Originally, I pictured aussies to be majorly into surfing/partying, seen a zillion kangaroos in their life, always be cheery and happy, usually tanned, very laidback and fun-loving, pretty much the cool party animals lol (seen "our lips are sealed" waaaay too many times, sorry😉)* Oh! and to have a really cool accent 😀

But I actually know a few people from there, including one of my best friends, and although he fits that character pretty well, I must admit some things are off (who knew you didn't all throw boomerangs on the beach in your spare time?), but he has the lingo down pat for sure (oroo!).

Edit: Oh! And I forgot, you all have long, long, hair (sandy blonde most commonly), wear cargo shorts, and sandals (and I mean that as in "I used to think", not actually think so please no hurt katie! 😉)

ok... one I haven't seen a 'zillion' kangaroos but before I moved they always used to come into my backyard... those kangaroo's are alot nicer than those damn drop bears, they're vicious! Two I don't know anyone who throws boomerangs in their spare time on the beach.. we use them to kill animals for food and clothing (jk jk) 😀 And you def go the party/fun lovin bit right.. 🙂

That's awesome! (aww kangaroos!) ^_^
And wow miffed... do they really ask you that? *shudders* what about atheists ppl? how are they considered in there you think?
You wouldn't believe how many times I get asked that, it's crazy. Happens more in the town I live in now, it's a smaller town, one of those kind where everyone knows everyone else. One lady I work with has lived here all her life and knows practically EVERYONE. Whenever you mention a person's name, and that person just happens to go to her church, that's always the first thing out of her mouth..."he/she goes to my church..." Why I'm supposed to care, I have no idea! I sometimes wonder if that makes that person better than everyone else? I mean, she's the nicest woman in the world, but it does get on my nerves sometimes......

Anyway, as for the Puerto Rican thing....when I was stationed in El Paso, I worked with a lot of Mexicans (or I guess they'd be Texicans (?), they were from Texas, of Mexican descent) and they would always kind of tease me, asking me where I'm hiding my knife, and tellling me that ALL Puerto Ricans carry knives, it's a known fact. They didn't mean it badly tho, it was just big, tough soldier talk, strutting around with a pint of soda, you know how that is. I always thought it was funny that they were surprised I'm an only child, tho! LOL!

so what do you guys think about Australians then?
Alright... I think that from experience because of an Aussie who was at my camp last summer... she was the coolest girl ever hehe... but do you guys all shout "Aussie Aussie Aussie... oy oy oy" all the time? Cause she did... haha... that was so cool!

And yeah... she actually said ppl were not riding kangaroo... which was the stereotype some american ppl had of Aussie.. hehe
Another thing about aussie.... they all seem to e very "cool" to me... ehe... with the goodday mate... that's grouse.. and i dont remember what other words i've be taught.. hehe

Once, I was in Paris, and all the people were all rude, except for that muslim guy who had milk and some yummy dried fruit and a little carpet that he later took out to pray on.

My home state, Wisconsin, has the reputation for being filled with fat, beer-swilling, cheese-eating, Packer-loving yahoos. That's...somewhat true. But there are skinny people too, lol. And my hometown, Madison, has a rep for being one of the most liberal cities in America. Largely true as well. And my alma mater, the UW, has a rep as a killer party school"”which I didn't fully realize til I left the state:

Playboy ranks UW-Madison as No. 1 party school

MADISON, Wis. - Where's the best place for a college kid to party? Right here in the heartland, Playboy magazine says.

The magazine, breaking a four-year hiatus by issuing a list of top party schools, has named University of Wisconsin-Madison No. 1 in its study of "books, babes and beer."

The issue hitting newsstands Friday cites two annual parties that UW-Madison students love: a Halloween Party that attracts up to 100,000 people and a rowdy spring block party in the heart of campus.

I, being one (who's never left the country to know better), am really curious to see what y'all think of us in general.

Hey! Canuckleheads! What's not to like? ;) I R Canucklehead!
Canadians... hmm well I could say about ppl from Quebec.. with their weird accent.. hehe... but I heard you guys don't think they really are Canadians?

Actually... it's gonna be hard to tell about stereotypes on Canadians... cause personally I only hear good stuff about it... like how they are cool... how many American wanna go to Canada.. and many Europeans too... it's like the country of freedom and balance.. contrasting with its neighbors... can't really think of any stereotype.... :silly:

Can't think of a stereotype, eh? lol (sorry... I just had to)

I know quite a few Canadians so I can't come up with a solid stereotype to stick to really. All I know is that they are a bit crazy when it comes to Hockey... they like to go get themselves beat up with sticks for fun! lol Isn't that right, dwarfy?

OK... so what do you guys think of the Scots?

K
killerdwarf
Yup...I do it all the time! ( the stick thing...)...ouch...
I know this was said awhile but i wnna say somethign abotu it anyway...so you'll all have to put up with me for a sec...about americans being conservative...i think its pretty 50-50 but one thing that is funny that other countries think we are too conservative and in the US peopel seem to look down on people who are to liberal like its a bad thing...but other countries see it the other way around...i found that interesting...

And Americans ARE to fat...not all of course...but wayyyy top many Americans are overweight...like very overweight...i would neverrr let myself get like that...we need to make fast food less readily available and people need to start getting off their asses and DOING SOMETHING....I mean when people have thyroid problems or other problems weight is a struggle for them no matter what they do...but when half your population is overweight because of their LIFESTYLE CHOICES they should reevaluate the way they live...if you have a sedentary job...take up running...or eat healthier...make at least one change for the better...

Ok...im done...

Oh...theres many stereotypes about Canadians in the U.S....one thing ill say id everyone thinks al Canada has to offer is beavers and maple syrup...and hockey players...

There's even a website somewhere called like InvadeCanada.com or something and it talks all about killing all their beavers and contaminating their maple syrup so their economy collapses...(btw this site is a joke...at least i hope these peopek aren't serious) however i think even those canadians on the board would get a kick outta it...it also inspired a few peopel from canada to start an invade the US website...i don't know what it's called though...

Here's a compilation, courtesy of Wiki:

There are a variety of common national stereotypes about the inhabitants of various nations, held by inhabitants of other nations. Such stereotypes are usually prejudicial and often ill-informed, and often overlap with ethnic or racial stereotypes. However, some stereotypes may be positive (e.g. Australians are good at sports), although this does not make them acceptable.

Examples of common national sterotypes include:

* Asians are all experts in martial arts and good at math. All Asians cannot drive.
* Australians wear weatherbeaten hats with dangling corks, and are good at sports.
* South-east Asians Southeast Asians which include Thai, Burmese, Laotians, Cambodians are generally polite, humble and hospitable.
* English tolerate eccentric people, drink tea, and are football enthusiasts. They also have bad teeth, talk posh and think they are the better of you.
* French people never bathe, smoke heavily, always wear a beret, eat frogs' legs, are rude, and are rather weak and cowardly.
* Germans and Austrians are Nazis who consume huge amounts of beer, sausages, cabbage and behave like machines. They have no sense of humor.
* Japanese are workaholics and are of short stature and penis size; Japanese tourists spend their entire trip taking pictures of things. They copy and try to fit the western cultures. Guys pluck their eye brows and dye their hair in red. Japanese women like westerners.
* Spaniards are people who always have bull races.
* Swedish have all blonde hair and Swedish girls are good looking.
* Russians drink vodka and are Communists.
* Americans are fat, ignorant, war-mongering and/or boorish, don't know about other countries and talk with stupid accents.
* Irish are drunk and/or fiery-tempered redheads and have a large amount of children.
* Chinese Do not respect laws. Talk loud regardless where they are.
* Jews are careful and obsessed with money, usually do commerce or finance related jobs and many of them are obsessed with religion.
* Indians smell like curry and either own restaurants or convenience stores, drive taxicabs or are employed in the IT sector or work in the Gas stations. Generally they are thrifty (e.g. bargaining at the stores, etc.), and like to show off/take credits. Are also good talkers.
* Italian men are chauvinists, mobsters, hot-blooded and/or over-emotional, and live an indulgent lifestyle. Often they are fashionable and elegant looking and drive sport cars.
* Brazilian women are sexy and Brazilian men are great soccer players.
* Africans are hard workers.
* Mexicans are dirty, drink too much tequila, work for little money, are illegal immigrants, and take naps. Sex maniac also.
* Native Americans are impoverished, drunks, or noble savages. Moreover, they are unattractive.
* Canadians are overly polite and say "Eh" after every sentence, and pronounce "about" as "aboot". They wear winter clothing year-round.
* Middle Easterners commit or support terrorist acts. Twisted and sex maniac also.
* Puerto Ricans tend to be rowdy, the majority of them live on Welfare and apply for Public Housing, and make too much noise.
* Every resident of New Jersey has a "New York Accent" and pronounces Jersey as 'Joisy'.

Such national stereotypes, being instantly recognised, play an important role in advertising and comedy. They also play a more serious role in provoking and maintaining conflict and war between nations. An example of this is actor David Chappelle. He criticizes Puerto Ricans for being lazy, Asian women to be extremely flat, black women to be gold diggers, Mexicans for not bathing, and Indian or south asian people to smell like curry or have innacurate accents.

Most negative/prejudicial national stereotypes also have positive ones that exist alongside them. Examples of such positive stereotypes would be that: Israelis are highly educated computer-experts; Icelanders are excellent business people; the British are very creative; the Japanese are very polite; and Asians are highly intelligent.

I'm confused.. Are these not true??

* Swedish have all blonde hair and Swedish girls are good looking.
* Russians drink vodka and are Communists.
* Americans are fat, ignorant, war-mongering and/or boorish, don't know about other countries and talk with stupid accents.
* Jews are careful and obsessed with money.
* English tolerate eccentric people, drink tea, and are football enthusiasts. They also have bad teeth, talk posh and think they are the better of you.
* Mexicans are dirty, drink too much tequila, work for little money, are illegal immigrants, and take naps. :bandit:

As a Canadian I would like to clear up some of these silly stereotypes...
We say about not aboot. Seriously how could we buy a boot if we say aboot?
Yes we love hockey, as Europeans love soccer/football, but because we like hockey everyone thinks we have only two seasons in Canada 8 months of hockey and 4 months of bad ice conditions.
We do drink a lot of beer and the problem with that is exactly what? Eh in Canada is as common as D'oh in the US.
When a Canadian cuts themselves it is pure blood not a mixture of blood and maple syrup.
Yes we are a relaxed gentle people why else would we allow the 3 levels of government take about 50% of our annual income in taxes. Also further proof we are relaxed people we have a political party in Canada from Quebec (the ones with funny accents because they are of French descent) who's only purpose is to have Quebec seperate from Canada. And we pay them a salary and give them a pension when they retire from politics.
And it is true without Canada there wouldn't be nearly the comic genius' as there is today. Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, Oliver Platt, Michael J Fox, Eric McCormack, Mathew Perry, John Candy, Eugen Levey, William Shatner, Dave Foley, Brendon Fraser, Keeanu Reeves (before he went all Matrix), Caroline Rhea.
Oh and the most improtant thing... we love being made fun of by the rest of the world because we have people from every other country living here already.

These guys are funny? Did I miss the humourous punchline?

Shatner's great on Boston Legal. Dave Foley's good. Eugene Levy"”good at slapstick, which is almost impossible.

Martin Short is just as good at slapstick. But the best parody of Canadiana goes to the MacKenzie brothers! Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas.
SCTV what a comedy troupe. And to think Dan Akroyd is a Second City alumn.
