Under-rated season?

I think that season one has some good episodes such as Nightmares, The Puppet Show, Prophecy Girl and Angel. I just watched the last episode and was reminded how poor Willow used to pine over Xander. But it's definitely an important season as it introduces us to all the characters.

I think s4 is easily most underrated. It might not have had the most solid Main arc, but everything else was great. Spike and Anya returning, i loved that the scoobs hung out at Giles house, loved the crossovers with Ange s1, loved the classics like Hush and Who are you and Restless. Come to think on it, its def one of my faves.

I disagree. So of the best episodes are in season 1. After all, it is short and sweet. The season kept my interest. It also started the Bangel love etc. Very different show for its time. Granted, the other seasons have better budgets. Buffy has always had good writing and direction. Plus every season has an episode or two...where it is like SAY WHATT...they went there??

I adore season 1, to this day. It is in truth quite cheesy - the high cut pants, corny pop music, the sheer 90's of it all - But it was so endearing. You couldn't help but root for the characters, want to see them grow. It was funny, if somewhat juvenile in places. I was sort of on the fence about Buffy until 1.07 - Angel. Not just because it was about Angel, but to me it took us into a whole deeper level of what would become the Buffyverse. What it means to be a vampire, what it means to be a Slayer... it all took on a whole other life in that episode to me. But Prophecy Girl really hit it home for me. It took Buffy to the next level because it broke all the rules. Season 1 is totally underrated.

But I still can't help but laugh at the make-up on Darla in Welcome to the Hellmouth. She's wonderful. That blue face they gave her is not.

I love season 1 and I wouldn't mind if the entire show was like that. It's consistent, the lore is simple and makes sense and oh my, the 90s. Bring them back.

I love season 1 and I agree that it is underrated. People often tend to remember it as the short corny season but it had some great episodes and had good writing and set up the lore in a clean cut sorta way.

I think season 4 is another underrated season. People often times can't look past the not-so-great Initiative/Adam plot to see the good stuff.

Season 5 is highly underrated. I can see what you guys are saying, but I loved season 1! It was kind of like a montage of short horror movies, lol. And yeah season 4 was complained about a lot, but it was nice too.

I think season 5 was definitely underrated.

I initially skipped S1 in my recent Buffy obsession. After completing the series, I went back to watch season 1 and loved it! There are a bunch of great episodes that I feel are overlooked. Plus, as much as I love dark!Buffy, S1 overall is pretty light and just plain fun.

I agree with the OP, I think Season 1 is the most under-rated season. I absolutely adore it! In fact, it's probably in the top 3 of my favorite seasons in the entire series. Shame it was half as long. :/

My feeling is that it's slightly underrated, but not as much as Season 4 is underrated. Still, I love Angel and Prophecy Girl, and obviously it was key in setting up the Bangel romance. It can be a bit camp, and hadn't really balanced the light-hearted irony with all the dark emotional drama, but it's more than serviceable in setting up the rest of the show. In fact, I'd argue that it's actually appropriate that it should be so carefree and fun in tone given the gradual shift towards darker stuff in subsequent seasons - it helps the show really feel like a complete product when you watch it all from beginning to end.

It's also easy to forget that even the bad episodes had their great moments, like Xander's "To read makes our speaking English good" in IRYJ.

Season 1 is definitely underrated, though I think this is because it lacked that rich long season arc that made the later season so memorable. While there is a slight arc for the season, its severely underdeveloped due to the abbreviated nature of season 1. Many have also mentioned Season 4 as being underrated, again this is more because of the arc then any of the episodes most of which were fantastic.

I think it is hugely underrated. With the eception of Teacher's Pet, I think all of the episodes are at least watchable and some (WTTM/TH, Angel and Prophecy Girl) are great.

If I put the seasons in order of preference, it is fifth on the list, but only because the four in front of it were so incredibly good, not because I think that season one is at all bad.

I love Season 1. It's probably my least favorite season, but only because of how short it is. Personally, I love how almost innocent the season seems compared to the later ones, plus there is alot of great character moments sprinkled throughout. "Prophecy Girl" alone is worth it.

Personally I think Season 4 is the most underrated season. Yes it has "Beer Bad" and "Where The Wild Things Are," but there is still so much great stuff this season. Episodes such as "Hush," "Restless," "Who Are You?," "Something Blue," "Primeval," "New Moon Rising," and "Wild At Heart" more than make up for the occasional misguided episode.

I love Beer Bad. :p
I actually really like this season was it cheesy? yes, was it funny? yes did it have bad effects? some. But I like the storylines they were trying to releate everyday life, I have been rewatching it with some friends and discussing a lot about it, if it weren't for this season Buffy wouldn't be back. I wish they did have more episodes, I do love this season and when I first watched it I wanted more and more! It had great episodes like 'Nightmares', 'Angel' and 'Prophecy Girl'. I don't know why this show has a lot of hate (I have heard this from many people) cause I enjoy it the only thing I hate about the season is how easily they forgot Jesse 🙁 cause if my close friend died and turned to the undead and had to be killed again it would kill me 🙁, also what I like about the season is it didn't start with oh you Buffy! Your slayer by the way. Buffy was already the slayer she had done it before cause a lot of shows like 'The Secert Circle', 'Charmed' etc all start with oh your a witch, I'm new to this etc etc. That's what I liked about it that she was already the slayer I would of liked it if maybe Willow found out in the 3rd episode that she's the slayer or something they would of been funny 🙂 but overall I actually like this season a lot.

I so agree. Season 1 is the most underrated.

I think season 6 is the second most underrated because of all the hate it seems to get.

Season ! has always been a great season and badly rated many. What people forget, it was this season where everything starts, we meet the gang and learn what a Slayer does.

I'm also a Trekkie and a lot of people slag off The Original Series but they forget that if it weren't for TOS there would've been no Trek and the same goes for Buffy.

I think its underrated, mainly because the show wasnt well established and Joss took some huge risks with some of his episodes. He highlights very strong issues and addresses them to the audience. In The Witch this episode looks at the pressure many parents put on their children and the stress this can cause. In The Pack we watch students being bullied and victimised. There's also I, Robot -- You, Jane, which highlights the Internet problems and brings to light 'Do you really know who your talking to over the net'. It drills home the message to be careful. And the episode that most shocked me was Nightmares. This episode is centred on child abuse. The kid is in the hospital because his coach beat him to the point of death.

So I do think its an underrated season 🙂
