Didnt want to taint the BBtv thread but wanted to pass these along in the event someone wanted something alittle different. Three gems (as far as I am concerned)
First, from E. Elias Merhige, Begotten. While not a typical movie in the sense in which you are accustomed, though it does tell a myth story which has been told since man. It is an artful movie in the highest sense (even if it has some cringe worthy moments, I almost could not make it thru the first five minutes) There is no dialogue, no speaking (though the occasional grunts and chants) and it is STARK. Not black and white, but black AND white are the only colors. If you wanted to see how far art in the modern movie-making can be taken, watch this movie.
Second, is Carl Theodor Dreyer's Vampyr. This tells a more straight forward tale than does Begotten, but again, it leans heavily towards art. It focuses on the vampire mythos (hence the name) it is full of atmosphere and amazing camera tricks - considering the time in which it was made. It shows how much a director can do without CGI. It is a silent film so be ready to read if you decide to view it, but it is breathtaking.. some images are as beautiful as Begotten is disturbing.
The third film, is another from E. Elias Merhige; this being the studio motion picture- Shadow of the Vampire. A liberal telling of the "events" which transpired while filming the movie Nosferatu (with the idea that Nosferatu was indeed real). I am sure many have seen the Nosferatu vampire before if not knowing. In fact, in the Angel episode Why We Fight, one of the vampires on the sub was meant to be Nosferatu. Anywhooo.. Shadow of the Vampire is wonderful for the simple fact of seeing the talented Mr. Willem Dafoe play Nosferatu. He owns the role. Dafoe literally, is a vampire, at least in this movie (cant speak for his personal habits) It is a chance to see a brilliant actor play a vampire. And much, peace love and respect to Gary Oldman (i love ya kid) but Dafoe is captivating.
So.. a few unknowns (though shadow may be more known) for you to sink your teeth in if you so desire.
What are the unknowns in your collection?
