Which entertainment or fandom hooked you, when you didn't expect it to?

Apparently, I am a Jojo Siwa fan now after seeing her on celebrity big brother. Never saw that coming. But I have always enjoyed watching the mileys and madonnas of the world go through all of their different eccentric music phases, without necessarily liking the actual music. So I shouldn't be surprised by it. The new bulletproof song is just perfect for the Jojo brand. What an amazing work ethic.

I hope Jojo gets bigger than Katy Perry, Jojo is a way better dancer.

I even got Amazon prime so I could watch the UK Last one Laughing.

So, unexpected fan of the likes of Bob Mortimer, David Mitchell, and Richard Ayoade etc, can’t get enough!

I recommend QI, very funny and informative quiz. Also Taskmaster.
I mean this is an obvious answer, but BTVS. Coming in somewhere in the middle of season 5 and not knowing what the heck was going on, I didn't know what to expect. And here I am, some 24 years later...

If I think of anything else that really hooked me, I'll add to the above!
 
*BtVS (i joined after getting into Angel) and it is definitely a gateway drug!

*NASCAR. I *HATE* other motorsports and most broadcast sports. But the personalities and drama suck me in and i have been watching almost as long as I have been watching Buffy.

*Most fantasy TV and books - although i became a Marvel comic fan as a very young adult (also a surprise come to think of it - i thought the teen boys i knew were dumb for loving comics - then one summer, age 19, i stayed with a family friend in the middle of nowhere and read 20 years of comics, initially out of boredom) (I had no idea how valuable x-men 1 and other firsts were and my friend did not enlighten me. They were in less than pristine shape since he had them since his childhood but they were treasured.)

Most of my youth, i was very hugely (almost militantly so) into "REALISM" - cop shows and medical shows mostly. Still like some of those but i am mostly a fantasy and soft sci fi fan,

Somehow i found myself into Star Trek, Buffy and Stargate and then LOTR - and the rest is history.

Oddly, I still don't care for most vampire shows, movies or books (Moonlight and Tru Blood are exceptions though i have a love hate relationship with Tru Blood) i abhor sparklepires. Did not make it thru half of movie one.
 
I didn't expect to like Buffy as much as I did. It was just something to watch during the pandemic originally.

I knew Squid Game was hugely popular, but I still didn't expect to love it as much as I did, and despite all the gore!

I watched the 1925 Phantom of the Opera originally to see how it compared to the modern musical. I became a huge fan of Lon Chaney (original Phantom) and have now seen almost all of his movies that are still extant. It also got me very interested in silent films in general.

I would like to see a musical version of the original Nosferatu.
 
I feel like I experience this phenomena quite a bit. I check something out expecting to feel nothing, and then suddenly I'm a fan. I remember seeing the ads for Bates Motel, thinking the show to be a bit too weird, then actually enjoying myself by the time I gave it a watch. Daria, Stranger Things, Steven Universe, and The X-Files are a few more I never expected to love so much. As for movies, Beetlejuice has grown on me quite a bit recently. This also applies to my music tastes - occasionally I'll hear something Taylor Swift or Chappell Roan and end up downloading a few earworms.

ALSO, my Elvira phase has become it's own little thing now so there's that.

I remember thinking, what could be interesting about people watching tv? But the Brits are hilarious and their dry sense of humour just cracks me up. I got completely addicted to the series and the Celebrity version too!
 
Nancy Drew (2019) was unexpectedly really good. When The CW released the premise, I didn't think I would like it. I also wasn't a BIG fan of the first episode, but the group reminded me so much of the Scoobies, I really enjoyed it.

I also got into Grey's Anatomy a couple of years late (around season 6). As a rule, I usually stay away from overly popular shows and movies, because usually they are trash. But my first boyfriend in college liked it, so I bought the third season on sale at a Used Media store, and ended up loving the show. I honestly think seasons 6-8 are the golden years. Seasons 9-11 were also good. But it's steadily declined since. Alas, I still keep up to date, and do periodic binges, usually after the fall and spring finales.

Recently, I've gotten way too into The Real Housewives franchise. I was looking to fill my Vanderpump void last year, and I started watching Salt Lake City season 4. Did not disappoint. Then I binged seasons 1-3. Then, I moved onto Potomac Season 8. Then Miami 4-6. Then Orange County's most recent season. Then current seasons of Beverly Hills/Salt Lake City/Potomac this past fall. I am now watching the current season of Atlanta while going back to the archives of Potomac, starting with season 3. I just started season 6. To be honest, I was averse because why do I care about some rich women with superficial issues. But watching each of these series, there's different positive aspects about them.
