestly I can't say I would have bought Reagan in the witch and addict aspects of the role nor did she connect with Xander as well.

There were other factors that caught my attention such as it being quite rushed and there was no development or build up to the events of The Harvest including the absence of Angel. The most interesting however was that Willow was not the only character who ended up being recast and Principle Flutie received a pretty full written makeover in addition. The actor in the unaired pilot, Stephen Tobolowsky whom I am familiar with in his other roles such as the Disney remake of 'Freaky Friday' had brought a bit more of a nurturing but absent minded version of Flutie. I actually quite enjoyed all the incorrect names he'd address Buffy by and the scene which didn't make it to the final product where she'd asked to see the body of the gym locker boy was insightful to how she got that access but nonetheless I can see why it wasn't significant enough to be necessary.
The actual Flutie however had more of a sarcastic, droll type of humor which also came across in a very likable manner.

The contrast between the approaches of the introduction to Cordelia's character was also something that caught my attention. In the unaired pilot she had more of a Draco Malfoy direct "You need to get in with the right people and I am your ticket to that" approach while in the final version she was more mellow and natural about it. I kind of preferred the final version, it made her more human and actually kind of gave off the kind of vibe that could have easily been a vampire playing for Buffy's blind trust.

One thing that had me pumped in the unaired version was the climatic scene with the vampires when Reagan's Willow almost instinctually picks up a cross and dusts herself a vampire. Though I can see that being considered unfitting and kind of a rush in character evolution.

Clearly it hadn't been in the cards at the time to open the series with a dramatic and significant storyline. The way it ended gave more of a general opening to the idea and the Scoobie alliance.

Overall it was an interesting experience to view an early draft and see what could have been.

The thing is, we can't really imagine how it would have been, can we?
Maybe Willow wouldn't have been a witch but Xander a wizard (ok this is far-fetched, especially considering Whedon's strong characters storylines).

What I mean is, the characters arcs are also written considering what the actors can bring to the show, what employment and layers they can offer. Hannigan and Reagan wouldn't have developed into the same version of Willow.

However, I've never noticed. You point out that they replaced Reagan and Tobolowsky to go with quirkier and more sarcastic actors. It's interesting that Whedon and the production decided to go for a lighter route, when we know what's to come!

Also, I wished they had kept the scene where Xander and Buffy tour the campus. Instant friendship! It's so cute, imo.

I hadn't watched this through in forever. You know what - I wonder if they planned to put Buffy and Giles together. The way he looked at her at times was a bit...lingering. I loved Xander, and always disliked that Willow. That was nice - thanks!

Ah, the famous unaired pilot. I'm really glad with the changes they made. This is pretty much the opposite of the Dollhouse pilot (which was better as it was).

I have nothing against the actress that was suppose to play Willow originally, but after having had AH in the role, I wouldn't want anyone else to play Will. This is by far my favorite role for AH, I think she rocked it. She made Willow, well Willow. I just can't picture it any other way.

On a side note, I love watching these older episodes, whether its this or the real first episode, they have such a 90s feel to it.

haha agree on the Dollhouse pilot
Yeah, they got the casting for Willow right eventually. AH is Willow- she does insecure but smart really well, plus she can be angry/funny at the same time.
I also know that the original actress reading for Willow fluffed her lines quite a few times- which might've been a factor in going with somebody else.

Also I remember SMG had to read over and over again for Buffy (she had also come in to read for Cordelia) to the point that she was really tired and stressed out about it. (I think she was only nineteen/twenty at the time)

'I don't hit girls....that I'm afraid of.' 😀

I thought the fight scene in the auditorium was pretty impressive for a pilot.

All in all they improved what they needed to improve- although I agree they should've kept the tour of the school- that was great.

Hahaha, that was just kind of epically bad. I kind of felt like there was bad acting all over the place, or maybe it was the script... I'm very glad they made the changes they made because this felt more like a parody than an actual show to me. I am especially glad about the Willow change, I thought the actress here was really terrible, like really.

I thought, aside from the acting, this pilot was better than the pilot that was aired. I liked the vampires more in this- they were more like they were in the movies. But, speaking of pilots.. has any seen the Angel pilot? It was supposed to be much different.

You are right. Considering that Joss had spent a long time deciding between Willow and Xander for the character who would eventually come out as gay I can very much see more aspects of Hannigan's Willow being intended for Xander with Reagan's version of the role. Honestly I would have liked to see a gay Xander over the whole Xander/Anya relationship but I digress.

Also, I wished they had kept the scene where Xander and Buffy tour the campus. Instant friendship! It's so cute, imo.

I agree with this, the tour scene clicked the two characters together more strongly and maybe I need to go back and make sure but I believe in the unaired draft he had the "if you need a shoulder to cry on" line that was the Jesse's character's in the final. An insignificant character who was not there in the draft. I liked that line better as Xander's to be honest, it added to the instant chemistry between him and Buffy. Perhaps however Whendon wanted to drag out the development of the Scoobie friendships.

Oh I found Reagan's version adorable though the acting wasn't all that great, but being able to compare with the more upbeat way Hannigan delivered the role, Hannigan's version was for sure far more unique and entertaining.
"Aren't you hanging out with Cordelia?"
"I can't hang out with both of you?"
"Not legally."

Haha! That's the kind of thing I was talking about when I said her version was more quirky.
I'm really curious how someone who saw Reagan first would feel? That can make a huge difference in viewpoint.

Interesting thought, I'd assumed Angel's character hadn't been originally intended to exist from this pilot but hadn't really thought about the alternatives. I actually think Buffy/Giles is a semi-popular ship. I've seen it supported.
But ick, I can't decide which is more inappropriate, her and Giles or her and Angel.

Also I remember SMG had to read over and over again for Buffy (she had also come in to read for Cordelia)

Both SMG and Charisma Carpenter were flip flopped actually, Charisma had originally auditioned for the role of Buffy. Whenden not wanting the series to bare any resemblance to his original film hadn't initially wanted a blonde in the title role and he didn't feel she had enough of the misfit image for the role.

“We didn’t think of Sarah as Buffy because we thought she was too smart and too grounded and not enough of a misfit in a sense, because Buffy was this outsider. How could Sarah be an outsider? She’s so lovely."

She'd really impressed as Cordelia but the network convinced them based on her stardom from her previous work that she could be Buffy.
Charisma had an absolute winning attitude about being downgraded, she actually felt it turned out as it was meant to, that she didn't feel up to handling the fame of being the starring role. I'm guessing spending a few years in a more background role must have helped her work her way there since when she was transferred to Angel she was bumped back up to a lead role.

There is an unaired draft of Angel too? Oh If someone could please link me I need to see that! Or does Youtube have it? I actually largely prefer Angel to BTVS.

The Angel pilot was filmed.. I just don't know where any copies are.. it's supposed to be really dark.
There isn't an Angel pilot as such- there is a really dark, alternate script for one of the first episodes 'Lonely Hearts' I think.

It's very dark, it has scenes such as Angel licking/sucking the blood from a murder victim off of his hands, Det. Lockley is an undercover cop, who's also a coke addict, the demon is a lot nastier- it's 'moment of intimacy' with its potential victims is a lot more graphic (bassically a thinly vieled rape metaphor)

The show was still finding its feet tonally and I think the network was alarmed by the script and wanted a re-write.

I would have liked to see this actually. Maybe because I just really like dark shows, but I wouldn't have minded an even darker version of Angel. I can see why that didn't happen though and why the network wouldn't agree to that. For sure it's not for everyone.

This is just--DAMN! I honestly would have liked to see this version but it's plainly clear how inappropriate it was. Particularly Angel licking blood from his hands, that associates him closer with the Angelus persona when this is supposed to be about his redemption as Angel with a soul.
Lockley as a coke addict should have stayed though, possibly with Angel trying to help her overcome it. That would have been an intriguing angle.

@janas, Awesome, I'm gonna check that out later. This time I want to refresh my memory of the real pilot first.

I've seen the unaired pilot just as many times as I've seen the first two episodes. Which is only like 4 times. But I get some of the scenes confused. I thought the Xander/Buffy in the quad scene was in the first episode. Guess not. Considering this was just a pilot to pitch to the network and never intended to air, I think it's pretty good. They saw the potential in the show and made the necessary changes for the first two episodes. I don't like Reagan as Willow. There's a reason this girl is not a big(or even little) known actress. She looks like Ricky Lake from 'Hairspray' but without the personality. She was just to bland and passive. I was like that in high school too but that's boring and I don't want to watch it. I love AH as Willow, she IS and will always be Willow, to me. Even though I love her as Lily in HIMYM, I prefer her in BtVS because she gets to show more of her acting range. That's what I love the best about BtVS and AtS is that the actors get to play a lot of different aspects and sometimes different characters which make it refreshing to see as a viewer.

I agree with this. I can't imagine CC taking on all the hard work that comes with being Buffy. Not saying she doesn't work hard. But hearing how hard Sarah had to work as a lead plus all the stunt work, I don't think CC at that time was up for it.

Interesting analogy about Reagan resembling Ricki Lake, she quite does actually and I agree the energy wasn't there. Plus she brought more of a cliche image to the character. Hannigan owns the role for sure and in my opinion she owned the entire series of HIMYM. She was pretty much the most well written and developed character for it's entire duration.

Lily and Marshall are the reason I watched HIMYM. I don't care for Ted.
First of all sorry about double posting.
@Twisted Angelus I found this for Angel

I've just finished watching first the real 'City Of...' then this alternate opening and must say there is NOTHING about the alternate opening that didn't need the improvement it got. It was rushed, there was no proper build up to the entrance of Doyle and Cordelia, the theme music while catchy was a bit too upbeat and carefree and the recap of Angel's character took too long. The way it came out in the final was perfect.

I must also say though it's off topic kinda, how interesting it was watching the pilot again. I'd forgotten how much humor there was in it and how much Angel had evolved in terms of attitude and social skills throughout the course of the series from the way he was at the beginning.

thats not actually a pilot.. it's a pitch reel.. what they show to the studio to pitch the idea of the show.
Saw this recently. Actually didn't mind the original actress playing Willow. Think she got some of nervous energy of the part down quite well, but do agree that she didn't bring the sharp wit or senstivity that AH would bring. Of course it is hard to see anyone else in the role now, as Ayson just nailed it perfectly.

Would have liked them to have stuck with Tobolowsky really. He is just great when playing oddball characters, and not bad at being creepy too. In a way the actor who did play Fluttie problay came off more like a real princple would, but for some reason that made him duller too.
