[What happened to good TV?]

Being 16 and in sixth form theres alot of talk of going to university. I have every intention of going, and have done for a long time. Currently I'm deciding on my top 6 choices for universitys to apply to. I've found many interesting courses and its a bitch deciding which ones for me! Give me time....I'll decide. All the courses involve writing of some sort. Scriptwriting, Creative writing, Media writing, Media writing and practice, to name a few.

I was just wondering what courses people studied/are studying at university, what university you went to/are at, and basically how you came to the decision of what course/university was for you.

i live in the UK, but i didn't go to university, i went to a tech college. and i'm still there. the reason i haven't moved on to uni, is because i can't decide what it is i really want to do. i've studied art, through to BTEC level, A-level photography and critical studies and interior design, and i'm going back in September to study web deisgn, or graphic design. i change my mind so often, and i just go with the flow.
but i'm only 21, i've got plenty of time to settle down or whatever. so my advice to you would be to study as many subjects as you can, and work the rest out later.

I am going to uni in September, after an accidental gap year (long story).

I wanted to do scriptwriting at first, but decided to widen it and have film & television (as nowhere seems to do just television) which has scriptwriting modules. Basically I began by looking at places like Bournemouth, which are touted as being good media unis (and I went to the open days, it seemed good) but then decided to stay a bit more local. So I applied for Derby and Warwick as they are nearish me and chose Derby as my insurance (despite Warwick being a more acclaimed Uni, the course didn't suit me).

However during my gap year I have decided I don't even want to move that far away. I have a bunch of great friends, a good job and all that. So I looked and my localist Uni does a very similar course, so I am going to be doing that. Im moving out (well maybe, was moving in with a friend but hes got a new girl who is uberannoying but different story) but going to that uni.

Looking over the modules I will probably do stuff like gender represntation, postmodernism, scriptwriting and probably just one module of practical (not what I want to move into, but good to have it "under my belt".)

I've been having the dilemma of deciding whether to do scriptwriting, which may be too specific, or doing a wider spread course such as film and television. A lot of media-related courses have a scriptwriting module so similarly I'm torn between the two.

I've been looking at Bournemouth, I've heard its reputation as the place to be for media. I was looking at the scriptwriting for film and television course and it looked great.

Also I looked around Warwick with my school. I felt out of place. The university gave us a map and told us to look around for a bit, as long as we're gone within the hour....so I kinda didn't like it. Plus the entry requirements are a little high for what i think i'm going to get!

If you don't mind me asking, what was your reason for deciding to just do a film and television course over the scriptwriting. Was it just so you haven't limited yourself to a career in scriptwriting? I'm interested as I'm basically confused whether to do a specific course, or a more generic course.

Well, I don't live in the UK, but I am currently attending college. I'm majoring in Political Science Pre-law and Psychology. I also am hoping to get my sign language certification.

I spent last year in the UK and decided to study film and TV at East Anglia. Seemed like a great course for me, really did. Mhm. But 'cause of some stuff that happened in the end of spring, and well the money situation.. I decided not to. So now I'm staying in Sweden, mhm..

Well I decided not to go to a university for my first year of college, because I got a job and I'd have to quit it if I did, and I like my job. Plus I only want to take two classes in my first semester. So I'm going to a community college for my first year but I'm transferring to a university next year. 😀

Just to note people not in the UK please feel free to talk about the equivilent of university.

Also eponinethen, I was looking at East Anglia through recommendation from my english teacher. She said it would be good for creative writing, and i saw the film and Tv courses whilst checking out the prospectus. It looked pretty interesting.

Well I finished school, and will probably be taking a year out, I was also trying to get into a portfolio course, but I don't know yet, cuz I have the interview at the end of August. But then I wanna go do Graphic Design, I'm just not sure where yet, like the best place for it is a 4 year course, but the first year is a mix year where you do all the curses like interior Design, Fine Art and Industrial Design, then for the last 3 years you do the course you want. While other places aren't as good but do the course for 4 years, and I'd rather not do that mix year just cuz I already know what I want to do 🙁

I hate this growing up and deciding what to do with you life!

To be honest, I can't remember. I think maybe parents, grandparents and the lark suggested it. In retrospect I'm glad I chose a more broad course anyway, as I liked studying things like gender, postmodernism and all that, and enjoyed writing and studying for my A-level coursework essay (all about Buffy 😀). Thats the problem with being made to chose these things years in advance.

I never went to university or college. I joined the military straight out of high school but one thing that I noticed when dealing with university educated people. The better you can write the farther you will go in whatever field you decide to take.
So I suggest you take the English courses, screenwriting, media etc. It seems having good writing skills is developed from deductive reasoning which comes from exposure to literature.
Just a small piece of advice from an ol' fart.

well at the moment i am in the last year of schooling before going to UNI.. and I study film and tv at the school im at (high school).. and i really enjoy it. most of the UNI's offer some form of film and tv, media studies, diploma of screen, creative writing courses, i do it all at school but i want to do more.. so i think it would be great for me to study that.. i mean its what im passionate about and i do well 🙂 So i am on the same boat as you... looking for UNI's to go to and what courses to study.. there are way too many..
